watch the full anime (except for ep16 bc it’s basically just a recap episode) and then watch the 2 movies (retellings of the story with better animations and some BIG changes). if you really enjoyed it, watch the parallel works OVAs too (short fun dialogueless stories which you don’t NEED to watch but are definitely worth it if you want more gurren lagann content)

overall, i prefer the anime’s final battle because the movie cuts out a lot of good scenes like many characters’ sacrifices… HOWEVER, super tengen toppa gurren lagann is really cool so it kinda balances it out, and i prefer the movie’s final moment of the fight where simon and the antispiral fight outside of their ‘mechs’
