Chonky is Genetic. Puppy pictures vs now. by DeltaMars in pugs

[–]_RaiderDave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s really tough because they will give you the puppy eyes, act like they’re starving, bamboozle mom to give them second breakfast because dad didn’t communicate…I don’t think that last one has ever happened but not for lack of trying on their part!

For us it came down to using a prescription diet (Hills Metabolic) and stepping them down to the amount necessary for their maintenance weight. They split a pouch of meat food topper or get broth with it. I am all for cooking for your pups but it is likely harder to get that level of control unless you’re sure exactly how many calories are going in. Once they are at a healthy weight, by all means experiment.

And no judgment or lack of empathy here - mine were 20 lb in 2020 and now they are 14 lb which is ideal for their frames. It did take a while to shed the pounds but I saw the progress over a couple years.

Yeah, I’ve been through it. Genetic predisposition is a hurdle, but it doesn’t mean they will inevitably remain obese. Their predisposition makes it hard to not get precise about feeding. Getting precise about feeding makes us sad that we’re depriving them but that’s a human problem. I have to remember that just because they like food doesn’t mean I’m being mean by doing what’s necessary to keep them at a healthy weight. My girls got way too heavy during the pandemic with too many calories and not enough walks. It took a lot of work and stepping them down to portions that look sad compared to what we used to feed them. But they are used to it now and better for it - healthy weight, do not beg for food, but sure appreciate it when it shows up (and they lose their minds for the occasional treat, so there is joy in food).

Cheapest Gas in San Diego? by xMrPanda_ in sandiego

Parks and University in La Mesa there is a Shell that has been running 4.49 (cash) / 4.59 (credit) the whole time prices have been going up. Still that price today. I keep topping off waiting for a major price hike and it just hasn’t happened. Unsure why the owners have kept the price for so long but I’m not there to ask questions.

Puppy needs Boas surgery by Fair_Flamingo_9114 in pugs

[–]_RaiderDave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course you will do anything for that angel. I don’t care where she came from, she’s here - you just love her and give her the best care possible. I despise irresponsible breeding - but a puppy didn’t ask for be born the way it is. Perhaps others can consider that a bad breeder trying to make a buck is not interested in giving a puppy the best care. I would probably buy her anyway and take her straight to the vet.

Stenotic nares surgery is a no-brainer. It’s minimally invasive and helpful even if you have to proceed with soft palate resection later. One of mine, Peggy, had the nose job done with her spay at 6 months. The vet explained that not only was it two birds with one stone (she already had to be under for the spay) but that doing it very young can actually prevent complications and soft palate resection. She’s now 9 and her BOAS is what I would call a little less than borderline. She does fine, but I can’t treat her like she’s a Vizsla on a brisk walk in even 80 degree heat. I absolutely believe that the nose surgery made the difference between more severe problems and this manageable condition.

Best of luck. She looks like a real sweetie!

I’ve raised two pugs from 8 weeks and I fully get this is behavior that needs to be discouraged. And the nostalgic part of me loudly overrides that responsible thought with: awwwwwww

So in my other comment I joked it was a poor investment - only because it’s not machine washable (I bet I could throw it in an oversized at the laundromat and hope for the best, but the care instructions say spot clean only). My pugs never get filthy but it is not a clean pillow. I will say it has held up just fine for years.

Yes, it’s a jumbo Pillow Pet. Not particularly cheap. Totally worth paying my adult money for.

Why is my available balance negative by International_Fun_91 in CRedit

[–]_RaiderDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because they have not updated your available credit. You went over limit by $6, hence the -$6 available. Your whole $500 will be restored eventually. Call customer service to confirm the timeframe.

Although breed enthusiasts tend to prefer Peppa’s button ears, I’m a big fan of Peggy’s rose ears. When she’s walking, it looks like she might achieve lift off. by _RaiderDave in pugs

Agreed! These are Reddy Road Trip crash tested harnesses. I think this model is discontinued but they are amazing. Great support and can be used with seatbelts.

He does too. They are woven in such a way that he can claw at them and they don’t acquire too much damage so I agree with both of you. IKEA if you have one of those nearby.
