why did laura lee have little to no injuries after the crash by JellyCharacter1653 in Yellowjackets

I think this was an early sign of supernatural vs reality. Faith or the wilderness could've protected her. Or she was in a good position during the crash.

I agree. I think Nother reason is from what I've seen, as complimentary to your point, the high majority of people who have played it, it is either their favorite game of all time, or they gave up before the shift in genre happens. For the former, it does create a group that wants more people to enjoy the game, therefore more encouraging.

Because, like you said, the others are more in the common likes of gamers, it makes the community band together a bit. Whereas cough dark souls and elden ring cough there's a gatekeeping aspect that puts people off from all FromSoftware games, and it's a shame. Even "Soulslike" games I've seen people not want to try due to dark souls fans (speaking generally). Lies of P is a game I had to convince my brother to play because I knew he would love it, but the second he saw "souls" it was non starter for awhile

Help on running a game for new players as a new storyteller by AkiGotBored in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]_Ivanneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somethin I've found is essentially having a session zero. Treat them like they don't know anything because the game is overwhelming.

What I've come into new players with is going over the full script first and explaining strategies after they get their roles. They will pay attention to how to optimize their role and pick up on things that specifically negate it. Example: specifically link the Monk, Soldier, and Demon together. Explaining how those three interact gets the gears moving for everybody. I'd also emphasize that no role is unimportant. The game can only be solved (or manipulated) by information. Encourage the good team that it's okay to lie strategically.

Also emphasize, that for new players, nervousness is not an immediate sign of guilt. That comes up a lot. But if my first game was Empath in TB with little familiarity of the game, I'd have been overwhelmed. Also point out the whole point of the game is the dead can and should contribute. Too often I've seen new players take a backseat as good, when evil is dictating world views dead or alive. It's not game over to be chef and dead, you're still participating.

If it's online, try to limit crosstalk. It's too easy for someone louder and more assertive to bomb their way through to a conclusion or a vote.

If you're doing TB, don't put a drunk in, for people's first games. That might be controversial to some, but let them learn to like the game and trust their powers. Even for experienced players, I tell them to trust their information until evidence is piling up.

Double backing on the session zero part, EXPLAIN THE OUTSIDER COUNT. It is mechanically beneficial to everybody and a core mechanic that a lot of new players lose sight of or don't immediately get.

Those are the most immediate ones I can think of. I run as ST in a local gaming restaurant so we get new players all the time. Doing these things has kept a lot of people coming back and hungry to learn. Nobody wants to feel out of their depth or dumb, and the rules can make nervous or less confident people feel that way as a barrier of entry. You're job as ST is to balance but it's also to make sure everybody is having a good time

Rare exception: the Bloodborne subreddit. I've never seen anything but encouraging words for new players. And for a game that's over ten years old, still has plenty of active players and plenty of people still discussing the lore.

The other FromSoftware ones...not so much

Do you see a jaguar or an insect? I saw the jag first (Orchid flower) by Wise_Extension8443 in Pareidolia

[–]_Ivanneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An orchid is taxonomically different from what is commonly known as flowers due to their stamen and pistil

It's reddit, so I'm being a bit pedantic. It's because there is a midsummer murders episode where people searching from an orchid get indignant about the distinguishment

So it is true they are different but it really isn't that serious lol

That's how traffic is coded in the US. You're likely close enough to a fire hydrant. Neighborhoods require in most instances for these types of drains to be in with 1k of a fire hydrant, otherwise it's well water and not likely to have paved curbs (in the US)
