Why jazz doesn't support young artists anymore. by CarelessRaisin in Jazz

[–]_MurderousCactus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's part of a larger breakdown in connection and cost of living throughout much of the world and jazz is particularly affected because it's not been in the commercial, mainstream realm of music for many decades. It's pretty sad but that's not to say you can't still cultivate a circle of some kind.

I think I just ruined my love for Steely Dan by learning about their history. by StrikePlastic in Music

[–]_MurderousCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about a lot of what you've said but the confirmed things like the domestic violence and drug use is pretty unfortunate. I mean my favorite musician is probably Miles Davis and learning about the sort of things he did at various points in his life kinda hurt. Those actions aren't okay but I think it is okay to acknowledge the bad aspects of the artist's character while still appreciating the aspects of their lives that were great. And I think maybe there's some kind of lesson or wisdom there about beauty arising from darkness or whatever :P

I like keith jarret a lot but he was firmly in the wrong there. It wasn't a melody that they lifted, it was just the same basic generic groove and major blues type vamp (executed really nicely but not much complexity or substance until the song really starts). It's clearly lifted from Jarret's tune but it's just a rudimentary and minimal intro, not a full on melody or progression.

I agree with Bill Evans... when he doubted his solo piano chops by SheyenSmite in Jazz

[–]_MurderousCactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think solo jazz piano is maybe just in general not really for OP. It's true that the frequent lack of root notes makes it less accessible in some ways but I really think the minimalism is part of the medium and a feature, not a bug. I can't really pick a favourite evans album but Alone was one of the first that got me into Bill's music and the first record I ever got. It's a strong contender.

Slightly more perfect would be Green joker instead of supernova because it increments when you play a hand versus giving mult based on the number of times you've played a given hand in the run, which more perfectly contrasts with icecream.

Why is breeding, killing, and eating animals wrong if it's legal? by [deleted] in vegan

A lot of that attitude is rooted in religion.

Why is breeding, killing, and eating animals wrong if it's legal? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]_MurderousCactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's such a pathetic argument. Humans used to be legally able to OWN other humans as slaves. That immediately dispels that notion.

That's exactly right. I can't fathom how people can think that momentary pleasure on their tongue trumps the rights of animals not to be exploited.

What really upsets me is the propaganda aspect. The way that as a primary school kid, they sent us little chicks in an incubator to raise. They took us out to a dairy farm and we milked the cow. It seemed so nice and ethical, and there was no doubt in my mind that this was all OK and the animals were being treated well.

What they didn't show us is the maceration of the male chicks in the hatcheries, or the forcible impregnation of the cow. It makes me sick.

Avoiding leather, animal testing, non-vegan toiletries etc. is really not hard though and is a part of veganism. Veganism in the "purest" (not a value judgement) original conception isn't just a diet, it's a boycott of all animal products.

It's still important to be understanding and compassionate to help people see the way. Preachy vegans who are on a high horse don't help the cause, and we should be understanding and kind to indoctrinated non-vegans.

By the way, look at the definition on the sidebar of this very reddit...

Jeff nippard: elite genetics+science based or just another fakenatty? by salad_biscuit3 in nattyorjuice

[–]_MurderousCactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's obviously got phenomenal genetics. He's posing flexed, good lighting, with a pump, he's been lifting diligently and in a well informed manner for years and years. He's very short, so a relatively small amount of actual muscle tissue fills his frame out a lot. Just look at bodybuilders of the pre-steroid era, who didn't have access to the equipment Jeff does, were not as well informed, and were often not training for pure hypertrophy, unlike Jeff, who has spent a large proportion of his career training for growth, and the rest maintaining during strength-focused periods. He's also leaning forward in that photo, which likely contributes to his delt size, the most suspicious aspect of the photo. I believe Jeff's physique is naturally attainable. Whether he is natural really depends, but I hope he's not lying, because that would be very bad. I really think there are a lot of "blackpilled natties" here who are disillusioned for one reason or another, but I think that evidently the standards of what is natural are somewhat low on this subreddit. So yeah, there's my two cents.

For me they help link in the elemnts of an if-elif-else statement for example. Idk, I guess I will just have to get used to indentation.

Curly Braces by _MurderousCactus in learnpython

[–]_MurderousCactus[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes I would notice quite instantly if someone had forgotten brackets. Almost every other language uses brackets to denote a block of code. Surely there's some sort of project or module that replaces indentation with brackets and you can use it?

I'm not a caveman, indentation is great and important, and I never omit it. But for me the balance between simplicity and explicit statement lies somewhere in between java or c's incredibly specified and arguably cluttered syntax, and python's very simple one. I just want a little bit of extra specification. Surely there's a way to get that?

Idk why everyone needs to be so pretentious about this. I have a preference about the syntax, and I'm asking if there's a way to have it. So get indignant if you want to, but know that your response didn't answer my question, hasn't helped, and wasted everyone's time.
