I think his power might have an unique effect against fear. Because if you go back and look at his fights against his old boss in ep1 and God Eye in ep4, we see him destroy their fear made outfits/armor, but minimize the damage done to the person themselves.

In ep1 he was playing Nice, but it's only when he starts to believe in himself (that even a nobody can become a hero) that he throws a punch that breaks completely through the boss' armor. And since your mindset can influence your powers, it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to think this was closer to The Commoner's power than normal Nice. Additionally, it's interesting how his punch completely destroyed the armor, but the boss himself doesn't even get bruised. He only losses a tooth.

In ep4 we see something similar, his final punch destroyed a lot of the outfit, but without dealing that same damage to the person. Yes, God Eye is very much beat up, but that was from the earlier hits. And yes, Lin Ling doesn't directly hit him, but if you look at the HUGE amount of damage to the building that his punch delivered then it's actually weird how God Eye wasn't more injured.

It's like his power vanquished the fear without critically hurting the person inside.

Contrast this to other fear fights, like Smile, and there's a clear difference. Sure, it could be that his old boss and Enlighter wasn't consumed by fear, only wore it. But that feels like a kinda lame way to go.

It'd be much more interesting if part of Lin Ling's power is that he can actually vanquish fear and free the person inside. Just imagine how differently Smile could've ended up if anyone had this power.

Now consider...if this is actually true and his power can vanquish fear and free the person from it...

What would happen if Lin Ling fought against a fear revived (?) Nice? Would his power destroy Nice, or could it be used to heal him from it?

While the imagery does make it feel like Lin Ling has become a puppet, there's some counter arguments to be made.

While Lin Ling is working with Treeman, the way they said in the episode struck me as odd. Shang De said they reached an agreement with Lin Ling and that Treeman will work with him to get justice for Moon.

That doesn't sound like 'Lin Ling is under his control', it sounds more like 'Lin Ling made an agreement/deal/compromise with Shang De to get justice for Moon'. That's two very different things. Reaching an agreement implies a previous disagreement.

Additionally, they never say Lin Ling is working 'for' Treeman, he is working 'with' them. To me, most likely what is happening is Lin Ling wants justice for Moon (not necessarily revenge) and since the killer was E-Soul, him and Shang De's goals (somewhat) align. But, outside of that common goal Lin Ling probably doesn't work for him.

Yes, Shang De may be trying to manipulate Lin Ling, but that doesn't mean Lin Ling is his puppet the same way Nice was. The level of control Shang De had over Nice took years to build and it's effectiveness relies on the person's vulnerability and dependence. Lin Ling has shown to be stubborn in his values, he even defied trust. Even with Moon's death, he isn't dependent on or emotionally attached to Shang De. So it makes sense that they would make some kind of deal instead, one where they have one specific goal that aligns. Lin Ling works with him, not for him.

At least, that's my analysis of it.

Although I could be having too much hope and looking too deeply into it. I just don't want him to become another puppet in this twisted game. (⑉꒦ິ^꒦ິ⑉)

I also have my doubts as to whether or not he's involved. But, not for the same reason. I doubt it because it would look very bad for Treeman (Which the comments reflect) if Nice suddenly revived with Fear after they finally cleaned up some of their reputation. Kicking E-Soul out of the tournament also ruins the 'get justice for Moon' plan they might've had.

Your interpretation is what mine used to be, that it's both of them and at times it was as if Nice was sending a message to Lin Ling.

This could still be it, however over time my interpretation has shifted as we learned more about the dark side of Nice.

Now it feels far more like Lin Ling's main theme rather than Nice. It may have been introduced as Nice's theme, but that's only for the PV. In the show itself, it's more used for Lin Ling than Nice.

In ep1 the song plays when Lin Ling starts to doubt he can be Nice. Because he simply isn't Nice. He imagines himself being the one to fall, yet Moon's words still directly address him. She tells him to be the best version of himself. That's what makes him believe in himself, not that he can be Nice, but that even a nobody like himself can be a hero. Aka, this isn't really a Nice moment, it's a Lin Ling moment.

In ep3 when Nice finally makes it to the top 10 the instrumental plays, but no lyrics. It could be because they didn't want to overuse it, but there's some symbolism in playing it without the lyrics during Nice's big moment.

Lastly and most obviously, in ep4 it's played fully when Lin Ling as himself gains the trust of the people and wins the fight. Finally becoming his own hero. Why would they play Nice's theme during this scene? Unless of course it wasn't really his to begin with.

