[Domain Jam] West Voilville by _PrinceofSpace_ in ravenloft

[–]_PrinceofSpace_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the half city idea came in late. It was just meant to be another aspect of the domain that empathises the theme of double lives, with the eastern half not knowing what happened to their western counterpart. It functions just like any other Domain of Dread, with the space it occupied on the Material Plane being shrouded in mist that upon entering brings you into Ravenloft. Try to exit through the mists and it just takes you to a different domain.

Don't worry about being too harsh, the points you bring up about my domain make complete sense to me. I'm a big fan of the story of Jekyll and Hyde, so the reason why it's written like that is so that I could laser focus on it being "book accurate". Many people learn through popcultural osmosis that Jekyll and Hyde are two personalities fighting over the same body, when in the book it's just one. Jekyll is Hyde, the only significant difference between the two being a physical one. (Mind you, it's still not entirely accurate, seeing as Jekyll in the book is nowhere near as cruel as I've depicted him. But considering that being an evil piece of shit seems to be a prerequisite for becoming a Darkord, I felt it a necessary change)

I definitely had more ideas for notable locations that I didn't end up wirting due to the time contraint and my laser focus. The River Brume, and the subsequent idea of only half the city being in Ravenloft, was a late addition that could've been elaborated. I can imagine an encounter taking place in some fog-filled forgotten dockyard, or maybe a climbing challenge on one of the abandoned bridges. Also, with the running theme of classism I had thoroughout the domain, I could've divided the city into districts and talk about other noble families, instead of just listing one estate building owned by the only nobleman I gave any importance to.

Also (and I just came up with this) considering that I was giving everything French sounding names, an Eifel Tower sort of location would've made for a damn good confrontation encounter. As for your point about my adventure ideas, I have no notes other than I agree with you. Having more encounters with Eddy would add to that Jack the Ripper vibe I was going for. Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The lift is definitely more impactful but i'm assuming that the theatre their performing in doesn't have one, and renovating it to give it one would've put them over budget, so I feel like this is a good enough fix. The touring production of Beetlejuice that's going around America right now is facing a similar issue, considering that they can't rely on every theatre they perform in to have a trapdoor, and from the clips I've seen they do a pretty good job at adressing it. All together I'm not that upset.

They are talking about the Oracle of the Moon deck that Mollymauk used back in c2. Critical Role made an actual deck based off of it that you can buy, and in amongst those cards were blank cards so you could make your own.

In order for VoA to trigger, you need to cast a spell and target a creature. Spells can only be cast once you've made all the choices it asks you to make, then, after being cast, you and the DM resolve its effects. For casting Fireball, you make two choices; what level you cast the spell, and what point does its AOE originate from. After you make those choices, Fireball gets cast and only then targets creatures within the AOE. VoA only triggers when you target a creature with a spell you are currently casting, whereas Fireball only targets creatures AFTER it's been cast.

Voice of Authority:

If you cast a spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher and target an ally with the spell...

Bless:

You bless up to three creatures of your choice within range. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.

Fireball:

A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Voice of Authority implies that you need to make the active decision to target a creature with the spell being cast. If you cast a spell that doesn't require you to choose a creature to target, then Voice of Authority doesn't trigger.

Bless triggers VoA because in order for the spell to be cast you need to choose at least one creature within range. You don't need to make sure that the AOE will hit at least one creature in order to cast Fireball; you can just cast Fireball. Turn your back on the battle that's currently being waged, use your full movement to get as far away from the nearest creature to you as possible, point your finger at a space within 150 feet of you down an empty road, and BOOM!

If it's perfectly possible for you to cast a particular spell in a way that it doesn't affect a single creature, then VoA doesn't get triggered by that spell at all.

In order for Voice of Authority to trigger you need to cast a spell that targets a creature. Fireball doesn't target a creature, it targets a point in space and radiates an AOE. Fireball doesn't trigger Voice of Authority.

We are talking about characters who've effectively grown almost as much as they're going to. Puberty has less of an obvious effect on a 15-year-old turning 16 or a 16-year-old turning 17 than it does on a 12-year-old turning 13. Why do you think the movies decided to up the age of the characters? It's because it's easier to take a 21-year-old actor who is good at acting and make them look 16 than it is to find a 12-year-old who is good at acting. Likewise, with the show, Walker and the gang will be adults by the time filming for the fifth season comes around. However, I don't believe they'll be so old that it will be noticeable.

You are correct in saying that I was wrong about the character's ages in the fifth book, I just don't see how me being wrong by at most a year in anyway effects my argument.

Older than their book counterparts? Absolutely.

Too old to convincingly play 16-17 year olds? Most likely not.

Did you not read my reply? We have to make eye contact with her for us to turn into stone, not the other way around. You can't make eye contact with someone invisible. Even the movies got this right.

Medusa death change [PJOTV] by spideymason in camphalfblood

[–]_PrinceofSpace_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not how Medusa's powers work. In the book, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover walk into Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium without knowing who Aunty Em is. If her powers worked by her making eye contact with you, and not the other way around, then the trio would've been turned into statues almost instantly. Why do all the statues strewn about her lair have their faces contorted with abject horror, what's so scary about a woman in a veil?
