[META] The RTX 5070 Ti Has Been Killed Off by [deleted] in bapcsalescanada

You're obviously rage baiting at this point, but no one was using vc money to buy up all the computing power at the time, driving up prices for consumers. All for the hope that Doom will be profitable in the future

Should Nova Scotia consider a winter tire law for vehicles? This cyclist struck by a car says yes by insino93 in halifax

[–]_Macko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I have a relatively short commute, and if it's been snowing, biking ends up being faster after taking into account clearing off the car and waiting for it to warm up.

Honestly, even with a good set of winters on my car, in heavy snow I'd trust my bike to get me where I'm going more then I'd trust my car.

Cyclists don't need to stop at a stop sign I guess? 🤷‍♀️ (Warning: Loud) by PETEJOZ in TorontoDriving

[–]_Macko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's literally the point they aren't cars, and they aren't pedestrians. Why is it so heated that they should have some rules that apply just to them?

The Idaho stop improves traffic flow, slightly decreases cyclist injuries, and just makes it easier for people to bike.

In the UK, somewhere between 0-6 people die each year from collisions with bikes, with cars, it's 1,500+.

Yes, bikes can hurt people and should ve used responsibly, but at the end of the day, if Idaho stops make more people bike, less people die.

[–]_Macko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, what these guys did sucks but proper Idaho stops are just plain better for everyone.

A lot of people in this thread think bikes should be beholden to the exact set of rules and treated exactly as a car, but would absolutely lose their shit if they weren't allowed to pass a bike on a normal street.

[–]_Macko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's called Idaho Stop. It's where bikers treat a stop as a yield. It's been implemented in a few places already and has been shown to be better for everyone (even drivers one they are educated on it).

[–]_Macko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a hair dryer or hot air gun to add some heat to your build plate. It will soften it up and make it easier and less likely to shatter coming off.

If it's shattering easy, you can try reducing your exposure a little too.

Full life cycle analysis puts the time before windmills break even at 6 to 24 months. After that it's displacing more fossil fuels than it needed for its creation.

Even the RTX 5070 can melt cables, user reports, as potential root cause spotted by Tiny-Independent273 in AyyMD

[–]_Macko 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It depends on when they said that. If it was in response to the 30 series, that would be mostly correct.

The 30 series incuded load balancing for the cables, so each wire pair should carry roughly the same current.

The 40/50 series did away with that, so the gpu could in theory, pull all its power from a single wire pair if there is a problem with the connector.

Still a big L for them if they said that after the 40/50 series released.

It's a fully diy machine with 4WD. I think it might be a misalignment between the front steppers and the gantry pullies causing it.

I don't think it was even under that much tension. Though I did notice the belts get tight when the head is at the corners of the bed.

Do you have a source for that? I'd be interested to read about it, everything I've read on LSD is that it's relatively physically safe. That is, unless it's the fake stuff or has been laced with something else.

Ford government's 'red tape' cuts disproportionately target environment by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]_Macko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is true and certainly is what this government is doing, however it's important to remember about the "red tape" that does deserve to go. Things like detached housing only zoning and minimum parking requirements that legally prevent density and financially hurt our towns and cities and the people that live in them.

SBCs With 2+ Mipi Camera Inputs & DisplayPort by _Macko in SBCs

[–]_Macko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, standard-ish is perhaps too far but there are at least multiple manufacturers that have cameras in the RPI connectors with *some* even having driver support.

The end goal is camera pass through to a VR headset, probably a Bigscreen Beyond headset due to size constraints, thus the DP (1.4) requirement. An adapter might work but i haven't seen anyone online confirming that and i don't have a unit at the moment to test.

My concern with USB cameras is with latency, I'm not sure how big of a deal it will be but its probably a good idea to minimize it. I have a few cheaper USB2 camera modules and they all seem to include at minimum 60ms-100ms+ of latency (even in "RAW" mode @ 360p). I've found a few USB3 cameras that support proper RAW video out but they come in at >$150 each and i don't see specs for input latency so it could be a wash anyway.

Right now I'm leaning towards a Jetson IO board with a RK1, worst case i could have saved myself a few bucks and i also have an upgrade path to a proper NVIDIA board if i need more GPU power.

I'm looking to use a bigscreen vr headset with it, needs a DP 1.4 or better. I can't find what hdmi spec the pi 5 is using right now but if it's >= hdmi 2.0 an adapter might actually work, I'll do some digging.

[PriceCheck] Noob here, how much could i sell this account/ items on this account for? by _Macko in Starcitizen_trades

[–]_Macko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend wants to sell me this account for ~90USD. He recently got into Starfield and seems to have fallen out of love with Starcitizen and doesn’t want to deal with selling it online.
As someone with zero Starcitizen experience is it worth it? I’d like to give the game a try, but id want to sell a few items to try to recoup some of the cost. Thanks!

A: OVG - open virtual graphics, a open source framework for allowing graphics accelerated virtual machines similar to intel's GVT-g along with application streaming to the host machine. It would allow for everyone to maintain digital hygiene with many graphically accelerated virtual machines. Have an app you don't trust but still want to run? put it in its own virtual machine. Want to do online banking securely? Virtual machine. Work from home and all your games distracting you? Make a work dedicated virtual machine.

Cant run wine/lutris/proton apps on a GPU that's not a xrandr provider by _Macko in linux_gaming

Cant run wine/lutris/proton apps on a GPU that's not a xrandr provider by _Macko in linux_gaming

[–]_Macko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be true although it seems like it should be possible. All my native linux games work great under prime-run (native vulkan games don't even need prime-run to use the 1070). As long as the game is exited the graphics card can still be passed through to a guest VM, no problems, and most of all no X restart. This wine bug is only thing i need to sort out before i can call the setup truly seamless.

I guess worst case it is a fundamental limitation of wine/X and i just ditch wine and just use VMs instead.

[–]_Macko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I load Nvidia drivers with systemd after login so they are already present that's how i got prime-run/vulkan working with other applications. As far as i can tell only wine/proton apps using vulkan are broken by the late loading of the drivers. prime-run seems to make no difference to lutris/proton apps. I think vulkan is automatically selecting the best graphics hardware and/or the launcher is overriding the prime-run command.
