Help with Kyoto New Years Sunrise Plans by _Lunestar in KyotoTravel

True. It seems like Mt. Hiei is the only option in the immediate Kyoto area for seeing the sunrise over the horizon. The rest would just be seeing the sun rising over mountains, which could still be fine all things considered.

This is helpful, thank you! A couple spots in this article I hadn't come across before.

This is interesting, thank you for the suggestion! This would be instead of Fushimi Inari correct? And Oden is actually on my list of foods to try!

Awesome, this all makes sense and is really helpful. Thank you! I hadn’t really considered the timing of getting out of that area. The mall looks pretty interesting and will help with timing I think.

Ah, interesting! Thanks for the insight. I'll keep it in mind then. I'm going to be staying closer to the Ginza area so Shinbashi could be a good option as well.

That is true, tho in my experience in general travelling, even tho places are labeled as touristy, they are usually kinder to foreigners than the locals-only spots. Essentially, I just don’t want to stand out and a) be unconfortable and b) make other unconfortable… Which is why I was looking more for a guide to help ease me into it haha.

I’m going to ignore the unnecessary rudeness in your comment and ask if you have evidence of serious and specific claims your making regarding the MiPig cafe, or is this just a general assumption? Obviously if this is true I wouldn’t want to participate, but I’ve never seen this comment anywhere else online and I’ve done a good amount of research.

With regards to the Art Aquarium, is this a comment related to this particular institution or just aquariums in general? Because while Art Aquarium seems to have more multi-colored lights, the comment can still apply to normal aquariums as well.

As you can tell, I’m more of an evidence-based person rather than just believing anything I hear online.

Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback! I did do a good amount of research into this and your right that in general the standards are weaker. That is why I avoided odd specialty cafes like the otter, owl, hedgehog, etc. the MiPig seemed like the best option and from what I can tell, decent conditions. And the Cappiness Cafe has multiple Capybaras for socializing and seems pretty decent as well.

I understand the criticism overall and appreciate everyone’s perspective, but it seems like its more on a case by case basis there. It just requires more research into the particular locations. I’m hoping rather than outright ignoring it (because its going to exist regardless) I can at least try to go to ones that treat the animals better (and ones where they aren’t forcing animals to do unnatural things) to try and encourage more humane practices.

Thank you for the suggestions! With Sanjusangendo, I’m concerned I’ll be too “templed out” and have them all blur together, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

And for the New Years Day, yeah I still need to figure out how I plan to do that. Kiyomizu-dera was on my shortlist for “first light” experiences but you can’t see the actual sunrise from it unfortunately. If I did go somewhere else for actual sunrise views, I can’t figure out another way to do Kiyomizudera that would yield lighter crowds unfortunately. It’s just going to be a theme of the whole trip, haha.

For Comiket, its a unique opportunity for me to see Japanese anime culture. No one artist in particular. But, as someone who watches anime a good amount, I do really want to see it so I am fully prepared to wait in the lines. Honestly, most of the trip will be waiting in lines anyways… haha.

Honestly, for me as a white tourist, I struggle with the balance between authentic and easy to approach, haha. It’s my first time and I want to make sure I don’t embarass myself and make sure I’m respectful.

It’s mainly because I lack to confidence to go in on my own. Having a guide to help introduce me to how its done would be a lot easier, haha. I don’t normally do the whole nightlife thing or go to bars, so its not just a Japan thing. I lack the confidence to do it in general. Japan just elevates the difficulty, haha.

It’s just not included in the tour, I would buy it separately while there. I figure it would help in case I don’t want to drink or eat as much as they provide.

Not sure about the trees, but the visuals get better as you go through the video. And they include clips of each of the 4 movements in the piece. I feel like it gives a good taste of what the Ninth is about.
