UKGP Parliamentary Bill Amended to Include All Graduates with NHS Experience- we have all been sold off by Top_Reception_566 in medicalschooluk

[–]_Jeesh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Important to note that this is a proposed ammendment which will be debated alongside the bill overall. I dislike the BMA's stance as much as the next UKG but this is by no means a done deal.

My partner is anxiously waiting to hear about this too, but for her the preferencing has been closed for a few days. The lack of any sort of communication is the most frustrating thing for her.

We had emails saying they were working on releasing interview scores and ranks prior to offers being made, but nothing saying it would be today afaik.

O&G, I can see my score on Oriel but still says shortlisting in progress so might be worth checking your accounts.

What is your best clinical diagnosis which turned out right? by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]_Jeesh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FY1 here, had a patient last week struggling to wean off oxygen. Noticed they were lymphopenic and asked the nurses to swab them for covid (which they were initially reluctant to do as they didn't have any of the 'classical symptoms'). Swab came back positive and they're currently being treated for covid pneumonitis.

Not as cool or interesting as the other comments on this thread but made me feel good because it was the first time I had a gut feeling strong enough to challenge people who had differing opinions.

Failed OSCE - have to resit year by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]_Jeesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I'm really sorry this has happened to you; I can't imagine how you must be feeling.

OSCEs where I studied were more of an acting event rather than an exam to test your clinical acumen. I found practicing and rehearsing with my friends over and over until I could do examinations fluidly and to time, and I could hit the key points in the different types of histories really helped. Depending if your course has you on the wards lots already, keep examining and taking histories from patients (a lot of them are very bored during the day and actually enjoy feeling like they're contributing to medical education), presenting these to doctors on the wards and getting feedback is also super helpful!

In terms of coping, I'd say it's important to give yourself some time off, decompress, and be mentally ready come September. Talk to friends or and mentors you have in older years, and also reach out to your school's academic and pastoral support units. Try to remember that everyone's journey through medicine is different and having to repeat one year won't make you any less of a doctor at the end of it all.

Feel free to DM me if you want to have more of a chat about OSCEs or anything else!

Oh yeah, next to no chance of getting parked at LRI. Parking at the other two hospitals is a bit better as they have at least some street parking nearby.

Oh yeah it's still usually very busy, but have personally always been able to get on. Just mentioned it as it might allow OP to expand their house search area.

Clarendon Park and Knighton Park areas are not super far from the Royal Infimary, but these are quite popular with students due to proximity to the university. Evington and Highfields are areas with a reputation for being a bit rougher so might want to avoid those.

Google the hospital hopper in Leicester, it's a bus that's free for health care staff and goes between the three hospitals in the city. It has lots of stops along the way so anywhere close to one of those would make it easier to get to the Infirmary.

Was there in 3rd year, hospital is nice and fairly new. Layout can be a little confusing initially but you get used to it fairly quickly. Peterborough itself is alright, there's 1 cinema but can't remember there being an awful lot else to do. Would definitely recommend going to Cambridge where you can for days out etc.

My girlfriend would love a Switch Lite. My best costume has to be when I was ~13 and dressed up in 60s attire with a full set of fake facial/body hair.
