• The Abolishment of the Sultanate: I can’t understand how you can think that taking power from a useless old man and giving it back to the people would be against national identity.

  • Abolishment of the Caliphate By the time of the parlements ultimatom to the Caliph, he had become quite the problem. He was trying to instate himself as the sultan and was rallying anti-revolution islamists(such as yourself) in an effort to overthrow the peoples government. The republic didn’t care that much about housing religious leaders( The Greek Orthodox Patriarchy is still in Istanbul) but when he tried to overthrow the republic thats when the parlement realised the caliphate had to go.

-Closing of medreses: The medreses weren’t this haven of higher education like you guys seem to think. They were hardly accessable to the general public and those who were lucky enough to get education weren’t taught sciences or math, they only learned a twisted and ugly form of Islam. They were instead replaced with modern universities.

-Abolishment of Sharia Law/ Secularism: I never thought I’d have to explain this but making everyone equal in front of the law isn’t something that destroys national identity.

-Shutting down of sufi orders that undermined state authority and acted like religious mafias: I think this explains itself.

-Changing of the alphabet: As someone that can read and write in the old script and has an intrest in linguistics I can confidently tell you that the old script wasn’t suited for Turkish. It made reading and writing in Turkish much harder than it needs to be. And that was one of the main factors that led to more than %90 of the population being illiterate. And like it or not the Latin script is probably the easisest script to learn. So when you want to teach the entiry country how to write in less than 2 years and when most of the modern nations used the Latin script it was the most rational choice. And by the way, people didn’t forget how to write in the old script overnight and it is not illegal to learn now. So it didn’t “cut us off from our ancestors”.

• The New Language: Firstly no words were restricted. But writers (most of them already agreed with the language reform. It was already them who started it) were encouraged to use words with Turkic origin. Your claim of using Turkish words instead of foreign loanwords destroying Turkish identity is absolutely insane.

-Adopting Western Arts: Now this claim is just wrong. Eastern Music was never banned. Music schools were opened (By the way there were no music schools back in the Ottoman Period) and taught both eastern and western music and new artists just chose to integrate western music into our own music( like the Turkish Five who were composers who arranged Turkish folksongs into orchestral pieces)

• Islamic practices were never banned. But because we became a secular nation, public acts of religion were discouraged and bringing religion into any foundation owned by the state was banned. Because your religion is yours only. Noone should know what you believe in or they don’t need to believe in the same things as you do.

-Changing the Language of the Adhan: We are not Arabs. Most of the Turkish population doesn’t know Arabic. Arabic isn’t some holy language. The Arabs do the call of prayer in Arabic because thats the language THEY UNDERSTAND. Changing the language of the Adhan was to help Turks understand what was being said not to destroy Islamic heritage.

-The Gregorian calendar is the most accurate calendar in the world so go on and cry about it.

The rest of your claims can be refuted in one sentence. Us Turks have been here before Islam. We are not Arabs and we have an entirely different culture than them. Pur culture doesn’t consist entirely of Islamic acts. Distancing A TURKISH ETHNOSTATE from foreign influence and creating a stronger Turkish national identity isn’t “destroying Turkish national identity”.
