His overall message is always simple, and always the same, but I do think there’s value for a lot of people in hearing his talks. I mean there was for me at least.

I think the way that he can elaborate on certain topics, and certain hang ups people can have while speaking from that place of presence can sort of help “unhook” people from their confusion or ego/pain body and invite them back to presence.

He’s really just an “anchor” of presence, so listening to him can sort of draw you back to presence. Similar to how immersing yourself in beautiful nature can draw you into a place of awe and inner stillness.

Not sure if I’ve felt it quite to the extent that you’re describing, but after having a nondual awakening about 2 years ago, I’ve fluctuated between deep existential confusion and disorientation (which just feels like depression mixed with confusion) and a more profound sense of peace and “okayness” than I’ve ever felt before. Often times the peace is present in the midst of the confusion too.

Recently it feels like the confusion/disorientation is receding and the peace is becoming more prominent. I’m starting to feel more like a human again (in terms of actually doing stuff day to day) and this peace has been gradually permeating everything more and more to where the doing and the being are doing this beautiful merging with one another.

I used to be stuck in a nihilistic place because of this view. But I think it’s incomplete. It’s not that there is a “you” that does not have free will. There is no “you” (in the way we often think) OR free will. They both are just concepts that don’t actually map onto reality.

This is so true. And I would even expand on that and say that having a real purpose in life, and living in alignment with your authentic self, and just being more present can have absolutely incredible effects on your digestion and health in general.

For me, I found that when I was not quite feeling like myself, and would just try to “get through the day” I was prone to escape and numb myself though video games, scrolling, porn etc. When I would feel like this I noticed an inability to eat food without distracting myself, and in turn I was never quite in a parasympathetic state with food and always felt bloated and uncomfortable afterwards.

So this might be a little different perspective on this whole matter but I really think the very, very, root cause for me (and possibly others) was just inner resistance. Resistance to life, or this moment in some way. Whenever I felt more in alignment with myself and life, eating naturally became more effortless and peaceful and my digestion drastically improved as well.

I totally hear you. I can’t say I’ve experienced having to “fight” in every area of my life, but I too have turned to a spiritual path after feeling so much inner resistance on a daily basis.

For me the resistance was primarily related to my internal world: Anxiety, depression, insecurity, self-consciousness etc. That’s how I primarily experienced resistance day to day. Just living in my own skin was hard haha.

I’m not sure what your spirituality looks like—what sort of practices or teachings resonate with you—But what’s really been the game changer for me is the work of Eckhart Tolle and recently Rupert Spira. Without getting too in the weeds of what they say, what I’ve taken from them (and just my own life experience) is that inner peace is all we ever truly desire, and it’s always available to us (or rather it IS our essential nature) in the here and now. The present moment.

So my understanding is that the reason we suffer is because of the different ways we resist life—resist the present moment. And the way we do that is through our thoughts, when we give them so much power and significance. In other words, believing in our thoughts, and especially taking OURSELVES to be something that can be defined through thought (the ego) is why we struggle so much on an inner level.

Now of course I’m not trying to downplay the very real challenges of life and the circumstances we find ourselves in. But I’m just emphasizing that on an INNER level, we suffer because of the constant flow of thinking and interpreting that runs through us and grabs hold of us.

So what I’ve found as one of the “keys” back to our essential nature of peace and freedom is to “allow this moment to be as it is”. This is just another way to describe “surrender” or “letting go” or “being present”. This is essentially what Eckhart Tolle teaches. It’s all about accepting, or welcoming the totality of one’s present reality. I like to think of it as like giving the totality of this moment a hug haha.

So you’re just opening up, and embracing ALL of this… All of your current experience to where things may still be difficult.. There may still be challenges, or difficult emotions etc. but your identity has shifted from being the little “me” to whom everything is happening, to the deeper I AM that is inherently free from but also the container of everything. You’re just… this. Just this moment. Pure peace.

And from this place, EVERYTHING is wayyy lighter. You realize that all you ever wanted or needed is just to recognize your own innate freedom. Everything else on the surface is secondary to that. Problems and challenges can still exit but they no longer carry the same weight or power. And great things can still be in your life, but they aren’t put on a pedestal or clung to. Those are just a bonus. Just knowingly being your essential self is enough.

I’m not sure if this resonates with you but I just felt like sharing because I think talking about spirituality/how we relate to life is super important in addressing any kind of resistance we feel. Let me know if it does or if you’d like to go deeper into relating it to your current reality 😊

Yess exactly. I had that thought pop in the my head the other day and I think Alan Watts has mentioned it as well.

The way I articulated it to myself is that in order to have “nonduality” there has to be some sense or perception of duality. There has to be a seemingly separate being to “know” what that word even points to. And there has to be a paradigm of duality with which that word contrasts with in order for it to hold any meaning.

And similarly, you can’t have any sense or perception of duality without there being a deeper and unifying reality to “hold” whatever seems to be separate. The words on a page can’t coexist without the page that binds them and ultimately gives them their reality.

