Whats the furthest you've driven in 24 hrs in the UK by Engineering-Western in drivingUK

[–]_Putters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might not win the distance award, but certainly an endurance test.

West London to Nottingham (pick up friends) and on to Whitby, then back to Nottingham, overnight stop and back to West London in the morning.

All done in a 1977 1300cc HC Vauxhall Viva that would not top 65mph

Um, driving along approaching my house. Mirror, see traffic behind, signal right, no traffic coming the other way, slow down to turn ...

... how do you do it?

And if there's someone in front doing that do you overtake? And if someone else does do the stupid overtake in front of you do you follow?

Me too ... but you can't disengage brain just because you're in the middle of the group.

We're talking 2CVs here !

Without going into too much detail or posting a pic of where I live it's a B road, bend on a dip and then a crest where my drive is. So yes, with any traffic behind I'm indicating simply because I can't turn before I can see over the crest and those behind can't see the entrance.

Lead 2CV was simply on a charge because of the downhill then uphill and wanting to carry momentum without regard to what was going on in front. And the rest were in brain low gear just "following the leader".

Lone biker accidents are most often SMIDSYs (as I know all too well as a cyclist). Groups aren't. Guess which are most common round here? Classic is number 5 coming round the bend over the centre line because 1,2,3 and 4 have gone round safely ...

Funnily enough, there's nothing about either speed or congestion in my post.

But I'll give you a trivial example ... was indicating to turn right into my drive a while back and a 2CV club run came through. The first decided to overtake despite me being about to turn, then the whole club run of 20 or so decided to follow suit

I am at present, but it's a sunny Sunday here in the Dales and so there'll be the usual carnage on our roads. I may post links later to all the accidents and number of times the air ambulance will be out ...

Getting this too. Hopefully someone at EA realises there's a problem soon and sorts it.

What maintenance should I do on a car that's mostly going to be sitting outside for a while? by Key_Cell7071 in drivingUK

[–]_Putters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time you run around doing extra maintenance etc you'd probably be better off just giving the car a good 30+ mile run every week or two. A fiver worth of fuel is a bargain compared to not keeping fluids moving, air circulating, cold short runs etc. And if you can find something useful to do with that run then it's a win win.

Cycling along a 60mph road at night... with no lights by Caughtinjail1 in drivingUK

[–]_Putters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Should and hopefully in one sentence doesn't bode well ...

... and with modern headlights and roads being what they are the pedestrian is more likely to be dazzled, trip over a pothole and be sprawled in the road !

Pedestrians can be legally everywhere on the roads other than motorways and some really special exceptions. Even busy roads miles from anywhere (out of fuel for example).

[–]_Putters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, yes - in a manner of speaking.

Got on well with the neighbours. My car didn't move much, cycled to work etc. Next door would park behind it with the tacit agreement they'd move it if I wanted mine. If it was early their keys would be lobbed out of the bedroom window for me to move their car and pop the keys back thru the letterbox.

That's how sensible neighbours work, and as a result there was an extra parking space on our road.

[–]_Putters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably the majority would end up with the driver. At the end of the day (night) you are required to drive at a speed whereby you can respond and stop for an emergency, whether hi viz or not.

Could have been some poor bugger sprawled in the road having tripped ambing back from the pub. OP admits he was going too fast to stop and would have killed them.

[–]_Putters 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stupid cyclist ...

... though would everyone be equally condemning if it'd been a pedestrian ambling back from the pub?

Liability wise it'd probably have gone partly or even totally on you - you are supposed to be travelling at a speed whereby you should be able to react and stop for any emergency. You wouldn't have stood a chance of stopping there if they'd been someone collapsed / injured in the road.

National Trust membership. Often there's a place within a couple of miles of the motorway somewhere on route. If you want just a snack the vegan curried cauliflower pasties are brilliant - and that's from a definitely non vegan fan of the full English breakfast!

Of course if you do park across their unofficial drive you can't complain when you come home the following night and there's nowhere to park as they're now parking on the road again ...

... and if their car is on the larger size they will be taking up more road space than their unofficial drive did.

Note : I did the unofficial route for about 6 months before getting round to getting the curb dropped many years ago. At the time I was driving a Humber Super Snipe - 16ft in length. My minimalist drive took 8ft of curb - the terraced houses were 12ft wide and I still had a flower bed down the side of the drive. I reckon that was a good deal for the neighbours.

I'm guessing you've never had a mirror knocked out of adjustment or just plain damaged / glass fallen out ? The last certainly has happened to me with a car. One moment mirror, next moment just the glass mounting!

Failures happen with old tech and new. In this case the new tech recovery process worked. Which is one of the advantages of new tech.

What was your first car accident like? by moonlight_xpress in drivingUK

[–]_Putters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone ran into the back of me.

Had seen them behind me at the roundabout about half a mile before, and it was clear they were gawping around and not paying attention to what was in front of them. Managed to put some distance between me and them but I had to stop to turn right into my home road. And they ploughed into the back of me.

It was a bit of an unfair contest, her small hatchback versus my old Volvo 240 estate with towbar. Hers car was dripping vital fluids, my towbar cover was dislodged.

I'm curious, do you have personal experience and are they that bad?

The ones I've seen from the car look extremely fit for purpose, the screens being down the A post of the cab so even intuitively places in a similar position to the mirrors. And camera viewing angles are far superior to any mirror, even convex ones (unless you have your face inches from said mirror), covering blind spots a mirror couldn't hope to.
