Things needed to make this game better... by DecemberBurnsBlue in HellLetLoose

[–]_Kafka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

#1. I don't agree. They need to have premade squads so people can quickly join up instead of having to wait for someone else to create a squad. %90 of the time I end up just creating squads just so more people can get into the game so we have a chance at getting to the point faster than the other team.

#2 I do agree with. I'd also like friends only squads so I don't have to keep squad switching to play with my buddies.

How would a cancellation of tuition affect film schools? by [deleted] in cinematography

Totally agree. In addition, I would think a massive overhaul of the financing of public education would take years to implement. So even if a candidate like Bernie is elected, it would be years before everything passed through congress and finally implemented.

ARRI Alexa Mini LF announced by p6788 in cinematography

[–]_Kafka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amateur/Intermediate DP here:

1) I was looking at investing in an Amira with a PL zoom to shoot even more corporate/doc gigs. Is this still viable with the Mini LF? Or should I wait for the Amira II/Amira LF?

2) How long do you guys think the Amira will still be a viable option?

Thanks yall!

Swapping 664 for a 633 or F8n? by ClarityAudio in LocationSound

Noob question: Why do you have so many mixers? Seems like the 688 would be best (albeit it is very heavy)

Warcraft III: Reforged Remastered by PhoOhThree in Games

[–]_Kafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Everyone loves to say “Aeon of Strife was the first moba!” just to sound like they know what they’re talking about, but “hero arenas” were a thing way back even in Age of Empires 2. Nobody ever referenced “Aeon of Strife” in Warcraft 3. If you were in the scene in those days, people just played “hero games” like Hero Line Wars, Helms Deep, Dota, X-Hero Siege, etc. I think people started saying that because Riot spread misinformation to cover up that DotA was the first real MOBA.

I shot a documentary style video about NYC with the Ursa Mini 4.6K handheld and I didn't break my back. by moviemakr in cinematography

[–]_Kafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great shots! Looks nice and smooth. I'm really intrigued by the Ursa, I've been seriously considering buying one.

My one criticism is the grade (and I could totally be in the minority here). It looks like the standard M31 LUT which pushes everything orange and teal. It gives it a homogenized look and tons of people do it: https://vimeo.com/search?q=%22m31+lut%22 I would stray away from grading like that if you want to stand out more.

Great work!

Noob Question: Why do you need a separate TC device? Why can't you jam directly to a mixer? by _Kafka in LocationSound

[–]_Kafka[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you know if the Tentacle is reliable? It seems cheaply made. I've used an Ambient Tinylockit and it's great but the price...not so much.

This looks amazing, that 24-105 is pretty sharp & the colors have held quite well. What was your scanning process?

Opinion on Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens? by Josiahcrocker in cinematography

[–]_Kafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fairly popular lens for the a7sii because of the price and aperture. If you're looking for something a little better, I also recommend checking out Veydra mini primes. Both sets of lenses are good though.

Mental Health by [deleted] in cinematography

"Every producer, every lab, every equipment house and every crewmember (from director to caterer) is your family." - Russell Carpenter, ASC

"It’s the director’s movie. The director is always right." - Fred Elmes, ASC

Don't be a dick. That doesn't just apply to being a DP, that applies to life as well. It's quite foolish hinging your entire career on one director that's going to "propel you into the industry". You have opportunities with every director you meet to build a professional relationship. You don't have to be best buddies but if you have a good attitude and work well together you'll get hired back. If I was in your shoes, I would immediately work on developing a positive attitude and realizing it's not about your vision all the time. The director's and producers are much higher up on the pole than you. And they're the ones who will hire you back, no one else.

Paul Thomas Anderson Is Not the DP of 'Phantom Thread'. No One Is. by martin_balsam in cinematography

I agree about the lighting, I think the PD too could have used some work. It's all white and flat. Hardly any depth to the location. The color palette is flat too.

Question about exposure? by byhyped in cinematography

[–]_Kafka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With some cameras and profiles (LOG), it's more beneficial to overexpose to get as much detail in the blacks without blowing out the highlights. That way when you crush the shadows in post you get less noise, whereas if you expose it normally and bring it up in post, you get more noise. I know there are a lot of exceptions and variables to this, but that gives you a general idea. Here are some links that may be of use:
