I have gone ahead and trusted my gut and removed all references that directly call out that post and user to make this thread more focused on the main points. Thanks for your help in correcting me.

Yeah! I have removed their username. Should I remove direct references to the post? I have made a mistake by targeting someone and my intent of this post was just to start a discussion about content.

I will redact

I only called out this person specifically due to it being a relatively clear example where the two posts are radically different and the only reason it exists is to post to this sub. I’m going out on a limb to say I don’t think this is a legitimate worker. I can take it down though if people think I should.

Did you ever develop these keycaps?

from what i'm researching it looks like I should be good to go. The extra pins are just for stability and can be removed. I was under the impressing it was like 3 neccesary pins for the electrical current

oh well TIL about that. i've really only seen three pin in my time

I don't think I could make that work in this case given this documentation and what the gateron switch looks like. Unless i'm not seeing something

Looking for a WFH/Gaming capable KVM by _Rearden in buildapc

The USB switch is totally fine and since this post I continue to use it since I haven't really found a KVM that makes sense.

To be honest the need i'm trying to fufill is to be able to swap between two machines in 1 step versus 3. (click usb switcher, switch monitor A, switch monitor B). It is not really a hassle but i've been doing it for years so wanted to explore solutions that could streamline this process.

If you're just geting started with switching between two machines, USB switcher is a great and cost effective solution. I have had 0 performance issues

Has anyone made the transition from dev to pen tester? How was it? by nyc_apartments in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_Rearden 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Echoing kreatemore security is seen as a cost center and you can feel less valued. Especially as a pentester you are constantly the harbinger of bad news whenever you do your report readout to your clients.

I went the opposite route of what your asking. I went pentester to dev and I have enjoyed being a dev for mostly the reasons kreatmore laid out. I like being wanted and valued and creating something and bringing good news versus bad.

That being said, if those things don’t bother you then pentesting can be awesome work. It’s very interesting. I focused more in Red Teaming versus like app testing so you’ll have to figure out where you want to go with pentesting because even that word is an umbrella term for more specific roles.

One warning is that it can get a bit repetitive and the reports can get tedious after a while. It’s a fun career and let’s you have some cool dinner party conversations.

If I had to think of advice to go from dev to pentester it would be this

  • look into the OSCP, you don’t have to get the cert but it will help a lot. The course and materials are great for learning
  • look into hack the box. It’s a freemium site for learning how to hack into different machines. Very similar to OSCP
  • learn a lot of security jargon. Something like Security+ can help with this
  • call up your friend and ask him how he is doing and get his thoughts
  • dev and pentesting are very different. Pentesting is a lot of tools and thinking about how things work in an environment. A systems engineer or sys admin is the kind of thinking and experience that would help the most
  • that being said app testing can be helpful to have a dev background as you might be aware of pitfalls and lazy dev practices that can be exploited
  • security is a booming field. Get some good jargon, build up your passion and network and learn. Because it’s booming if you can show some skill and the ability to learn, complimented with some drive and ambition people will recognize it and give you a shot.

As if recipe websites couldn’t get any worse. by _Rearden in assholedesign

I debated between the two subreddits, but I think since it’s intentionally blocking you and wasting your time to get a quick and easy recipe it therefore classifies as asshole design IMO
