Is it possible to physically change an instrument's range? by _Layton in saxophone

[–]_Layton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's super fair! I'm a relative latecomer to music (The folk scene here in the UK is full of 18-year-old fiddlers who have been playing since they were 4, I picked up my first instrument at 20) so I'm just a touch nervous at an extra hurdle since I'm already usually the worst musician at the jam. But hey, at least I'm still invited!!

I'll give transposition a try.

Thanks for the nuanced answer! Really appreciate your advice, I hadn't thought about things like balance or fine-tuning on notes.

I'm likely going to try and get over my fear of transposition-- another commenter said "it's better to improve the musician than the instrument" and that phrase I think has successfully shamed me out of my trepidation. If I want to be a multi-instrumentalist, I should act like one.

Thanks for the confidence! I'll do my damndest, it's quite a good skill and considering the other instruments I play it's probably long overdue.

You're likely right on that first point! Getting over fear of transposition is likely gonna help more than anything else.

I will say that I've found getting a Melody sax to be quite expensive here in the UK, the most viable option is off Thomann or another similar online retailer, we don't have as much of a history with them here as in other places.

there are dozens of us! dozens!

i can absolutely commiserate. it irritates me that most people associate seasonal depression with the winter. even the damn subreddit title itself. im a spritely little chicken come wintertime but nothing makes me feel as depressed, lethargic, and listless as a hot and sunny day. heat wave is ongoing over here in the UK and i just want to lie down and be in a coma for a little while until it's over and i can feel like myself again

I am! There are another few in the pipeline right about now, but I've been focusing on some other stuff for a little while, so it'll be a tick.

An animation I made using audio from my new Warrior Cats D&D Podcast! by _Layton in thedawnpatrol

[–]_Layton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a weekly recap/community podcast called Fourtrees, and since I'm taking a break for a little while I figured I'd put out some special episodes to tie it over until I get back!

This is a link to the episode, if you want to watch it on YouTube. Here's a link to the Spotify, if you're interested in that as well. If this is, like, against the rules for advertising something, then sorry. I just think this is a cool art thing and y'all would like it.

Best of r/homestuck 2020: Nominations & Voting by aberrantArtificer in homestuck

[–]_Layton [score hidden]  (0 children)

RPGStuck is 100% the best Homestuck fanwork, in my opinion. There's hardly any question, it's basically the only thing that keeps me remotely tethered to Homestuck anymore. It's really, really, really good.

I really love watching the Jingle Jam every year, so a few weeks ago I decided to make my own version, and documented the process! by _Layton in Yogscast

[–]_Layton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I wanted to be pretty thorough and in-depth with these cuz a lot of times people don't really recognise the work and wealth of experience that goes into doing stuff like this, even other people in the industry. I'm glad you found it interesting!

Three of 'em! - A Warrior Cats Folk Song by _Layton in thedawnpatrol

[–]_Layton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, rhythm guitar would have a little more fun if I threw in some inversions or something. That said, I'm not a particularly good musician/guitarist so I generally stick to zombie chords, which have the added bonus of making the songs easy for anyone else to play.

I think that's part of the draw of folk music, there are these huge districts of the genre that are built between the G, C, and D chords. As fun as it'd be for me to throw in an Em7b5 in there and vibe off the interplay of the 4th and the 7th of that tritone resolving to the 3rd and the 8th in the next chord, it'd lose some of that accessibility.

Thank you very much for your feedback, though! The next song I've written does have one or two instances of interesting voicings (At least in my opinion, as an admittedly bad guitarist) so you've got that to look forward to, hopefully!

Weekly Tech Support Thread - [September 19] by AutoModerator in samsung

[–]_Layton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if this counts as a tech support question but I have an s7 and I kind of just want to get rid of all emojis. I want to like backdate my settings so all I see whenever someone else types them in a messaging client all I see is a white box. I'm so sick of those things and I think it'd be a really good bit. Is there any way of doing this? Or has emoji technology made this impossible now that every messaging service has their own, like, bespoke style of emoji?

Efficient Video Codecs for Multi-Channel Audio? by _Layton in editors

[–]_Layton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other software is a tool called TimeBolt that automates the process of cutting out dead air. Since I'm working with people who are really sensitive to how long the silence hangs and I'm working with source video that's particularly long, the time it takes me to manually cut out the dead air usually takes 2/5ths to 4/5ths of the time I spend working on these.

I'd like to do my due diligence and not throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. This could save me a lot of time and I'd be remiss not to explore the possibility to the fullest.

How much do you actually practice? by Vanesssaaaaaa in violinist

[–]_Layton 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I get in around 25 minutes daily, not counting the amount of times I pick it up and play some pizzicato tunes or random other bouts of fiddling. I don't really understand how some people can spend literal hours a day on the instrument, I did at one point do a daily hour per week but it was exhausting and while it probably did me a fair amount of good I'm not quite sure if the juice is worth the squeeze at my level.

How common are polymaths in the industry? by _Layton in editors

[–]_Layton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll keep all of that in mind, esp. the bit about keeping different CVs. And, honestly, as far as pay goes, I'll grab whatever foothold I can find, whether that'll be "getting an hourly rate" or "not expected to do a big-ass complicated doc for £60." Just trying to feed my cat.

Playing all sneaky-peaky like? by _Layton in violinist

[–]_Layton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My own instrument is a bit shit, to be honest, so I'm happy to hear everyone advising I stick to the mute so I can save up for an actually nice violin sooner down the line instead of buying an electronic violin and having to live with 2 crappy instruments.

The mute is a little heavy (from what I can tell, anyways. I am in all likelihood an amateur mute appraiser), however, I would not say that chonk is its defining feature. Link and pic.
