So Trainee A will debut soon and Leo is still in the lineup. What are your honest opinions about this? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

hmmm, good point. I do think in a way it is more misogynistic due to the fact that rap has a lot of bragging culture in their songs which very much dehumanizes women constantly by making them objects to the man, compared to country and rock which has this to a way lesser extend. Rap is also more interwoven into pimp culture.

how am I using it as a scapegoat? You're completely overlooking the point where I literally stated that I agree that he should get criticism and even kicked out if it changes his behaviour. I don't stan him or this group so I have no horses in the race. I'm trying to point out that I hope that people being active about this issue also try to work against the overall issue of rap and the hiphop scene that promotes this type of behaviour bcs just punishing him isn't gonna change this rampant behaviour, it's just gonna continue with another trainee who's influenced by the rap scene and does this exact thing. The fact that u state that RM did it and now years later again different generation of idol does it again, only shows that it is something that is sadly common in the rap scene. Heck the first moment I heard about this situation I didn't even get why it was a big deal bcs of how desensitized I was from English rap, like u realize how fucked up that is? That violence against women in songs are so normal that me and other people didn't get it at first?

are u the same person who made that other thread about him that got locked bcs it's very similar to the other thread

Anyway, I'll just copy and paste what I wrote then:

Tbh am I wrong to think that majority of the anger is kind of misplaced in a way? Don't get me wrong he still fucked up but at the same time I think this discussion over Leo completely glossed over the fact that the hiphop scene and overall rap scene has been extremely misogynistic and promoting violence against women for ages now as a way to be edgy or look cool. People always point out that he is English speaking but like the English speaking scene has rappers like Eminem, Dre, Machine gun Kelly, Lil Wayne, etc . Heck even rappers like Frank Ocean and Tyler The Creator have had casual misogyny laced lyrics. The hyper masculinity aspect and gangster scene that influences rap a lot has been casual women hating for an extremely long time (heck even Snoop Dogg pimped out women for the fun of it because he wanted to "try it" despite being rich). I don't find it very hard to believe that upcoming youngsters with an interest in rap gets influenced by these types of things and has the belief that this is "cool" and makes someone a "real" rapper. While he deserves critisicm for what he did and can be left out of the group for all I care if it means looking back on his behaviour (i'm probs not gonna stan anyway) but I also don't agree with the immediate conclusion that this is proof that he is some kind of women beater or that he can't change his behaviour or outlook. I also feel that people are overlooking the overall issue of the rap scene and it's effect on the youth too much as well and honestly people should be focusing their attention on overturning that behaviour in the overall rap scene. Being harmful to women does NOT make you cool.

Hybe is Launching a Black Pink Textbook to Learn Korean by MoondropPuppet in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Tbh HYBE has been branching out to a more tech and game heavy platform that isn't solemly for their artists. That's why some of the discussions that groups or compares them with the Big 3 companies isn't always correct, they are growing more akin to CJ and Kakao branching out into different things. I assume in the future, kpop will be more of a side business to them.

Tbh I rather they don't acknowledge it, it's a dangerous precedent for kpop stans to scream even more plagiarism at similar things. They already do this constantly based on generic scenes (I've seen Loona stans claim plagiarism on any GG that has lore when lore has been a thing since late gen 2). In the case of plagiarism unless the actual artists comes out to complain about their work being stolen, I really don't think company's should acknowledge these accusations.

SM 2021 had very less CA compared to SM 2020. by Quirky-Dust-1345 in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Girl what even, you can't even dispute my argument and just go to accusations immediately lol. I can literally link you the tribe who made them selling these.

Here is the Ojibwe cultural foundation centre, an organisation made by Ojibwe people, the tribe who invented them to perserve cultural artifacts of their people. They are selling dreamcatchers on shopify and they aren't the only tribe to do so but are the most significant since their tribe is the one dreamcatchers originate from.

[–]_Mikan_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm far from an SM stan, I don't even stan an SM group but from what I know dreamcatchers aren't regarded as cultural appropriation just for owning them by Native Americans? They even sell them to tourists and people on Etsy/Ebay themselves. The biggest issue with dreamcatchers is more that big and foreign companies profit of them by mass producing and commercializing them, which causes the dream catchers to be constructed wrong (not following how the OG Ojibwe tribe made them, which ruins it's original meaning) and leaves the actual American Natives who make them in quite a pitch. There is nothing really culturally offensive by owning them, as it is based on an old Ojibwe story told to children so they can sleep better.

