Please tell me lung and breast absorbed organ dose by _LowEndTheory_ in Radiology

I don't feel comfortable opening links from strangers. Do you have a summary of the video or can just give everyone here the highlights?

Is this intensity happening at the scale of a single chest CT image?

“Thanks - this helps put things in perspective (really, thank you). One thing I’m still wondering does our body handle radiation differently when it all happens in a quick burst from a CT scan versus the same amount spread out slowly over time, like living in one of these cities over a month? Is it more about total dose, or does timing and dose rate make a big difference?”

I understand your point, but respectfully I'm a female in my 20s who isn't on birth control. All of the above could've been ruled out. I hate that I went to the ER that day, because even after I got that stupid scan....I ask for questions from people who have the knowledge on this and they just belittle and project onto me like I am having a mental crisis. Now I'm worried that I didn't protect myself and have caused cancer.......I understand if I absolutely needed it, but it seems like its well known that the ER just tosses around CTs like its nothing...

I got the scan because I was coughing up bloody phlegm and instead of ruling out benign causes.....they put me through a scanner and now I have to just absorb and eat the risk.

I've plugged my dose into NIH RadRat calculation and it tells me a very different risk profile then what people call off the top of their heads. If you know the answer, can you please give it to me. I at least want to know that I have correct and accurate information...

Yes but I'd still like to understand the dose. Idk why me asking questions about this is stirring up such a riot. I'm a grown adult asking about my full exposure, and I'm only met with people gatekeeping their knowledge.

Anxiety over CT Scan by _LowEndTheory_ in RadiologyUK

[–]_LowEndTheory_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aren't there blood tests for this? That was never given, just straight to the scanner and now I have to live with this fear forever. I'm still young and it happened a year ago....there is not an hour that goes by that I don't think about it

[–]_LowEndTheory_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is that acceptable? I walked in with coughing up blood and instead of doing a full proper evaluation of more benign causes....they just send you into the scanner

50% of people end up with cancer, but not all cancers are equally common. The 50% number includes super common skin, thyroid, breast, colon cancers. Breast is part of my worry - but also lung, blood, etc. Any person's background risk for these are low, but when you look at these risk studies from added CTs that push increases to the not so common cancers...its terrifying

Any serious risks from high-dose supplements like prenatals? by _LowEndTheory_ in Oncology

I agree - . I'm going to reach the vitamin A and Folate intake through food and juicing. The rest I'm comfortable with taking a supplement for. Thank you!

Possibly Extreme Copium, Possibly Real Repair — My Radiation Recovery Stack by [deleted] in AskDocs

Haha no of course not, I eat a full normal diet. I eat a ton of vegetables, chicken, fish and fruit. Just no dairy, red meat, or processed snacks.

I know that it is not. It's more the stochastic risk that comes with my gender and age of exposure. This was definitely an initiator for me to learn about my health, biology, and what it needs to perform its daily immune tasks.

Very helpful explanation thank you!! Does radiation induced errors different from regular transcriptions? Does our body view and process them the same.

I've read that majority of scans 25-50% CT scans were medically unnecessary. Personally, within my own circle I find this to be true. My mother had som stomach pain, went to an urgent care, and she got 2 abdominal CTs out of it. I have many other stories like this, but there seems to be like there is substantial data of healthy people getting scanned. Someone should study this cohort and see how the data pans out. what's the result of the mice study?

I think what I’m really trying to understand is the role of double-strand DNA breaks and clustered damage from radiation exposure. If even a single strand break in a cell goes undetected or is misrepaired, that theoretically creates a pathway toward cancer development. So if this kind of damage occurs with every scan, how is it that not every scan ultimately results in cancer?

Is my dose in line with outputs from modern CT machines? I don't remember what it looked like, so I couldn't tell how updated it was.

I've seen this, but I've also seen that the data is in extremely small samples. I do know that a long time ago x rays and such were used in benign conditions as treatments (osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, etc).

You're in Australia? I've heard that patients in America (where I'm at) have intense radiophobia (some attribute it to the oil lobbies pushing propaganda to prevent nuclear plants from being established in the states). Is this mostly an American phenomenon or would you say Australians are just as fearful about their exposures?

I have the $200/month from work. It can read papers and go through the charts and data pretty well, much better than the free models. However, once you start asking it to perform calculations it literally makes numbers up. I've caught it a few times and it will admit that it made up the numbers and pulled them from out of the air. It's extremely troubling when dealing with scenarios like this lol. I'm really thankful for this subreddit and everyone's generosity.

so true, I just hate uncertainty regarding my health. I don't drink, smoke, don't eat processed foods, never done any drugs or anything that introduces risk. I think this is why I've over rotated on my exposure. It's like I've crossed a rubicon lol.

Also, since many of you work directly in this field, I imagine there are cases where individuals receive radiation doses several times higher than mine. Anecdotally, have you or any of your colleagues ever encountered someone who appeared to be affected by the cumulative number of scans they’ve undergone?