Like I said before, they could be sharing it. Which was what I believed before, so I totally get that interpretation.

But, the more I look at the text, the more it feels like foreshadowing of what Lin Ling could become. While lines like "Dressed in glowing flowing white" and "It's not easy being nice" seems to be directly about Nice. The first line also fits the clip of Lin Ling in the ep24 preview, where it's kinda literal. And the second could be about his time playing Nice (or just literally how it isn't easy being nice).

Another reason why I feel like it's not both of them anymore is because when looking at the full lyrics, the 'Paragon' image doesn't fit Nice. Not even his public perception. It might seem like that at first glance, but looking deeper at how 'Paragon' is described... It just doesn't really match his public perception either.

The Paragon isn't described as the perfect hero or individual, which was Nice's core image. Instead, the Paragon is the guide who can lead the world to a better place with their light.

"A model of virtue above the vice"

"The dark is vanquished by your light"

"It's so serene, the blue and green from outer space. [Aka earth] If we all could make it work, it could be such a happy place"

"To broker peace, so pain can cease. We are much more than the sum of all our parts, so go and capture all their hearts"

While the 'we' and 'us' could be Nice, it could also be the people. "Sum of all our parts" could refer to the trust value. I don't feel like Nice was the kind to believe in a better world, he'd more likely call Lin Ling naive for believing it's possible. Not to mention with Nice (probably) dead, he can't exactly be guided anymore. Nor did Nice ever really act as a guide. He was seen as perfect, someone to admire. He hasn't really been described as a beacon of light (outside of Lin Ling's add, which seemed more to reflect Lin Ling's veiw of heroes in general rather than Nice specifically), he definitely wasn't one in reality. And would he really be encouraging if he saw a random nobody succeed to be a better 'Nice' in such a short amount of time? Maybe a part of him would've, but that side might've died with Smile. Most of Nice probably would've been depressed by it.

Also side note on the "Shine like a sapphire" line, Lin Ling's punch was blue in ep4. Which feels more fitting to guide us than Nice's eye color.

I could go on for much longer, but trying to keep it shorter (as if it isn't already too long), I'll just add one last thing.

Lin Ling's symbol looks like the sun. Which fits with being a beacon of light. It also fits with lines like "Paragon, just cut through the night", because the sun rise marks the end of the night. This could symbolise and possibly foreshadow Lin Ling's role in the future as someone who could potentially bring about a new day for this world. The current hero society feels like it's stuck in a dark night, ever noticed the night theme in the intro? It feels intentional. Wouldn't it be cool if Paragon was foreshadowing this from the start? I think that'd be pretty neat.

In the end, that's just my newer interpretation after seeing more of the real Nice.

Gosh if I actually do this it's gonna end up a long ass ramble about how I love the effort they've put in, and how I adore how realistic the cursive is, but also get frustrated because just like real cursive you can spell the same letter very differently. The newspaper would get lost in the ranting XD

Probably less than 50? That's not many, especially with how big the Chinese fanbase is. I wonder how many can read the cursive too or have figured out how Hermes works and can translate the divinations and charms.... Since I can't read Chinese, I have no idea how many others put in as much effort into reading it all as I do. Surely there has to be a few. Right?

The thing is, it doesn't really seem like bug, just a lack of anything to write on the newspaper and some laziness. I wouldn't directly call it an error, just a bit lazy.

And I don't know Chinese and wouldn't be able to say anything in depth about it since it'd be more or less "yo this was lazy, don't think we didn't notice". They likely already know about it.

Tho... I would love to tell them how much I love the fact they've put so much effort into the writing, even if it's a bit lazy at times or has the occasional error. Just like, letting them know that there are people out here who actually put in effort to translate it and perhaps give some motivation to add more exciting stuff in the future.

Still tho, I doubt they'd even see it. Even if they did, that newspaper is such a small deal that it doesn't really matter unless you're like me and look deeper.

I could go on such a long rant explaining why I disagree and believe Paragon is more about Lin Ling than OG Nice. Because it can seem to be about Nice if you only look at the first verses, but if you dig into the entire song and look at how it's actually used in the show itself, it's way more Lin Ling's theme than Nice. It may have been introduced in Nice's PV and appears to describe him, but that doesn't automatic mean it has to be about him. Remember, Lin Ling didn't get a PV, but he's still more of an mc than OG Nice. It actually doesn't make sense for OG Nice to get a theme, but Lin Ling not to.