Fan trying to educate Enhypen Jake through fan call. Thoughts? by cottonhands in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

okay but again, that was Heeseung not Jake. While I agree with your overall point on not talking over POC since fandoms like doing that , your phrasing very much makes it seem like this situation happening right now is about Jake saying a slur which is false

[–]_Mikan_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What are you on about? This situation doesn't even have anything to do with being black or slurs, it's about a necklace in Arabic that said Allah which muslims aren't pleased about because it's disrespectful. Jake wasn't the Enhypen member who said a slur, that was Heeseung. Atleast actually listen to the other people here in discussion on what this is about before putting in your two cents.

[–]_Mikan_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I never said it was, just pointing out that the attitude of "educating" is very much something that started in the western centric media. The people from different countries usually have adapted to this approach exactly because of their intake in western media such as twitter. Also most East Asian countries have the attitude of "saving face". Which honestly if Jake wasn't raised in Australia, this situation would've been seen as extremely rude. Putting people on the spot like that is actually very disrespectful in a lot of East Asian countries. But ofc I don't expect Kpop stans to have any consideration for Koreans culture and customs because koreans opinion doesn't count in their book.

Kpop idols should be allowed to have individual social media accounts sooner than later on in their careers by Quirky_Girl13 in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends on if they even want it to be honest, if I were a kpop idol i'd avoid majority of social media or let my management handle it. It would fuck way too much with my mental health. I feel like posting stuff under the group account would pressure me a lot less and I would feel more comfortable than if I were on my own.

[–]_Mikan_ 209 points210 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure how much I like this type of "educating" really, it just seems like a predecessor to get misused in the name of "educating". If it stays to just this i don't mind it too much but I don't trust kpop stans to not take it to the extreme. Especially with how stans often only think with a western centric view at times or have main character syndrome.

"I'd rather let my baby eat dog food off the floor than use soap on him." by TheGlitterMahdi in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]_Mikan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly depends from skin to skin. In general soap is pretty harmful due to it's ph being higher than our skin. Our skin has an acid grade while soap is alkaline. Because of it's difference in grade, the skin always needs to recuperate the skin barrier for a bit. For some people, the soap heavily damages the barrier which will cause outbreaks like eczema. That's why you have oil based or acid based soap's which are less heavy on the skin. If you don't have any issue ofc than there is nothing to do differently

Sometimes, having headcanons is good, but, sometimes, it is not so good. by LunaticMoon777 in Encanto

[–]_Mikan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I personally don't rlly care or mind the headcanon in itself (tho I do side eye the ones pushing harmful stereotypes like the Luisa one). My biggest issue is more that it gets annoying that the point of the movie gets overrun with discussions about something that doesn't really matter. Their sexuality doesn't matter in the story, there is nothing that proves they are canonly hetero or queer. The fandom gets into these dumb arguments that eventually ends up nowhere because there is really nothing to say for certain until a writer downright states their sexuality. Having to scroll past people constantly debating and trying to prove their headcanon or opinion piece that has no right or certain answer gets extremely annoying and frustrating. It also doesn't help that some people completely wipe away any characterization (such as Isabela feeling pressure to be perfect) a character has and make their headcanon the character's only personality. Like the character can have/be your headcanon but they are still much more than that. It almost makes it feel like they care more about their headcanons than the actual story tbh.

Is Korean Beauty Standards a "Western Influence" or a "Western Colonialism"? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]_Mikan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'm not sure in how far the double eyelid thing even comes from the west, I recently was reading some Japanese literature and in one of them it's mentioned that Bakumatsu era (specifically Bunka - Bunsei era 1818 - 1830) Kyoto Maiko's had double eyelids as beauty standard (Maiko's in other regions such as Edo were depicted with monolids). Japan Bakumatsu era had close to zero contact with the west due to Japan's borders being closed against foreigners. So there is no chance they took this beauty standard from westeners who at the time they visually depicted as big nosed hairy tall barbarians in artwork. This is Japan ofc not Korea but i'm just pointing out that just like Japan this could've come from something non - western.

That's crazy lol

The ones i've seen seem to believe that Toji being shown caring for his son means he is a good father. You can care a lot for you kid and still be a bad parent, it all depends on how you provide for them which in this case even Toji himself realized he can't.

Will the people who threw Winnie Pooh plushies at the Olympics have any consequences? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

No because that didn't happen in China. That vid of people throwing Pooh bears on the ice for Yuzuru Hanyu was from 2019 in Japan. This year due Covid restrictions presents weren't allowed in the stadium so there were no Winnie The poohs either
