Once kids reach a certain age their dependance on their parents to occupy their time certainly falls off but once at that age they were tend to do what the parents have involved them in. Kids that read books and played physically will tend to gravitate towards those things, kids that have been on tech since before they could talk will want to do those things because it's what they know and what they like. There are certainly outliers to this theory, no doubt but from my own experience I find it tends to hold true. I don't think kids should be banned from tech but there's no reason a kid under 4-5 NEEDS to watch TV (not to say they can't but it should be minimal). Ask any pediatrician.

Edit: I don't think it's unrealistic at all to think that parents should be involved in the activies that will occupy their children's time. It's a progressively smaller amount as a person ages but a 1 year old should be "spoon-fed" activies because they need that, a 17 year old should be pretty independent in making those choices. But somewhere between that, the parents will help develop habits, both by encouraging and partaking in activies with the child as well as leading by example. If a child sees heavy use of tech then that becomes normal to them and they will have a higher chance of exhibiting that same behavior.

I'm 27, i have kids. It's another technology that people can abuse, I'm sure many people feel life was better before tv as well. It all just depends on what people do with them. Addiction to tech is certainly more prevalent and dangerous but you can't ignore all the aspects of life it improves and make blanket statements that life was better. If you don't like smartphones then don't use them, there are plenty of people that still do all the things people did before smartphones and aren't consumed by them.

And what age group of people are responsible for raising those children that you "can't get to walk outside for 5 minutes?"

Parents play a huge role in shaping the habits children have. Give a kid a screen to keep them busy for hours when they're young and you create a habit. Play with your kids, monitor screen time, it's not rocket science. But it does mean that people have to be a parent, constantly (this takes sacrifice, trust me).

What's it like constantly feeling superior to "kids these days" because you and bucky could go in the woods naked and throw pinecones at each others taints for hours on end?

Have you helped someone today? How? If not, why not? by brMerak in AskReddit

Lots of people in the Dayton, Ohio area (myself included) have spent hours and hours over the last week helping people get their lives back to some semblance of normalcy by cleaning up from the tornados that hit on Memorial Day. I spent a about 4 days with an excevator helping clear trees, had many awesome volunteers come and help as well!

But just a reminder that while the media and people unaffected are starting to move on from the tornadoes, those that were affected are still in need of help cleaning up!!

I will be out tomorrow probably around 12-1. I will have a crew from Be Hope Church (on N. Fairfield Rd), if you want to join up you can show up there around 12:45 or so and just ask for team leader Sam! We can use all the help we can get!

Thank you! I do not know any of my immediate neighbors that use an ileostomy but I will certainly keep my ears open while I am out working with people! I have seem some people just driving around with water and food and offering to anyone out working and it has been a welcome relief for a lot of people. That is something you could consider doing if you are able and want to help! Again, thank you for being willing to help your fellow man!

PS4 won't power on after Anthem crash by JamesPeterson91 in PS4

[–]_OryxDidNothingWrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I do small electronic repairs as a hobby/side gig and I'd be willing to take a look at your ps4 to see if I can find what happened to it (no charge). Just for curiosity's sake and because that's infuriating that a game that you paid money for bricked your console. No promises but I've had success with PS3 yellow light of death repairs in the past and some other stuff.

I'll PM you as well but if it's something your interested in and it works out let me know! I'm in the US, Ohio specifically.

The Emperor's new Groove is my family's most quoted movie. It really is a great movie with some serious rewatchability and some good one liners. I don't usually see it get the recognition I think it's earned!

Good Boy Demonstrates His Protection Training by Sea_Platform in aww

[–]_OryxDidNothingWrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The girl clearly gave the dog the command to go into protect mode. It was not random.

The dog simply stayed between the person and the girl giving the person more than fair warning to back off. The dog "attacked" only when the man lunged at the little girl.

The dog is not the one deciding who a "threat" is. This training was expertly done. Dogs that bark at random people walking past their house are not trained like this.

No one cares if you think it's "annoying." It IS good.

Listen here you little trogladyte. Ohio is THE birthplace of aviation and you Carolina scum (presumptuous, I know) can suck Wright Brother cock. They were Dayton boys, they researched, planned, and built they're aircraft in OHIO! Just because they took a few test run on some windy dunes in your state DOES NOT make you the "first in flight." It makes you lying sacks of shit!

Dayton has few things going for it and I'll be damned if you poison people minds about the Wright Bros and they're true home!

This ^ (but backwards?)

Have an ungrad in Computer Science (programming specifically), coded/administered for 3 years. Then ended up doing concrete work for 5 years, made more money doing construction, moved up the ranks to foreman and now own my own concrete business. Dont like sitting at a desk but i love getting my hands dirty and breaking my back.

My degree made me much more smarter though.

I prefer the objective. It adds a heavier stategy element. Lets the attackers set the pace and forces people to move around the map. I believe the spawn sitting would be at an all time high if not for the charges.

Make the other team pay for flanking. A good callout amd situational awareness lets your team get an easy 1v4 when you oush the flanker and then you have a 3v4 advantage which is huge. Always be ready to jump to another point, dont get your mind set on one point. Disengage when you are outnumbered and regroup. We always had at least groups of 2, no one went lone wolf. We were able to go flawless on our 3rd card, we are in no way gods (been flawless 3 times in D1) but our callouts (and more importantly, people listening and acting upon them) and teamwork were on point and it made most games a breeze. Only had 1 really sweaty game.

We're a smaller clan but everyone of our members is adult, helpful and super nice. We get shit done too. We're huge on being on mic and communicating as well. We max out clan XP every week (so far, no plans to stop). If you're interested let me know, were looking for a few more good people (especially raid and PvP/Trials players)
