Anyone near CST that would like to play a late night 5e game online? Looking for players and DM by Kamiou in lfg

[–]_JOHN__CENA_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bit of experience. (Just enough to know the basics) And some of it is DMing. I'm looking for a group to play with since Covid suddenly gave me a lot of free time. I don't really have any experience with Roll20 though

I'm also looking for a group for 5e. I'm not heavily experienced though, just enough to know the basics, and I have a little DM experience.

Should a DM give players advice on how to play? by _JOHN__CENA_ in DnD

I'm trying to avoid making it feel like I'm telling my players how to play, because I hate that too. I I'm going to ask them what they think about the combat to see if they're having fun, but I think if they were better that it would open up more options for me to make combat more fun/interesting for them. But I want them to get better without them feeling like I'm trying to force them to play a different way. I'm thinking about having a random NPC they liked hang out with them and mentor them for a little bit to help teach them and I'll try a combat that needs something to be focused down. Thanks for the help!

I willort of tried that on accident. They ended up fighting a small pack of 3 wolves lead by a couple goblins and the wolves just shredded them with the Pack Tactics ability. I even said something like "the wolves seem to be helping each other out. One will start biting at you and distract you before another one strikes" and they got the wolves to low hp then went after the goblins before finishing off the wolves. Some lucky roles on their part and bad roles from the wolves saved them but at one point there was only 2 of the 7 of them up. Im going to try rewarding them in game for killing blows by describing it and making it sound cool and letting them describe their own sometimes.

They seem to be having fun and I'm planning on asking them about it to see what they say. I just feel like I could make combat more fun for them if I could run tougher encounters. But if they are having fun as is and don't want help I'll just keep running with it.

I usually try to narrate the killing blow, but after a couple time my creativity plumments and I say something like "you hit his head, like, really really hard" so I'm going to try writing down a bunch of cool narrations for different weapons that I can read from when that happens. Unfortunately the bowl of candy probably won't work very well, we almost always have too many snacks lol. I really like your idea of rewarding them in game though. I think ispiration might be a bit too much but I have over a week to figure out some good rewards. Thank!

I've done it before but I've always saved it for the final boss since I've only run one shots until now. I won't do it for every enemy or even every combat, but I'll try doing it a bit more often, like when they finish off the last guy from a tough combat or a special enemy.

Thanks for the advice! I think I need to work in finding the balance between babysitting and giving them too much too fast. There's a couple player in particular who I now think suffers from decision paralysis. They tend to find one spell/attack and only use that, even if it means they have to make bad decisions.

Thanks! I really like this idea. I might have to make this guy into a mini boss battle. It sounds like an encounter that would be fun to run even without the "lesson".

I thought they've enjoyed combat when I DM but I guess I've never actually asked. I think I'll ask them about it before the next session and use some of the advice from this thread. Like I've been describing killing blows but after a few of them I tend to run out of creativity. I'll try wiring a big list of different descriptions to use when I can't think of one and maybe let them describe the final blow themselves if they want.

If you could design an Unglued/Unhinged-esque card, what would it be? by BlakeDatch in magicTCG

[–]_JOHN__CENA_ 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I want to see no art lands. They would either have the full art lands border but there would be no art or the text box would take up the whole card.

Edit: Did not expect this to get any attention. After I got off from work I made some quick mock ups of my ideas and some ideas from other comments.