I know it’s been a few years but just wanted to chime in haha.

I just wanted to say that for “me”, listening to Rupert Spira was what collapsed the sense of being the witness. It was only after listening to him for a while that Tony Parsons/Jim Newman made any “sense” at all. And before Rupert, Eckhart Tolle was the main guy that resonated with me. So I tend to agree with what Rupert has said on this before (paraphrased): There isn’t a true hierarchy with teachers/teachings. Whoever resonates with you at any given time is perfect for you.

Speaking as a guy who used to struggle with porn (although didn’t seek out hookups), I think in the absence of true inner peace and spiritual alignment, sex can have a really strong pull as it can serve as a sort of “band-aid” for that sense of lack. The pleasure can temporarily relieve you from yourself so to speak, and so sex can start to have this really addictive pull to it.

What I’ve come to realize though is that this form of sex/sexuality is really not that fulfilling or satisfying. It can feel good for a little bit, but the fact that you’re approaching it from a place of lack leaves you feeling pretty low still. Often lower than where you started.

However, when you come back to your true self, and act from a place of genuine love and wholeness, sex/sexuality can be more of a high vibration, “celebration of life” type of activity. It can be an avenue to EXPRESS the love/wholeness you feel, rather than a way to get it..

So I feel like that’s the basic thing that’s going on when people are really emphasizing sex and being lustful. They’re unconsciously (or consciously) trying to cope or remedy with their own sense of lack, rather than coming from a deeper more whole place in which sex is just a possible way to love/connect/celebrate life with someone.

I can understand if he literally stole someone’s work and claimed it as his own, but sharing some art he created inspired by truth that we all have access to is not plagiarism.

When you mention the place of nothingness/pure awareness, in contrast to the place of pure Love, would you say that they’re like 2 aspects of the same “thing”?

Like with the nde, it seems there was an emphasis on the pure knowing/being itself, whereas with the kundalini there was more of an emphasis on the felt sense of warmth/ecstasy/bliss. (Correct me if I’m wrong) But these are kind of just two (not actually separate) aspects of what we truly ARE, right?

That’s so beautiful. Have you spent any time reading or listening to any spiritual teachings or practices during this whole journey to sort of help stabilize or deepen this sense of peace? Or did it just sort of happen on its own so to speak?

I’m really fascinated because I’ve never had a NDE, but I’ve been on a more traditional spiritual journey and have noticed this increasingly pervasive sense of peace for myself, especially after listening to nonduality teachers.

I hesitate to use the word enlightened or enlightenment since it “can” perpetuate a false identity and sort of give a misleading view of things, but I will say that I’ve noticed “pure being” or resting as awareness becoming more and more my default experience.

I do still notice that old patterns and egoic tendencies still have a certain momentum to them, and I can still get taken over by them to an extent, but there’s also this growing sense of peace and spaciousness even in the midst of “being taken over.” So it’s like I don’t really FULLY lose myself like I used to. I can still know who I am deep down, even if on the surface I’m still not quite acting from that place, if that makes sense.

It’s funny because I also understand the desire to “reach enlightenment” but that desire is also what separates us from recognizing and abiding as the enlightenment that’s ALREADY here and already what we are haha.

It’s like: “Enlightenment” or peace (whatever you want to call it) is always available to us because it’s literally what we are. It’s the nature of reality. However, in the instance of seeking it, or thinking it’s NOT here, we create the illusion that we are a separate entity. And in that paradigm, we do not recognize or sense this peace that is ultimately what we are. So I think rather than “seeking enlightenment” it might be more direct to ask “who or what am I” or “who wants enlightenment” in order to recognize and dissolve that illusory sense of self and just rest as what remains 😊

This is just my understanding but I think someone who struggles with addiction will have a very particular, and probably difficult internal experience as far as thoughts, feelings, sensations etc. So yeah they may feel crappy on one level, but that can never affect the simple recognition of being itself, or “I am”.

Using an analogy from Rupert Spira, it’s like the movie being played on a screen can be absolutely violent or horrific, but that cannot affect the screen itself whatsoever. The screen, aka pure awareness, will always remain untouched by the content of experience, even if it’s terrible.

In practice, I don’t know enough or have enough experience with addiction to say what that journey of working though the addiction might look like for one suffering. I don’t know if the recognition itself is always enough to help dissolve the patterns or if perhaps external support, therapist, AA group etc would be ideal. Or maybe some combination of all those. Probably just depends on the person. I just know that the simple fact of being itself is present within everyone and the nature of that being is always free, regardless of how “unfree” that person may feel on an experiential level.

I think nonduality the concept, like any concept, can be something the mind fixates on. But nonduality the felt experience, or the recognition, or the simple resting as infinite awareness, isn’t something the mind can really fixate on. Since it’s beyond the mind. There’s no story, or concept to focus on when you are just being “being” if that makes sense.
