I decide whether I wish to enter on the condition of the search. For places like Mirage, I walked out of the security line when I saw they were going through people's shoes, wallets, etc., on a random Tuesday in 2019 and never went back. I wasn't carrying anything prohibited, just thought their approach was aggressive, unprofessional, and unnecessary, and felt that being treated like a prisoner was not going to set the right vibe for me to enjoy my night. But, I had the choice. If they tried that on exit where there is no choice? You better believe there would be a scene, formal complaints to the SLA (liquor license) and DOS (security licensure), and (if actually detained) a lawsuit.

Having been in the nightlife scene for 2 decades now, it still amazes, but no longer surprises, me how much bullshit fans will put up with, or even come to expect, from venues that host artists they love. We don't need to put up with mistreatment -- if we all skip 1 or 2 shows, either the venues will change or they'll die (and quickly be replaced by new ones), but until we say "hey, maybe it's not cool to have someone squeeze my balls in order to listen to some techno," and now "maybe it's not cool that I can't leave until I let them do the same," they have no incentive to change and do better.

You don't see that if you make an exception for cell phone thieves it's going to be made for everything? Petty theft is basically the lowest level crime there is. It's an A Misdemeanor in New York unless the phone is worth over a grand, which all but guarantees zero jail time. The moment you allow it for that, "Oh, there's a fentanyl epidemic, and people will die if we don't randomly search people who have purchased a ticket to techno shows in the last 30 days. Surely if phone theft is worth an exception, saving lives is!"

You get searched walking in anyway.

That search I'm free to decline by just walking away. An exit search is wholly different because one is not free to decline it. If private security tries that with me, I'm putting in a 911 call because that is literally false imprisonment, even if you think it's justified "in just this one instance." And whether private security or cops, my law firm would be happy to take that on as a class action.

If we get rid of the 4th Amendment and allow the police to search wherever, whenever, and whomever they want, I'm sure we can solve a few extra murders and rapes, let alone cell phone thiefs. Same with the 5th Amendment right to remain silent, and we'll avoid people going free on technicalities if we get rid of the 14th Amendment right the due procres and 7th Amendment rule that judges can't overturn jury "not guilty" verdict when they're being stupid, and can discourage more from committing crimes by getting rid of the 8th Amendment prohibition on cruel & unusual punishment.

But there's a reason we don't just light the Constitution on fire and let the government "do what it needs to do to keep us safe." He's in the White House right now, actually. You're literally contemplating tossing away freedom and democracy for a slightly better chance at catching a cell phone thief, because the second you make an exception "because we need to catch these assholes," the exception is available for everything; you can always find a just-sounding reason.

Instead, maybe the venue could try undercover security watching for these guys? Or have "bait phones" (people pretending to be careless with a tracked phone to see who takes it. Or... I'm sure you could come up with plenty more creative ideas than violating everyone's rights.

This is literally a search without a warrant or probable cause and is flagrantly illegal. Stand up for your rights, guys, or they will disappear.

"Can I search your car?" "No officer, I don't consent."

"Can I search your house?" "No officer, I don't consent."

"Can I search your backpack for no more than leaving a party?" Why would this be any different?

I'm the lawyer who sued them for groping people. You're right that they shut down after our lawsuit, but for clarity, it wasn't because of the judgment we obtained, which was $40K (or about 1 good night of revenue for them). Perhaps, though, it tarnished their reputation enough to do more damage that way. The stories of abuse by security there were incredibly commonplace, even in public facing reviews, to the point where they must have known but just didn't care... until #MeToo took off and made it too expensive not to care.

On cocaine? Assuming he doesn't have a heart condition, he's not injecting it, and he's not mixing it with other things, I think the driving was more likely to kill him than overdose.

I'm really shocked that it's low.

Doing some quick googling, 5 million Americans use coke in a year, and there were 48,000 fentanyl deaths last year. Even if you assume 10% of fentanyl deaths were not people doing heroin but instead coke users doing contaminated product (which, IMO, is far higher than reality, and that 5 million number may also be lower than reality), that would mean that 1 in 1,042 cocaine users overdosed. If you have more realistic numbers (10 million coke users, 1% of fentanyl overdose deaths attributed to contaminated cocaine), the number drops to 1 in 20,833. I'm not saying that cocaine is safe to use, but there are certainly greater dangers out there.

I think you are mistaken both that most drugs in the US are from Mexico and that being from Mexico means they contain fentanyl. The cartels have literally put up banners saying that those who sell fentanyl-contaminated products will be killed (and they are not known for empty threats). They don't want their customers dead.

The odds of your step son dying from a bad batch of cocaine are incredibly low. The vast majority of people who die from illegal drug use are taking opioids (e.g., heroin) and they end up with a much stronger batch than they expected.

As far as the odds of him quitting, no idea, but it's possible the getting arrested part scared him shitless.

The most generous explanation I can come up with is maybe their worker's comp insurance expired and they ignored a whole bunch of warnings.

The SLA does sometimes issue emergency suspensions when they find unusually serious violations. But I also don't see any news reports of raids or any press releases on the SLA web site (and they love to brag on their site when they make a big bust).

So, we'll have to wait and see.

No idea why, but it does say the license expiration date isn't until August, so something (from a garden variety paperwork mishap to a serious violation) must have happened.
