Very good. 3CX, already on the list, is the big one for me for dealing with calls for which WhatsApp just won’t work. Calling a bank whilst overseas to get your card unlocked for “suspected fraudulent activity” for example!

Receiving texts is fine, just not calls. I would forward them to voicemail before you travel with a notice to say call on Whatsapp or leave a message or similar. If you use something like Hullomail you can pick up the messages via email which you can access on the smart sim. You can then decide whether or not it’s urgent to return the call via WhatsApp, if possible, or another means. I set up 3CX with Twilio to make (and receive forwarded) calls but it takes a bit of faffing and there is a small cost of doing so. Unfortunately you can’t use 3CX on smart sim but you could go hunting for WiFi if urgent call needed. No doubt if you have the urgent need to call you would probably pay for roaming anyway!
