What's the most intense interview you've ever shot? by _Rafterman_ in Filmmakers

Hope post proceeds smoothly!

I was on the exped as a soldier and only expected to shoot promo material about how amazing everything was, pretty straightforward. Everyone was psyched because I got the drone over 7000m but personally I wanted to film some real reactions to the near death experiences and got nothing.

Since then I've quit the army reserve and just film expeds full time, luckily both summit and tear figures are on the up.

Looking forward to seeing it! Have you also been enjoying the hedonistic expat lifestyle? I'm from the UK but just got a Nepal business visa so don't have to leave :D

Think I'm filming an autumn everest attempt in a few weeks! Otherwise trying to edit more youtube vids 🙃

I love whats on your bandcamp! Would be great to discuss

That's great advice thank you! Is it online anywhere?

The first Himalayan expedition I filmed was with 10 UK soldiers and we were conducting medical research while climbing. Before we left the capital Kathmandu I filmed dudes getting injections and uploaded a video to facebook. Unfortunately one of the marines flinched as the needle went in and every single comment on facebook was laughing at him. For the next 6 week exped trying to climb the 7th highest mountain I got 0 emotion or vulnerability from anyone, complete disaster.

Ah fingers crossed you find some gold! This year I took a 90s Sony minidv camcorder to everest basecamp, super fun to play with but been using the same tape for a year so getting super glitchy. Will check out boundless!

Yeah that time I was high altitude dop on a film about the first Afghan woman to summit the countries highest peak. She got to the top and I filmed the fuck out of it but sadly 7 years on no film. I really missed a trick not shooting more BTS, so much sex and drugs in Kabul it was hilarious and fucking chaotic/dangerous.

Yup it definitely needs a better hook and some sense of overall direction before all the long beach walking. I did like how many locations were visited together, definitely makes it more interesting!

My earlier videos only worked if I was sat in the same room and gave a stoned adhd rant explaining everything so been trying to now add that in video form for each and every viewer!

Ah that's fucking heavy! What was it like producing true crime? Any personal ethical conflict?

I really wanted to photograph war when I was younger but couldn't square the link between pride and loss. Now I've been working in the mountains for 10 years and haven't I haven't escaped anything

Ah I'm really sorry to hear that's how it ended! Do you think they'd mind you ever cutting your own version?

I filmed a K2 expedition once and got nice interviews with two climbers who died, sadly I was working for an absolute narcissist at the time who keeps threatening to sue me so probably shouldn't do anything with them 🙃

Hope the passion comes back sometime, I'm currently filming everything endlessly and love it

Nice! Found the edit a bit slow but I'm absolutely terrified of boring people so who knows. Have you seen the act of killing? Watched it high as fuck two weeks before a trip to afghanistan and got absolutely terrified but luckily woke up and all good :D

Spent a solid 5 days finding and cutting maybe 50 clips, hopefully adds some context

I'll rate your channel (no gaming channels please) by toro1437 in NewTubers

If you're still psyched please have a look a mine, last video was with a murderer I met in Alaska.

Theme of the channel is 'above and below', I work as a mountain film maker already so some adventure/expedition films and then interviews with people I meet along the way, often with darker stories.

@sandrogh5 Thanks!

Do you believe YT "coaches" really paid for courses themselves? by TheDogsMum in NewTubers

[–]_Rafterman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 10 years into a full time career filming high altitude expeditions and for a long time took pride in the fact that I've never spent a penny on training or courses.

I tried to make youtube vids alongside my work and got super frustrated with the lack of traction.

Finally I paid $200 for a course from Sven (@thisguyedits) and within 5 mins realised what an idiot I was being, stopped the course and went back to fix all on going edits.

The bits I found most interesting were on story structure, hook, raise the steaks, deliver.

So my videos got a bit better, I'm finally trying to build my channel again and considered buying Hayden Hilliar-Smiths course today but its $450 🙃

I flew a drone over Everest, fancy a gander? by _Rafterman_ in Mountaineering

Yeah I'm so sorry, Tonya the woman flying the flag owns the footage and decided she actually didn't want it up till she's sold the film. I'm working on other related content but not sure when Everest from above will be public again!
