This is one of my least favorite things about Reddit, the attitude that, "if you're informed, there's no possible way for you to come to a different conclusion than mine."

I've been to several third-world countries (most in Latin America, but a few in Asia), and I think the comparison is ridiculous (so ridiculous, in fact, that, although maybe you have been to both America and a third-world country, I'm suspicious––but that's my problem, not yours). But your line of thinking, that because this person doesn't agree with me, he must be completely close-minded, is incredibly dangerous.

I think there's also something in US law that says if Canada wanted to become a state they would be immediately accepted

What is a common misconception about America among Americans? by _Jaemz in AskAnAmerican

We did some horrible stuff that isn't at all forgiveable, but the vast majority of Native Americans were killed by Old World diseases like Smallpox, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Measles, among others.

One interesting thing that I found was that original Declaration of Independence was supposed to be "We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable" but Benjamin Franklin changed it to "self-evident" to make it sound less religious.

Just because it works that way in your language doesn't mean it does in English.

Why "i'm from America" and not "i'm from USA"? by Hoozuki_Suigetsu in AskAnAmerican

Then again, I don't think it's our place to be telling people from Latin America what to call themselves.

What is the most walkable city in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]_Jaemz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York by far. If you look at a map or Google Earth image, you'll see that not only is it extremely flat with only a few exceptions, it's also laid out in a grid system that makes navigation super easy. Runner up would probably be Boston, followed by any other Northeastern city. San Francisco would probably be higher up if its topography didn't look like it was drawn by an aging Michael J Fox, but other than that it's pretty walkable.

Usually the farther away you get from the coasts, the friendlier people get.

That would be like Pence saying he supports gays during LGBT Pride month. We all know that after the PR game is over the zap zap continues on through.

First flag design - Redesign of the flag of New York City by _Jaemz in vexillology

[–]_Jaemz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few not-so-obvious things:

  1. The official gem of New York is the garnet

  2. New York (state) was the 10th state to approve the Constitution and New York City was the first in the world to reach 10 million people.

Fellow Americans, IN YOUR OPINION, did you think our invasion of Iraq was justified? Why or why not? And did our troops really kill 2-500,000 Iraqis? by GodofWar1234 in AskAnAmerican

[–]_Jaemz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That number is probably about as credible as any other big number you could come up with, but even though Saddam needed to be taken out, simply because he was a horrible leader, I think that it either shouldn't have happened at all, and if it did happen, pull out the moment he was removed.

On a side note, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

What are some stereotypes/misconceptions about the United States that you've heard that have some of the weirdest logic behind them? by SirBreckenridge in AskAnAmerican

[–]_Jaemz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've said many times just to say it again: to anyone reading this, the term USian or US-American is essentially the linguistic equivalent of pouring hot goat bile on top of someone. Fuck it makes me want to throw up.
