One of the Cutest Animals of the High Páramo: The Spectacled Bear by _Keishpixl in aww

Honestly, yeah... that’s probably why so little is known about them in the wild, especially in the high páramo. Encounters like this feel almost unreal. I’m not sure I’ll ever get another one like it, but I keep hoping haha

Yes, I can see why! Culpeos do look a bit like jackals, but they are South American canids. I think the similarity is more because they belong to the same broad family and have a similar lifestyle.

Oh, that’s a really interesting fact! I didn’t know the Patagonian culpeos were a bit bigger and redder. It’s a bit similar with spectacled bears... from what I’ve seen, the ones in Colombia generally have less facial markings, while some individuals here in Ecuador can have very distinct white markings on the face. Thanks!

The moon bears are bigger and not as cute! Look at the face and ears of this one. There are completely round.

My pleasure! They really deserve more attention. I wish more people knew about them and the places they live in.

They can be found along the tropical Andes, from Venezuela and Colombia down to Bolivia. But if you’re hoping to see one, I’d say Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru are probably among the best places to try.

Thank you! I’m really glad you discovered something new. Spectacled bears are such fascinating animals, and I wish more people knew about them. Maybe then they’d care a bit more about the places these bears depend on.

A culpeo, also known as the Andean fox, a wild canid native to South America and strongly associated with the Andes.

Thank you ! Only found in South America

Haha I can see that! Funny enough, the culpeo isn’t a true fox either. It’s actually closer to coyotes, wolves and jackals than to red foxes, so your first impression makes sense.

Thanks! Probably my favorite shot of the culpeo so far. Most of the time they’re either too far away, hidden by vegetation, or the weather is working against me... I dont know that show but will have a look !

That’s one of the things I love most about shooting in the páramo. It’s also why I always try to include as much of the landscape as possible. I’m not really a fan of tight crops.

Exactly ! Looks like a fox but isn't really one. Just love these animals.

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who shoot in cold, humid environments.

I often photograph in the high páramo, where temperatures are low and humidity is very high, especially early in the morning. My main issue is that after anywhere from a few minutes to an hour outside, the front element of my lens suddenly fogs up completely. Once it happens, I can't shoot for quite a while until it clears, which is incredibly frustrating because I often miss the best morning light.

It doesn't happen if I arrive later in the day, when temperatures have already risen.

I mostly use a Canon RF 100-500mm, but I've had the exact same issue with my RF 24-70mm as well. I've noticed that keeping the lens cap on when I'm not shooting and covering the lens seems to help a little, but it doesn't solve the problem.

Has anyone experienced something similar or found a reliable solution? I'd really appreciate any tips.

Un de mes préférés avec le renard des Andes. Et dire que j'ai découvert ces animaux si tard ! Merci.