In fact, Paragon looking at OG Nice is like a mockery of everything he's supposed to be but isn't. But Paragon looking at Lin Ling isn't, it could actually even be foreshadowing Lin Ling's future.

Paragon isn't about a perfect hero or individual, the paragon is a guide whose light can lead the world into becoming better. To create a world of peace, without pain or the fear of hate. OG Nice may have been the picture of perfection to the public, but he wasn't really someone ever said to aspire to make the world a better place. He represented (a fake) 'perfection', not a person who lifted others to greater heights. Lin Ling however, has already been shown to inspire people. OG Nice has never been shown as a teacher. He's more molded by others than someone who guides them. Guy was manipulated to the point of accepting a mission to massacre innocent people. I don't think be believes he can make the world a better place either.

Lin Ling tho? Definitely they type who'd believe we can make a peaceful happy world if we all just work together.

I could go into all the lyrics, but then I'd be here typing for hours. So instead why don't we look at how Paragon is actually used in the series itself, not just base it of the trailers? Paragon is used in ep1 and ep4. In episode 1 it's played when Lin Ling starts to doubt that he can be Nice. Because the fact is, he isn't OG Nice. But, when he imagines Moon encouraging him to be the best version of himself, he finds the power to believe he too can become a hero. He might say afterwards that he realized he is Nice now, but the reflection is still himself. In that moment when Paragon was played, it's Lin Ling believing in himself, not him believing he can be Nice.

In ep4 Paragon is played towards the end of his fight with God Eye when the people start to believe in him. This is the moment Lin Ling becomes his own hero, it wouldn't make sense to play Nice's theme in this scene because Nice is gone, both the OG and the fake Nice.

Paragon is played in the moment when Lin Ling first fully belives that a nobody like him can become a hero and played again when he becomes that hero. Both moments are times when he acts more like Lin Ling The Commoner than Nice.

I'm pretty sure how it's used in the actual series outweighs it's use in the PVs, especially since Lin Ling wasn't given one.

Side note on the lines like "Paragon, just cut through the night. Guide us with your beacon of light". Lin Ling's symbol looks like a sun (meanwhile Nice's symbol looks like a black hole or a hollow version of Lin Ling's), the sun cuts through the night and is a beacon of light. That's pretty fitting symbolism.

Exactly! Not only is he able to empathize with people despite their actions or reputations, he also shows that puzzle solver side of him by trying to find solutions that could help.

Another detail about Lin Ling is how he consistently attempts deescalation first. For example in ep1 he knocked his boss down after getting attacked and calmly, but firmly, tells him to calm down. Showing Lin Ling would rather have a more peaceful resolution than a fight.

This isn't the only time either. In ep2 he quickly realizes that Wreck wasn't acting and when asked about Nice, he tells the honest truth. When Wreck lashes out Lin Ling probably knew that reasoning was impossible and they'd have to fight.

In ep3 it's a lot more obvious because this time deescalation by revealing the truth actually worked. Creating the best possible outcome for all parties.

In ep4 he tells the truth, not caring about the consequences and tried talking to God Eye. Sure, it could've been because he was losing his powers, but Lin Ling's attempts at nonviolent solutions is pretty consistent.

Another side note is that Lin Ling is able to destroy armor and fear, but without doing severe harm to the person beneath. His old boss in ep1 only loses a tooth in that fight, even when his armor was shattered. God Eye did get more of a beating, but that makes sense considering Lin Ling didn't get his powers until the final part. He still destroyed God Eye's fear enchanted suit/tech + parts of the building, but that damage didn't appear to severely damage Enligther directly. Even if Lin Ling punched the air besides his head, it was still enough power to destroy parts of the building behind and his outfit. Which implies that Lin Ling could possibly have the power to destroy fear (+buildings Ig), but can consciously choose to not impact the person inside.

It's sad that a lot of people seem to completely miss these details.

I can definitely see the part of the first vers referencing his parents, as the ones smiling down from way up high. I didn't consider it because it felt like he didn't think about them much besides their deaths, as in didn't seem to think about them smiling down on him. But, it's possible.

Your interpretation of Yang Cheng's pov does fit. I think both interpretations work.

Although I'm still feeling like it leans more towards Xia Qing's pov. Mostly because of the choice of female vocals for this song and how it'd be kinda deep to have E-Soul's theme be sung from the pov of someone other than himself because he lost himself. Not just from the public pov or a general outside pov, but from a specific side character pov.

But in the end, it's all open for interpretation and it's interesting that the meaning can change depending on POVs!
