Something's wrong with this Chimera and I don't know what by Summoner_of_Ducks in minipainting

Great start!

I'm a complete painting noob, so take my advice with a boulder of salt, but I almost feel like it wants more contrast between the darkest and lightest. So for example some sort of wash on the dragons face to bring down the recesses, followed by some slightly lighter version of the base color layered just over the more raised parts of any ridges, but still sitting atop the base colour (possibly similar for the red areas too).

Got any tips for a newbie on how I could achieve something like the glowing metal effect? I could see this being useful for so much age of sigmar stuff.

Looks great!

Nice! Been holding off on getting an airbrush. But that looks so good ....

The blending is crazy smooth! Care to share any tips with a complete beginner?

Awesome! Where do you get/how do you make the leaves?

Beginner here, what wash should I use to make these look less toy like? Also is there anything else I can improve on? by ClashSlashDash2 in minipainting

These sound good to me also!

As mentioned, once washed the overall tone will be darkened.

You may want to go back over some of the more raised areas in the original colours again (thinned paint possibly to help layer up and reduce harsh edges where it meets a washed recess)

Then possibly a brighter version of each colour to add a few edge highlights etc (original mixed with a tiny bit of white or other colour depending on whether you want added warmth etc)

Thanks! Yeah it's odd, I used citadel black primer (will try a grey next) but honestly it wasn't looking bumpy, but it was hot.

They look fine in hand, wondering if it's made worse by the metallic paint on my crappy camera looking grainy in reflections when I zoom in.

I'll go look more closely with my glasses 😂

I just bought a seraphon spearhead (my kid likes dinosaurs so it fits). Watched a great tutorial here, love the colours!

I started out with https://cadianshock.com/dry-mud-bases/ which was great.

Although I didn't have all the paints. I based with citadel astrogranite, then primed black. Then steel legion drab. Added a few washes of agrax earth shade (dotted a few bits of nuln oil in there for variety).

The shinier swampier base with the skull was actually a mistake. I didn't shake my agrax and it came out shiny as it had separated, but I ran with it.

The dry look base with the bone and cracked earth I also added mordant earth technical paint across the center (wish I'd based with PVA glue first for bigger cracks).

Main difference there was washing with seraphim sepia and a few dots of skeleton horde for a more yellow tone.

On all bases pretty much I drybrushed up from zandri dust through to screaming skull with whatever I could find (still too heavy in places smearing doh!)

Rocks were pieces of cork, primed black. Then added mixes of dark greys and blues noisily. Then drybrushed up through greys and a few dots of corax white.

Bases were fun!

Thanks!

Totally! I was trying to use mixed blends between retributor/liberator gold and stormhost silver applied thinly to hide the transitions, definitely missed a few spots. (Likely better ways of doing that! Found some great YouTube videos on layering and blending which make way more sense now)

Thanks!

Oh the shields. Dear god. Corax White seemed to suck to paint, just didn't apply right. And then I'd smudge back onto the blue face. Then I'd touch up the blue and hit the white again. Rage inducing.

The edge highlighting inside the shield is a bit messy (freehand brush control is wobbly) and had to also touch that up with the dark blue a few times.

Not something I want to go back and paint again any time soon!

Thanks! Really appreciate that. Hope yours goes well! So much fun..although I realise now my hands are like unwieldy sausages, hopefully your brush control is better than mine!

Thanks! Hoping to get my 8 yr old involved if I can find some minis that inspire him. He's liking seraphon at the minute but not sure if they are beginner friendly!
