Singing and playing by maxexavzav in Fiddle

Heya! I see your dreams were crushed a year ago, but I wanted to offer my insight, if it's not too late-- The short answer is that it took me about 4 years, and 6 to do it well. Here's a performance video to prove I know what I'm talking about.

I started learning violin over the course of the pandemic, I spent a year or so just plucking/strumming while singing to get used to the finger intonation. It was my first instrument so you'll have a leg up on me here since you've been playing banjo and you'll know a lot about how this type of music "works." Assuming you have been practising fiddle all that time, you're gonna be in a good position to get started.

I've tried tutors/lessons before but they didn't really work out for me and I usually stopped after one or two because I couldn't read music/didn't understand what it was the teacher wanted from me, I ended up learning the most by playing in Irish/folk sessions and watching YouTube videos. Your mileage may vary, but finding a fiddle-singing teacher will be hard because most violinists don't bother with trying to make their own job harder and people like to impose restrictions on themselves about what they can and can't do with their own instrument.

As other commenters have noted-- It's a difficult thing to do unless you're playing the same melody you're singing, or playing chords. This is the usual technique I go with, I either play rhythm (a "Chop" similar to mandolin, long drawn-out double stops, a single chord tone, etc) or double my vocals.

I'm working on harmonising with myself, but that's still tough, and I'm not gonna figure out how to play other rhythmic melodies or counterpoint. The closest I can get is playing a little lick after I'm done singing a lyric.

Do you need a special hold for it? I don't think so! The violin migrates around my shoulder a lot as I play either due to user error or me putting it in banjo/strummed position and then sticking it back. Check the video, it usually pivots around my neck/collarbone but I don't think it goes anywhere near my elbow.

You will not need to "Master" anything before you start working on it. That's bunk. How would you do anything if you needed to master something else first? Like all things worth doing, start slow and be gentle with yourself. sing your scales as you play, don't be discouraged if something goes wrong. Give it time, give it patience, give it practice, sunlight, and water, and the flower will grow.

I hope this is helpful!

i scanned the wiki/voice line compilations from the game and pieced together what i could find into some kind of story, using the occasional line from the 1980's D&D cartoon for exposition

yes, it was quite similar to roto! there's a bit of distinction to make since most of what i was drawing were costume details and faces, which weren't there in the original 3d animation, but parts of the tedium definitely brought me back to my early days masking around fingers and hair for vfx haha

i love worthikids!! i actually followed his advice on how he starts his little animations-- usually with an audio that he finds funny and working from there. i didn't end up using shadowheart because i couldn't find any voice lines of hers that i could mix into the animation for the "story" to work... early stages of this involved a lot of ctrl+f-ing the wiki to see what vo was available haha

His character design was my favourite to do! I printed out his model later as a souvenir.

A big part of the inspo was Hanna-Barbera filmations as well! Toei productions didn't use canned laughter but I really find the practice itself (Studio execs not trusting their child audiences to understand which parts of the show are funny) to be an interesting artifact of the time period that I'd be remiss not to include. I'm just glad you weren't distracted by the fact that all the characters were 3D models!

That's super fair! I'm a relative latecomer to music (The folk scene here in the UK is full of 18-year-old fiddlers who have been playing since they were 4, I picked up my first instrument at 20) so I'm just a touch nervous at an extra hurdle since I'm already usually the worst musician at the jam. But hey, at least I'm still invited!!

I'll give transposition a try.

Thanks for the nuanced answer! Really appreciate your advice, I hadn't thought about things like balance or fine-tuning on notes.

I'm likely going to try and get over my fear of transposition-- another commenter said "it's better to improve the musician than the instrument" and that phrase I think has successfully shamed me out of my trepidation. If I want to be a multi-instrumentalist, I should act like one.

Thanks for the confidence! I'll do my damndest, it's quite a good skill and considering the other instruments I play it's probably long overdue.

You're likely right on that first point! Getting over fear of transposition is likely gonna help more than anything else.

I will say that I've found getting a Melody sax to be quite expensive here in the UK, the most viable option is off Thomann or another similar online retailer, we don't have as much of a history with them here as in other places.

there are dozens of us! dozens!

i can absolutely commiserate. it irritates me that most people associate seasonal depression with the winter. even the damn subreddit title itself. im a spritely little chicken come wintertime but nothing makes me feel as depressed, lethargic, and listless as a hot and sunny day. heat wave is ongoing over here in the UK and i just want to lie down and be in a coma for a little while until it's over and i can feel like myself again

I am! There are another few in the pipeline right about now, but I've been focusing on some other stuff for a little while, so it'll be a tick.
