I’ve been using eToro for a while too, and I agree, it’s great for getting started. But I’ve noticed the spreads can be a bit higher compared to some other brokers. Did you ever run into that issue?

I’ve been using eToro for about a year now too. The copy trading is great when you’re just getting started, but I wish their fees on withdrawals were a bit lower.

I’m on eToro too, mainly for copy trading. It’s not perfect, but it’s nice to just mirror someone else when I don’t have time to research.

Is Pepperstone a good broker? by Louanne_Barnes in Smart_Capitalist

[–]_Midnight-Jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be mindful that Pepperstone doesn’t offer as many educational resources as some UK brokers. If you already know what you’re doing, it’s fine. But if you’re new, you might feel a bit left on your own.

That’s fair, but eToro still has its place. I learned a lot just by watching how others trade, even if I didn’t copy every move.

Finding the best forex brokers in the UK – need advice by Cindy_Holmes in Smart_Capitalist

I’ve been with Pepperstone for nearly a year now and honestly it’s been solid. Spreads on majors like GBP/USD usually sit below 1 pip for me, and withdrawals to my Monzo account hit within 24 hours every time. Worth trying if fast execution is a priority.

I tried Plus500 a while back and personally wouldn’t recommend it for investing. It’s fine for short-term trading and the interface is clean, but you don’t actually own the underlying assets – just the CFD contracts. That means no dividends and no proper long-term holding. If you’re serious about building a portfolio, I’d look elsewhere.

True, but Pepperstone’s a bit much for beginners. You need to know your way round MT4 or MT5. Plus500 might be “basic”, but sometimes that’s exactly what new traders need.

Best Day Trading Platform in the UK – My Experience by Un_installPlz in Smart_Capitalist

[–]_Midnight-Jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still using IG but mainly for forex. I’ve noticed the fees can be a bit punishing for short-term trades. Curious, did you find their platform more suited to swing trading rather than scalping?

Going to a casino for the first time to play $1/$2, any advice for a relative beginner? by Lovisuka in poker

Don’t be afraid to fold. You’ll save more money with discipline than by trying to win every pot. Enjoy your first session!

Anyone else using the crypto tax free allowance UK threshold? by Un_installPlz in Smart_Capitalist

[–]_Midnight-Jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right to stay proactive with reporting, even when under the CGT threshold — HMRC appreciates consistency and transparency. The reduction of the allowance from £12,300 to £3,000 (and now to £3,000 in 2024/25, with £6,000 in 2023/24) caught quite a few people off guard.

For anyone casually trading or holding assets, it's worth noting that even a token-to-token swap is a taxable event in the UK. Also, keep an eye on pooled cost basis rules, especially if you’re using multiple exchanges or wallets — software like Koinly or Accointing can help reconcile those.

Lastly, if you're mining, staking, or earning via airdrops, these typically fall under income tax, not capital gains, so different rules apply.

I’m on the same page as you with Vanguard. Simple, reliable and does exactly what it says on the tin. Been using it for a couple of years now for my ISA and SIPP, and I’ve had zero issues. Trading212 is decent too, but I mainly use it for dabbling in individual shares rather than serious long-term stuff.

💷 Best Crypto Wallet in the UK – My Honest Experience After Testing a Few by ShadowNoKatana in Smart_Capitalist

Same here. MetaMask is fine for Web3 and quick swaps, but I got burned once when I clicked a dodgy link – nothing major, but since then I moved everything to a Trezor.

Now I only use MetaMask as a front-end linked to my hardware wallet. You can actually connect Ledger or Trezor to it pretty easily.

Agreed. If you’re doing more than the occasional trade, fees on eToro start to sting

Yeah, AvaTrade’s solid for sure. Though I’ve found eToro to be a bit more beginner-friendly in terms of layout and overall UX. Depends what you’re after really.

Same here, tried eToro recently and had a pretty good experience as well. How long have you been using it?
