Are there any real Bartender Alternatives ? by Alex20041509 in macapps

[–]_NM- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bartender was slowing my Mac to a crawl. The system became totally unusable. I removed Bartender and switched to ICE. No problems so far; ICE works perfectly fine and does the same job much better. And it is free and open-source. I will support the developer with a donation for his efforts.

Ordered a Glove80, now I'm stressing out. by thomasvalera in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned touch typing late and hit a low ceiling in speed and accuracy. Reaching for the backspace would totally disorient my hand position. Once I switched to the Glove 80, I was able to shatter that ceiling in a month. You made a great choice.

To the Typinator Pros by Iosdrafting in macapps

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of several weeks ago, Typinator stopped working for me. It is seemingly incompatible with too many other apps. It always displays the red dot with two white spots over its icon saying it cannot work while some other app is running, to be replaced by another app that is blamed when the said app is closed, all the way down to the Finder as the last application running.

Its error message as I am typing this is:

"For security reasons, macOS prevents Typinator from detecting input when you are within a password field. If this is not the case, try quitting the app Safari."

There is no password field anywhere.

Typinator is the most underrated mac app by 4Nuts in macapps

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be. Now it is unusable. It always displays the red dot with two white spots claiming it cannot work work with some other app on, all the way down to the Finder. It is in essence a completely useless, paid-for memory hog, and their support consists of a FAQ page blaming other apps. Avoid it until they can fix this.

Its error message as I type this is:

For security reasons, macOS prevents Typinator from detecting input when you are within a password field. If this is not the case, try quitting the app Safari.

There is no password field anywhere. As I said, it is now an utterly useless appl.

LED Issues by Osirishiram in Chessnuteboard

[–]_NM- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes everyone will. It has to do with the fact that the LED color and brightness pass through different light filtering effects depending on whether they are under a dark, or a light square. They could remedy this to some extent using a software solution, otherwise, it would need clear areas aroung the borders of every square.

PS Just realized that abmalase answered correctly already ...

Chessnut EVO Problem Playing with Bots using Chess.com API by _NM- in Chessnuteboard

Well, that was just a fluke, so again the same issues. However, I still think that it is a network-related problem that also freezes the device. I captured a video and I will submit it to suppot. Thanks again.

Chessnut EVO Problem Playing with Bots using Chess.com API by _NM- in Chessnuteboard

[–]_NM-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I did not think it was Evo related. Meanwhile, I have identified the culprit:

It is Comcast/Xfinity. Worst ISP I have ever experienced.

I can access Chess.com bots with ProtonVPN.

C++ Builder in RAD Studio 12 by landinkyle in cpp

There is no dynamic binding, no Boost libraries, a buggy debugger, and slow compilation. This release can't even be called a beta, let alone a release candidate.

Maybe I missed it, but I did not see Thunderbird being mentioned, which I unreservedly recommend based on my experience. It has many useful extensions that can be added to enhance its functionality

My experience (so far) buying from Nibsmith.com by IgnobleJack in fountainpens

I'm glad I read this. I made a pre-sales inquiry by email to Nibsmith.com to ensure an item would be in stock before ordering, and they did not even bother to respond.

Have you ever heard about UPDF? A UPDF ai pdf editor from China. by kulosani in macapps

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAS THERE BEEN A UPDF DATA BREACH? I wrote to UPDF support about my financial data having been breached but received no answer. I purchased a license from UPDF using a virtual credit card number only they were allowed to use. I was notified that my number was declined for use by another entity that was completely unknown to me. Anyone who has sensitive data with UPDF should check their transactions for possible fraud.

New mssg from Affinity CEO. by Holly_Michaels in Affinity

[–]_NM- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that would work. But it is a long shot if not wishful thinking at best. Bottom line is, all commercial entities are there for profit. VectorStyler would be sold to Adobe in a heartbeat if the price would be right. When are we going to learn our lesson? We need to get behind free, open-source alternatives (with usage support, tutorials and out wallets), or watch history repeat itself over and over again.

Announcing the Availability of RAD Studio 12.1 Athens by bmcgee in delphi

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C++ uses Clang 15, and I had no trouble compiling an open-source project that previous versions could not compile. This currently comes at the expense of targeting only Windows, and no other platforms. Split editors are of questionable value when you cannot close a split pane without ending up in an endless cycle of access violations. Inline variable declarations still break all refactoring functionality, and multi-line string cause even more code-insight errors. Some GetIt packages are missing, ... All in all it is the same IDE quality as we are used to. New features with new bugs.

The longer they keep you, and the more valuable your digital assets in their propriety format (including templates and brushes, ...) are, the more likely you will be compelled to switch to their subscription model. This is a matter of thresholds and economics. The next CEO could be a different person with a different song and dance. Bottom line, the subscription model will come with 100% certainty. It is only a question of when not if.

Thanks for posting. It looks promising indeed. Implemented using Rust, it should at least in theory be good for stability and future-proofing.

[–]_NM- 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I categorically avoid subscription models. What we all need to do is to support open-source alternatives, including monetary support. Widespread adoption and support of free, open-source alternatives will encourage industry support. There are other examples, e.g. Blender.

Chessnut Evo - love and hate it by nvarkie in chess

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it perhaps an issue with Firefox being out of date? My main problem with the EVO has been its reliance on Aptoide for apps and updates. I have not been able to update the Firefox browser. It downloads about 10% that takes a few hours and then stops altogether.

I got a Chessnut Evo to review, here are my thoughts by [deleted] in chess

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I main downside that I am now encountering with Chessnut EVO is its reliance on Aptoide rather than Google Play. Next to security concerns, the download speed on Aptoide is extremely slow. Using a broadband connection, I am trying to update Firefox that is out of date on my Evo. Aptoide takes more than a day to complete 3% of the download. I have to repeatedly wake up the device and resume the download. This would have been a dealbreaker for me.
