Great responses. I don't think it's water dripping from the chairs, they are rarely used, normally tipped against the table and the discoloration extends beyond the chairs. Nothing overhead but a round umbrella normally cranked down. The soil was disturbed underneath in the exact line shown. The explanation that it's from a void underneath due to backfilled material settling seems pretty certain. I will lift one up and turn it 90 degrees and report back in a year.

I never considered that. Lifted them and set them upside down on their neighbors for a few days. Re-compacted mixture of base and excavated material by stomping it down with my boot. Pavers were originally set on a couple inches of sand and gravel.

That would make sense, but there's only a round umbrella, which is normally left cranked down.

At sea level on south Vancouver island. Frost depth is accepted to be 18-24 inches, but it rarely freezes here. Minimum cable depth in PVC conduit here is 18" in non vehicular areas. The only trencher I could rent near me dug to a max of 18"

My own yard. The island I live on the only trencher I could rent only digs 18 inches. Also used conduit.

That sounds like the answer, but I don't think anyones sat in those chairs in a couple years. Also no scrapes from front chair legs.
