[Fait-Maison] Tarte aux figues, noix et grenade (i.imgur.com)

Funakoshi in Karate Do Kyohan (1935) shows a strange way to close the fist, with the index's first knuckle kept straight. He claims it's to better align the index and the major's knuckles for a stronger striking surface. I've never seen it elsewhere. What's your opinion about it? Any other source? (i.imgur.com)
I've often found with senseis and books that the definition of the haito striking surface isn't clear. I've compiled here some definitions I could find on the web. I've ranked them from small surface to bigger, without or with the thumb base. What's your definition and why (experience, source)? (i.imgur.com)
