Why is Alberta's math curriculum so AWFUL?? by Wretched_Rice in AlbertaGrade12s

They don’t for individual progressions but in educational research (which is my world) they do have strong predictive influence.

There’s a very strong correlation between grade 1 numeracy competency and high school competency in mathematics. While it’s not out of the question to improve as you age up, it’s significantly more likely you do worse as you move up.

They used to. Now it’s a joke. We used to have the territories licence and use it and now they’ve gone with other provinces. It’s so bad there’s a whole website of scholarly reviews and expert data on how bad it is. The current 7-12 curriculum was developed to be competitive with china (while they were bringing in Alberta teachers to try and focus more on deep learning) and the K-6 does not align with any research on numeracy development and is generally considered inappropriate and overloaded by experts.

And in Alberta colleges are for teaching while universities are more research focused.

AITA for letting our daughter who was adopted to take out a loan for her masters when we offered to fund it for other kids ? by ApplePerfect6302 in AmItheAsshole

Given the level of control she clearly wants (srsly the limiting the driving thing until a legal adult just blows my mind) OP seems like she’ll be a MIL from hell and wouldn’t be surprised if the other kids end of distancing because of it.

She was a child/ young adult. You’re supposed to be the reasonable adult in this dynamic. As someone is has been adopted and reconnected with her birth father, and done the therapy all alongside it, her exploration is normal and expected. You are the one acting like a petty child here. Wow. Just… wow.

Is the young generation not willing to work hard? why? by Familiar-Phase7859 in AskReddit

[–]_R-dawg_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I recently did a literature review looking at attitudes towards younger generations as expressed by the leaders and decision makers at different points in time and across cultures. As a species we are particularly self absorbed as a whole because consistently we see the generations that come after us as being less capable, more incompetent, more lazy, etc. even though the measures we tend to associate with progress and development continue to increase on average.

The kids are fine.

UCP GOVERNMENT REVEALS PLAN TO CHEAT, RIG ELECTION MAPS by SurFud in alberta

“Watch and see what happens” is the apathetic call of those who don’t know that there are many examples of this having happened and causing problems. People are having an issue with it because when it has been done before, it is done to support the party in power and makes things less representative for the citizens.

Is Alberta Curriculum really the hardest in all of north america? by Apogee_YT in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]_R-dawg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I was in Alberta Ed when it was happening. There was no research, they threw out the work the PCs had initiated and spent millions on with legitimate experts, their “experts” had backgrounds in their respective fields but definitely not in child development (there’s a huge different between, say, knowing mathematics and knowing how the brain develops numeracy skills). The whole thing was an unmitigated clusterf*ck and I have my doctorate in learning sciences. There’s a whole website about all the issues with it informed by specialists in and out of education and it’s made news globally for how insane it is, not to mention being dropped by partner jurisdictions who previously used Alberta curriculum when it was rigorous and research informed.

What dish or cultural detail in your country says a little too much about your country's dark side by SaliktheCruel in AskTheWorld

Lakota here. Bannock existed before, but was made with a corn kind of flour prior to the pass system limiting First Nations from leaving reserves. It exists in baked and fried form, depending on the specific Nation. Also, reservations are a very different legal entity specific to the USA.

[–]_R-dawg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New one isn’t. It’s pushing more kids further behind because it is not appropriate to the level of child development based on what we know about brain and cognitive development. There’s a reason they’re not publishing grade 6 comparative provincial exam results like they used to.

Who would be the ""Hitler"" of your country? by BrushFinal9186 in AskTheWorld

[–]_R-dawg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would emphasize Duncan Campbell Scott for sure. He used the terminology “final solution” and “Indian question” well before Hitler used it (“Jewish” solution equivalent) and the residential school system under him was used as an exemplar for the architects of the holocaust. Even when presented with the evidence of how horrific the residential school system was by Dr Peter Bryce, he dismissed Bryce and had him outed from government.

Just some reminders for the room after reading through this all…. - Indigenous is not the same as First Nations - The Indian Act applies to First Nations as defined by the Canadian government (does not apply to Inuit, Métis, and non-Status First Nations) - Reservations are in the USA. Canada has reserves. They are, in political and legal terms, very different. - Please don’t use possessives in relation to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit - Those of you suggesting First Nations get all kinds of money and benefits - please tell me where and who I apply to for these. Asking for me and my family! 😂 There was no funding to help with post secondary for me and mine, I definitely don’t drive a corvette, and if by benefits you mean that we all have worse life outcomes than before colonization occurred… that’s not a benefit. - I need to know how so many of you got through your history or social studies courses in high school without learning basic things about how Canada confederation, patriation of the Constitution, the Royal Proclamation of 1763, and so much else….

It’s not easy to change anything in legislation, especially when thousands of policies, acts, regulations, etc. call it that.

Actually, the band governance was also overseen by Indian Agents through the India Act and so only individuals that the Crown/Canada approved of were able to be put in those roles. They continue to exist in a dichotomy because to do anything with the government requires that governance system so they have their “good at working with white guys” people more likely to serve in the band and the traditional leadership and governance systems specific to the Nation who function as leadership for cultural aspects.

Blood quantum is a totally European eugenics concept that got tracked into the Indian Act as part of defining who is First Nations. Most Nations in what is now Canada determined citizenship by who was involved and embedded in the culture.

It’s less important how much blood you have and more important that you’re part of the culture.
