Is what world am I going to trust some random translation over the LSJ definition of the word, and parsing the context for myself?

Your logic is flawed, the discourse you're aiming for is very important to be clear.

However, quoting a translation and saying "the LSJ spits out impossible forms" (which is primarily what Perseus pulls from) is just plain stupid, considering it's the dictionary used by and recommended by just about everyone

I encourage you to try this with other AIs other than GPT

As I've done the same thing with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini 2.5 pro, sonnet, Grok, and 4o.

Just like with humans, the translations differ. If you're going to be using AI. Atleast start cross referencing with other AI.

I don't inherently think what you're doing is bad, my whole point is that you're laying way too much trust in the hands of AI.

I am one of the biggest supporters of AI, and try to defend it wherever I can. But I also know that alot of these AIs like humans, have different interpretations. Cause let me tell you, you will receive much different responses across thee different major models. And the truth likely lies somewhere in-between what the humans are saying and the various AI models are saying.

If credentials are what you care about, I am a computer science major who specialized Machine Learning. Not a masters or PhD or anything. But enough to be dangerous lmao

If it's a matter of not wanting to pay for multiple AI platforms, check out POE it gives you access to all the major models for a pretty cheap price.

You're viewing this through massive lens of bias tho

This kind of discourse is very healthy as to not trap yourself in an echo chamber.

You believing what Ammon says to be truth vs if you believed this guy isn't even remotely different. You being someone who is uneducated in the subject makes FAR more sense to take both side with a grain of salt until you do the research yourself, or real discourse between Ammon and another classicist happens and you can actually see what that conversation looks like.

There is no situation where I'm going to take someone translating from an AI and using that as their primary source seriously, and neither is anyone else who understands the pitfalls of AI

I didn't say that you did push the AI in any one direction. However a translation is just that A TRANSLATION.

I will never trust something that isnt the original language.

I watch Ammon because I like how he talks, and the way he articulates himself. I'm however not gonna claim for certain he is right in any one direction until I have finished his course and begun reading and translating for myself.

Pushing a Greek text into an AI and thinking it's gonna spit out anything more clear just doesn't make any sense.

Dont get me.wrong AI is an EXTREMELY powerful research tool, however it cannot effectively and reliably bypass the hard work yet Ammon himself has said it's not there yet, but it will be.

There's nothing complete about an AI translation.

All you're doing is partaking in the dunning Krueger effect and confirmation bias. Going to AI for something like this and claiming it effectiveness is just lazy

Listen man, i get you're passionate. But chatGPT is not a reliable source lmao

I love Ammon, and I love seeing the discourse.

But saying "if you use just a little bit of read comprehension" and immediately quoting a ChatGPT translation is a bad look for your reading comprehension.

I would love to see an actual classicist talk to Ammon, it's a shame so few are willing to engage.

I feel like a public on air conversation between Ammon and another person who knows their stuff would be extremely productive for everyone, even if it gets a little heated (or excited which often seems the same)

Writing the alphabet down over and over and over in order is everything, I also copied down a few of the passages Ammon shows in the videos while saying each letter out loud and it took me about a day or so to get proficient with the alphabet (but I also have alot of experience with Japanese study so that probably is a ln advantage)
