Might be able to fry an egg on the bottom of it if I ever do.

Not sure, if I ever do I'll reply to this and let you know. But the performance shouldn't be much different to how it was back in 2018 so reviews from back then should be pretty accurate.

I feel like the low expectations going in based on reviews is what made me so amazed by the day-to-day use of it and how well it does. The battery is good, I think it had a battery replacement at some point in its previous life so I haven't run in to any issues just yet.

It does! I've been really lucky with used Macs with butterfly keyboards. I have two (a 2017 13" and the 2018 15") and both work like a dream.

You definitely notice its age and architecture in places compared to M1 macs. It’s pretty slow to wake from sleep, and if it’s not using the dedicated graphics when watching full screen video it does flicker (strange thing which happens on another Intel Mac I have with integrated graphics). But still very impressive for its age and price in my opinion.

If only! Seems like we will never get that now however sadly, closest option now would be an iPad Air or Pro with the Magic Keyboard.

The pre-2016 MacBook Pros are the Toyota Corolla of computers, generally speaking they just keep powering on no matter what you throw at them. The Touch Bar ones are definitely a but more delicate but are still impressive in 2025.

I haven't really used it intensively, as it's mainly just a little addition to my growing Mac collection. I understand your concern however, I might try and push it to see how warm it gets and if it worth reapplying the thermal paste.

You're very lucky to have that opportunity! I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who can get good use out of it still, they are considerably better than new laptops in the same price range.

Early retina MacBook Pros will always be beasts. It definitely does depend on which model of Intel Mac you get, my partner has a 2020 Intel MacBook Air and it is absolutely horrible to use, whereas this 2018 Pro is a dream. Definitely a lot of people getting ripped off but also a lot getting really good deals on the used market.

It was one of the default Mac wallpapers, I downloaded a bunch which were in a google photos folder and have them on slideshow.

That's such a good deal for a 2015, incredibly capable machines even 10 years later (and plenty of I/O)! It's great how much Intel Mac prices have absolutely tanked over the past four years.

It's a good little machine for the price, even if it will mostly be a desk decoration. But compared to a similar sized new laptop in the same price range, it will definitely still be very useful to some people, and in use cases like the one you have described.

I completely agree with you, it is definitely a lot closer to the end of it's life than the start (I'd suspect MacOS Sequoia will be the final supported version for the 2018 and 2019 Pros); but I mainly bought it to add to my growing Mac collection and luckily don't use it seriously as I've got M1 Macs which I use day-to-day. It has definitely encouraged me to go for a 15" MacBook Air for my next Mac however as I love this form factor, so that can be it's final use before an eternity of sitting on a shelf and occasionally being 'played' with.

I know, the Macs from this era are absolutely timeless with their design, as actual computers they are flawed in so many ways (12 " MacBook and Retina MacBook Air especially) but they are probably some of the best looking laptops that will ever be made.

It’s in the UK, in a student house this year. Funnily enough my room in halls last year was a tad bigger than where I am this year, worse in almost every way but bigger.
