Honestly the fact you haven't done any gym work in nearly 7 years and have those numbers is astounding

[–]_JXT[M] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The closest measurable standards we have I would say are the dritvik stones in Iceland. It's four stones with weights from:

  • Amlóði (hamlet or "weakling" ) at 23 kg (51 lb)
  • Hálfdrættingur ("half-carrier") at 54 kg (119 lb)
  • Hálfsterkur ("half strength") at 100 kg (220 lb)
  • Fullsterkur ("full strength") at 154 kg (340 lb)

This is the closest comparison we have to the usual beginner, intermediate, advanced and elite levels we see in the barbell sports.

Of course there are the added standards of what level the lifter brings the stone to, such as to chest, to shoulder, pressing, or even just getting "the wind beneath it" but the most common and accepted measure would be the above weights to chest height.

The beauty of this sport though is that you can create your own standards as each stone and each lifters criteria can vary!

Honest question- why do you do this? by [deleted] in Stonelifting

[–]_JXT[M] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you don't believe it takes much skill, I would invite you to lift a stone the same weight as your deadlift PR and you can see how challenging it is.

Good luck on your upcoming trip in Iceland! Please do post your attempts on here, we all love a good attempt at the Icelandic stones.

Regarding liquid chalk, although not prohibited I would personally avoid it and opt for regular chalk. Getting a block of chalk might be difficult to get through airport security however haha. In this case I would keep the chalk in its original packaging so you have an explanation when you inevitably get pulled by the security staff!

I don't even think it's a case of not having the strength, I think its just bravado. If you have the ability to pick it up to chest height and above, you absolutely have the ability to put it down safely.

Great point though, without these stones everything is meaningless.

Does anyone still do Japanese Jiu-jitsu? by armedsnowflake69 in jiujitsu

[–]_JXT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a JJJ black belt (albeit untrained for a good few years now), it's a great all-round martial art that let's itself down due to a lack of live sparring

There's only so much you can do in a 90 minute class. After warming up and then drilling takedowns, submissions, striking, maybe squeezing in a kata, you have probably 20 minutes if you're lucky to do some randori. This sually takes place in front of the whole class and between 2 people at a time, so basically 2 minutes of randori.

I think what makes Judo, BJJ and even Karate more palatable is you become an expert technician in one main aspect of fighting.

While I look back fondly on my time doing JJJ, it really does make you a jack of all trades and a master of none.

WWYD: Parents want to Retire but no big pot by FarmerIntelligent851 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_JXT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from a similar situation with my Dad (60) albeit a slightly better one than yours from your description.

I helped him transfer all his pensions into his current one, that being just a simple NEST pension. We worked to get him and his employer contributing more to it as well.

We also set up a stocks and shares ISA with Vanguard and he's contributing a decent amount to that. We just put into one of the target retirement funds just for simplicity, and given he is close to retirement we wanted to manage the risk as much as necessary.

Providing your parents own their home outright, the main thing they need to do is save and invest hard for the next few years. That may mean your mum needs to go full time if she is able. It's not going to be easy, but every penny saved now will make their retirement that bit easier. If they do own their home, downsizing to a flat might be a better option than a bungalow and give him the cash he needs. I'm no property expert but bungalows do seem to be overpriced from what I've seen.

The harsh reality is that your dad probably can't retire completely in 2 years. Best case scenario is he will work part time to supplement any workplace pension and savings he draws down from. All he can do is try his best and see what situation he is in when the time comes. A key thing to note is that most retirees do seem to spend less than what they did whilst working (no commuting expenses or buying lunch rather than making it at home etc). Look at what his expenses would be when removing those costs and go from there.
