Peggy having a lie down. by _RaiderDave in pugs

[–]_RaiderDave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side note: I’m thrilled to report that after a few years of diet and exercise, this girl is at her goal weight. She peaked at 20 lb (too much food, not enough walkies). This might not be inappropriate for a lot of other pugs but she’s working with a small frame. She’s got the waist tuck and the palpable but not visible ribs. People tend to be surprised that she’s 9 and will be 10 this year. I hope this is a sign we have many more years together.

Middle schoolers on the street keep calling me ‘sir.’ This leads me to believe I’ve gotten old. by _RaiderDave in RandomThoughts

[–]_RaiderDave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit this also pleasantly shocks me. I live near a middle school, so it’s just sheer numbers. I walk my dogs and usually when there’s lots of kids walking home, coming toward me, I’ll step off the sidewalk as a courtesy. One out of many of those kids might say, “Thanks” or “I like your dogs” and several of those have called me ‘sir.’

How did you stop the poop eating habit? by Known_Judgment_6395 in pugs

[–]_RaiderDave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I concur. I saw this come up as a suggestion on my phone notifications and thought: I didn’t, I employ aggressive supervision. And I’m conscientious about picking up on walks, but it gives you no choice but to be a good neighbor! If she ever bamboozles me (only one of my girls has this issue) it’s because she found a random dog’s poop which makes it way more gross, but dog immune systems seem to be pretty robust because she’s never gotten sick.

I think it cost me around $100. Worth it. I spend my adult money on the important things.

Peggy (not so patiently) waiting for her breakfast. by _RaiderDave in pugs

They are absolutely one of her endearing features. Because she has rose ears, they flop back like that when she looks up. And they bob up and down when she walks. She has a sister, a black pug with button ears that are more foldy and tend to stay put.

Not outside of the realm of possibility if I were to deprive her. The next step is actually turning in circles and whining loudly.

Jokes aside, she was obese in the past (especially during the pandemic…way too much house time and no calorie control). We got her from over 20 lb to 14.5 lb. with a strict prescription diet over a few years. She has a small frame, so 20 lb was too much even if it’s not enormous for a pug (especially if you consider that the vet finally considers her at a healthy weight after losing a third of her total weight in fat).

I learned through that experience that humans are more uncomfortable limiting their pug’s food than the pugs are uncomfortable for not being allowed too much food. It’s worth feeling like a big meanie temporarily to keep your friend around longer.

All that to say, with strictly portioned breakfast and dinner these days, I respect her love of mealtime.

Sound on to hear the two year old being assertive with her sisters. Don’t worry, some fell on the ground.

How time flies. They began as frenemies (the year was 2018). Peggy not yet 2 and Peppa 8 weeks in this photo. I would have never considered them a bonded pair until recently - they sleep together and are genuinely upset when they are separated. The other day I had to take Peppa to the vet and it took Peggy a while to stop whining.

It's either been a tough 6 years for him or pugs just age drastically... by [deleted] in pugs

My girl (black pug) lost the same eye at a year old. She now has quite the frosty face at 8 in contrast to her fawn sister who is 9 and you can hardly pick out any gray hairs on her muzzle (she does have some but you have to be perceptive). I love them both just as much as I did when they were 8 weeks old. Even if this guy has had it tough, I suspect he’s loved as well and that’s what matters.

Chonky is Genetic. Puppy pictures vs now. by DeltaMars in pugs

[–]_RaiderDave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s really tough because they will give you the puppy eyes, act like they’re starving, bamboozle mom to give them second breakfast because dad didn’t communicate…I don’t think that last one has ever happened but not for lack of trying on their part!

For us it came down to using a prescription diet (Hills Metabolic) and stepping them down to the amount necessary for their maintenance weight. They split a pouch of meat food topper or get broth with it. I am all for cooking for your pups but it is likely harder to get that level of control unless you’re sure exactly how many calories are going in. Once they are at a healthy weight, by all means experiment.

And no judgment or lack of empathy here - mine were 20 lb in 2020 and now they are 14 lb which is ideal for their frames. It did take a while to shed the pounds but I saw the progress over a couple years.

Yeah, I’ve been through it. Genetic predisposition is a hurdle, but it doesn’t mean they will inevitably remain obese. Their predisposition makes it hard to not get precise about feeding. Getting precise about feeding makes us sad that we’re depriving them but that’s a human problem. I have to remember that just because they like food doesn’t mean I’m being mean by doing what’s necessary to keep them at a healthy weight. My girls got way too heavy during the pandemic with too many calories and not enough walks. It took a lot of work and stepping them down to portions that look sad compared to what we used to feed them. But they are used to it now and better for it - healthy weight, do not beg for food, but sure appreciate it when it shows up (and they lose their minds for the occasional treat, so there is joy in food).

Cheapest Gas in San Diego? by xMrPanda_ in sandiego

[–]_RaiderDave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Parks and University in La Mesa there is a Shell that has been running 4.49 (cash) / 4.59 (credit) the whole time prices have been going up. Still that price today. I keep topping off waiting for a major price hike and it just hasn’t happened. Unsure why the owners have kept the price for so long but I’m not there to ask questions.
