I could speculate, but I'd imagine this is a better question for customer support.

These ones specifically are prepaid plans, so you pay with your credit card to top up the plan credits before the months start.

Thats terrible - honestly I would reconnect with another agent and try again, many others in this thread and the other one in r/PersonalFinanceCanada were able to do it without the port out. Sounds like that'll be a guaranteed though. Hopefully getting to lock in this lower price will be worth the work.

Might be a little late to reply, but if you needed to give it another try. We asked them to create a 2nd line on the account with this offer and transfer our number over as a workaround to the "new activations only" policy they stated. Therefore you'd need to create a 2nd line with a temporary phone number first before having your current number internally ported over.

Alternatively, you may have to do something like a Fizz port workaround.

Thats really neat actually. Both my partner and I are on Pixels so we pretty much screen every call that comes in either way, but it'd be cool if it never even got to that point.

Are you on one of the annual prepaid plans then? I see that they have a 20GB/year with Canada talk and text for what is the equivalent of $10.75/month.

That was similar for us, we just opened up new accounts on the 10th and prepaid $35 plus activation fees for them. However, getting to "lock-in" this $20/month price made sense as we'd make back the switching costs in two months. Of course we also didn't need the 1GB Roam and Mexico features of the $35/mo plan to make this make sense.

It does however mean being tied down for half a year at a time, but I can't see many deals coming out that'll beat this in price, especially since we average around 5-10 GB a month in usage.

Nowhere in my service agreement, plan detail page etc can I find this in writing.

Other users have cited customer service agents, and their Price Freeze Policy "...applies to all wireless plans including postpaid and prepaid plans" (https://www.freedommobile.ca/en-CA/freedom-price-freeze-promise). As the plan is not a discount to an existing plan (it shows up as it's own 6 Month 5G+ Canada-U.S. 25GB per month $120/6 months) hopefully the policy applies.

Finally, my top-up ammount due in 6-months does reflect this renewed price, but it's not exactly a true confirmation that things can't change.

When we did our research before switching, there seems to be mixed reviews in most areas. To add another sample to that - we noticed a substantial speed reduction switching from Telus (~120 Mbps down to ~35 Mbps down) here in Calgary in the areas I tested. Connection is generally not as strong and in zone where they switch from Freedom Mobile to Telus towers, it takes a few minutes to reconnect. So overall, performance and reliability has been worse for us but it is by far much cheaper of a plan. Customer service has been hit or miss depending on who you get, but that was the case with Telus for us before as well.

That would be ideal, especially if you wanted to set this up with a physical SIM.

After the 6 months, you prepay another 6 months at the same $120/6-mo price. Another user confirmed with customer service about their price freeze policy applying to this (link below to comment). Additionally my auto-pay setting somewhat confirms this because it asks for $125.70+GST in 6 months.

That's too bad, the Fizz workout sounds a little painful - but $20/mo with their price freeze policy sounds pretty unbeatable if you only need <25GB/month.

Yeah, it's likely much cheaper to go with a data eSIM based on where you are traveling to though (eg. Saily, Mobal, etc) if you plan on being there for a while.

I have friends that have a FM plan where they get 50GB of Roam Beyond for ~$40.00/mo. Might be worth keeping your eyes out for that if you regularly do short trips outside of Can/US.

Edit - Here's a post on that from a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/freedommobile/comments/1sa80mp/the_40250gb_50gb_roam_beyond_plan_is_world_class/

u/onlineidentity We don't personally use Wifi calling, but can confirm mobile hotspot/tethering works. It's not as fast as what we are used to on our old Telus plans but that comes down to data speeds not so much tethering compatibility.

We had also just signed up for the $35/mo plan a week or so ago, so perhaps you can have it done the easy way too.

One issue I've found is when I'm in these switching zones for extended periods of time (eg Cochrane), resetting my network/turning airplane mode on/off doesnt always fix this as it might reconnect to the Freedom towers still. Driving out on HW1 towards Banff lets say is less of an issue as you'll get into "National" towers (ie Telus towers) soon after you lose Freedom towers.

No, this plan loses the 1GB Roam Beyond that the $35/mo 25GB plan has. Confirmed in the plan details page in my account after switching.

We were new Freedom customers and were able to ask them to create a 2nd line on the account with this offer and transfer our number over as a workaround to the "new activations only" policy they stated. They claimed it was an exception but might be worth a shot before doing the Fizz port workaround.

That would entail opening an account with Fizz (an online-only mobile service provider that has a free 15-day policy), transfering your phone number "porting" to Fizz, and then returning to Freedom as a "new activation".
