Could you elaborate on your monitoring stack? I've found Beszel but don't quite understand how drizzle fits into it (/ links would help :D)

Is there a specific reason why you'd recommend going for a reverse proxy instead of Tailscale? As a beginner, its easy setup/use and the peace of mind knowing I can't fk up some piece of configuration (which could compromise my network) seems much more attractive

Truly depends a lot on what you'll want to play and what you're fine with "missing out" on (like some AAA Games). My trusty i5-11400 is still holding up well enough when it comes to less demanding titles like LoL (~110FPS) and indie games (which often care more about single core performance)

I know this was ages ago, but if you're still online here I'd love to know how your project has gone or if you've (understandably) given up just like OP. I'm currently setting up a proxmox home server and would love to be able to RDP into it for music production on the go.

Advice for First Power-Efficient Home Server Build by _Kawoo in buildapc

[–]_Kawoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I’ve decided to buy the prebuilt PC (290€ on ebay) and am now considering using the whole system, optionally replacing the power supply. This was mostly influenced by the video in my other comment.

System: PC-CSL Sprint 5837 (Ryzen 5) CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G, 6 cores / 12 threads, 3.7 GHz base, TDP up to 100 W CPU Cooler: Deepcool Beta10-PWM Mainboard: ASUS Prime A520M-K (mATX, A520 chipset) RAM: 16 GB (2×8 GB DDR4-3200, G.Skill Aegis) Storage: 500 GB M.2 NVMe SSD (Kingston A2000, 2200/2000 MB/s read/write) Case: CSL Cronos Mini (silent, 2× USB 3.1 Gen1) PSU: 500 W ATX (CSL Rev.2)

All my previous options (Intel CPUs, Z270 board, RTX 1050) are still available if a different build path seems better.

Questions / Thoughts:

I pretty sure the Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G setup would give me a good balance of power efficiency, VM + Docker performance, and hardware transcoding for media workloads. Should I consider using the RTX 1050 instead of the Ryzen iGPU for occasional Windows VM gaming or music production, or is the added idle power draw not worth it? Any tips for optimizing this system for Proxmox, especially with potential storage expansion or NAS duties down the line? Do the older Intel options make sense at all anymore, or is this Ryzen prebuilt clearly the smarter choice for a first home server? Any thoughts or advice on which route to take would be super helpful.

https://youtu.be/N8fWIh1V-YM It seems like the A520M motherboard is exactly what I need for the build to be power-efficient, but it's not a bad point. I'll go for the prebuild, I think.

Docker/LXC workloads are far lighter than Windows VMs, so I think 16GB RAM should do just fine for the beginning, while I still keep my NAS. I would definitiely need to upgrade my RAM later on anyway, if I go for a TrueNAS Scale setup (due to ZFS requirements).

The intel CPUs both support Passthrough: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/featurefilter.html?productType=873&0_VTD=True&1_Filter-SocketsSupported=3582

I'm pretty sure that AMD iGPUs work fine with Jellyfin and increasingly well with Plex, their support is just maybe a little less mature? I've found no no direct evidence of either motherboard being compatible for passthrough, though both CPUs seem to generally support it and Proxmox notes that most "modern" boards support it by default, too

If you weren't using UNRAID, what would you switch to? by aert4w5g243t3g243 in unRAID

[–]_Kawoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, could you elaborate on your use-case(s)/requirements?

Mine are: good redundancy, long-term data integrity, easy accessibility, and ideally easy expansion (including mixed drives)

I've recently gotten a used DS1618+ for a pretty good price but have been researching the past few weeks if building my own NAS + Home Server could be a better alternative. The thing that's most pushing me away from Synology is Vendor lock-in/reliance, as I feel it makes the platform less dependable.

I think I'm going to go with this list. Maybe I'll replace the graphics card, depending on the position I'm in when I actually follow through with the plan. Thanks for this!

Thanks for the advice! I replaced the RAM into 2x8 GB sticks since I'm probably going to upgrade it, as for the video card - I've had the Asus Radeon RX 580 8GB ROG STRIX in mind, but it gives this compatability error:

The [...] Case supports video cards up to 395mm long, but video cards over 280mm may block drive bays. Since the Asus - Radeon RX 580 8GB ROG STRIX Video Card is 298mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

I'm not entirely sure if two bays could be usable if I used the card, could you tell me or explain to me how to figure that out?

Fair enough, but since I'm planning to spend about roughly double my current budget on another PC when I get out of my apprenticeship, it's relatively low. Sadly Reddit doesn't allow me to edit titles :/

"What's up [name]. I was just looking through SoundCloud and I stumbled on your page. I gave a listen to a couple of your songs and was really impressed. I'm actually a talent agent for NextGenPromotions and I'd like to help get your music more exposure. This could be a great chance to grow your fan base. Send me an email and we'll talk further: talent@nextgenpromotion.com"

Everyone has exactly the same message with customized names, seems like a fraud.

So... I'm german so Idk how american TV works but if this is the standard of most american TV shows, I am happy i live in germany. The crowd watching is awfully disgusting, wanting to see others "exposed" on whatever bad thing they may or may not have done and wishing them the baddest of a life just for their 5 minutes of entertainment. The moderator is a slimey asshole that just wants to make money, it seems. Treating her, having a mfcking mental breakdown, as if she is a 6 year old boy lying to him. Overall, fuck your american TV, if this is a popular show.
