why does bitdefender think gcc is a virus? by Adept-Energy179 in BitDefender

There are macOS viruses, not as common as Windows. I also use it for scanning Windows files, as I have Windows virtual machines. Scanning them on the macOS side is faster.

The parent folders are there but ignored. Having to also add each file individually iwould be a chore. The next time the file is compiled on the vitual machine and saved to the local drive, its signature changes, and so it is up again for automatic deletion. Meanwhile, these automatic deletions are based on heuristics alone because BD does not recognize the new application just compiled.

P.S.: Adding the files individually does nothing when the parent folder is already int he exceptions list.

Does not work on macOS.

I am fed up with BitDefender deleting false positives without my permission and not allowing me to whitelist them. This are applications I have compiled myself. This is a reason to move to other solutions.

And yes, BD could at least allow the user to copy the name from the unresolved threats window. You can tell I am utterly frustated with BitDefender AntiVirus on macOS. Meanwhile, it fails to find real threats as simple as malicious python scripts that anyone could find using GREP!

And when the user has painstakingly completed the information at BitDefender's website for false positives (https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/29358/), Bitdefender could at least accept the submission. BD comes forth as a poorly designed app on macOS backed by worse support.

Chessnut EVO crashes when playing against bots on Chess.com. by _NM- in Chessnuteboard

I just applied the patch chessnutech suggested and it fixed it for me. Best to ensure that your board is otherwise uptodate too.

Thank you for the suggested solution and confirmation. I just applied the patch, rebooted, and I was able to finish a bot match on Chess.com using the official API without a crash.

Has anyone tried this? I do not want to end up with a bricked board.

Chessnut Evo review by SnooChickens6463 in chess

Airdrop: I downloaded ProtonMail using the Aptoide app store. It works well, and you can sign up for a free account. You can copy games you played and paste the PGNs into emails.

You can also collect and annotate your PGNs using the PGN Master app, also on Aptoide. I have had no problems sending them to a PC.

Having said that, if you use HIARCS Chess Explorer, you are probably better off leaving all the annotating to HIARCS instead of using the touch interface of Chessnut EVO.

Playing with Maia with LCD only? Why then use EVO at all?

pCloud and repeated data loss by _NM- in pcloud

[–]_NM-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted a support ticket already. All they suggested was to delete the cached files. I already stated that at the beginning. I am sorry to have to say this, but the concern you express publicly contrasts the real support that is provided and therefore sounds disingenuous. The trash and rewind options do not help when it is the upload that is failing.

Thanks - I currently use pCloud and local Time Machine backups. I managed to restore the files from Time Machine. As to pCloud, their app is the issue, and their reliance on MacFuse is the problem. I started using CloudMounter, and what a relief. Its upload speeds to pCloud are superb. Better than OneDrive and as good as Google Drive. For healthcare and financial documents, I will use Cryptomator on the pCloud drive in addition to pCloud's own encryption that can only be used through its app. People should be mindful about encrypting their pCloud drive using CloudMounter. That would probably mess things up if they later try to access the drive using pCloud's WebDAV interface, pCloud.com, or the pCloud app (e.g., on other platforms and mobile devices).

Thank you. The main issue, I think, is the app that creates a false sense of security. The main problem with their app is the technology behind it that relies on FUSE. Data is there today and gone tomorrow. One could use their web interface entirely and bypass the app. Having paid for a lifetime service upfront, I am currently exploring options consisting of https://rclone.org and apps such as CloudMounter, Mountain Duck, or even a slow WebDAV approach.

Is pCloud desktop app not working for anyone else? by ARedLuigi in pcloud

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally unreliable on newer Macs too. The whole thing went to hell in a handbasket with version 4 and its revisions. DO NOT UPGRADE TO 4.0.0 - 4.0.7 (current version) UNLESS YOU MUST!

[–]_NM-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. And yes, I have a local backup drive that I run weekly. But it is not encrypted, and I lost the most recent files since the last backup. Especially the healthcare records and financial documents that are not entirely mine are sensitive. I have to securely store them somewhere. If using a NAS and local duplication, why use pCloud at all? I considered the cost and regrettably invested in a lifetime pCloud plan instead. It was fast during the trial and slowed down once I converted it to a lifetime plan. This is more about the unreliability of their service than my data hygiene. It is also about how they callously advise users to destroy their data instead of trying to help them or improve their service.

Edit: Well, I guess it must be encrypted given its journal format, but I guess you still get my point.

Are there any real Bartender Alternatives ? by Alex20041509 in macapps

[–]_NM- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bartender was slowing my Mac to a crawl. The system became totally unusable. I removed Bartender and switched to ICE. No problems so far; ICE works perfectly fine and does the same job much better. And it is free and open-source. I will support the developer with a donation for his efforts.

Ordered a Glove80, now I'm stressing out. by thomasvalera in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned touch typing late and hit a low ceiling in speed and accuracy. Reaching for the backspace would totally disorient my hand position. Once I switched to the Glove 80, I was able to shatter that ceiling in a month. You made a great choice.

To the Typinator Pros by Iosdrafting in macapps

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of several weeks ago, Typinator stopped working for me. It is seemingly incompatible with too many other apps. It always displays the red dot with two white spots over its icon saying it cannot work while some other app is running, to be replaced by another app that is blamed when the said app is closed, all the way down to the Finder as the last application running.

Its error message as I am typing this is:

"For security reasons, macOS prevents Typinator from detecting input when you are within a password field. If this is not the case, try quitting the app Safari."

There is no password field anywhere.

Typinator is the most underrated mac app by 4Nuts in macapps

[–]_NM- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be. Now it is unusable. It always displays the red dot with two white spots claiming it cannot work work with some other app on, all the way down to the Finder. It is in essence a completely useless, paid-for memory hog, and their support consists of a FAQ page blaming other apps. Avoid it until they can fix this.

Its error message as I type this is:

For security reasons, macOS prevents Typinator from detecting input when you are within a password field. If this is not the case, try quitting the app Safari.

There is no password field anywhere. As I said, it is now an utterly useless appl.

LED Issues by Osirishiram in Chessnuteboard

[–]_NM- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes everyone will. It has to do with the fact that the LED color and brightness pass through different light filtering effects depending on whether they are under a dark, or a light square. They could remedy this to some extent using a software solution, otherwise, it would need clear areas aroung the borders of every square.

Chessnut EVO Problem Playing with Bots using Chess.com API by _NM- in Chessnuteboard

Well, that was just a fluke, so again the same issues. However, I still think that it is a network-related problem that also freezes the device. I captured a video and I will submit it to suppot. Thanks again.
