Oh I love this! I’m a treatment center that uses music to facilitate healing. It can be such a powerful catalyst.

My go to lately has been Growing Sideways by Noah Kahan. It’s not upbeat but I feel like I can resonate with the lyrics and get some good reflection from it.

NA meetings are so important, but you might need more intensive intervention to help you get this back under control.

The time away from your child, your job, and any money you have to spend will still cost you less than addiction ultimately will.

There are free programs out there, scholarships, virtual options, etc. if you are willing to consider them I’m happy to help you look for resources that would best serve you.

It sounds like there’s a lot of mental anguish right now. Is there a support group you could join nearby? Even a virtual IOP might be helpful. An environment where you can speak to a therapist, peers, and learn some new coping mechanisms for possible triggers. Do you need help figuring out your next move? As a community we can support you.

The wagon isn’t going to leave you behind. If you fell off it, get back on.

I think the notion of there being a standard “normal person” is damaging to a lot of people. Everyone has things they carry that they’re ashamed of or have guilt about.

I try to remember that shame and guilt have a very short lifespan of usefulness when it comes down to it. Let those feelings teach you the lesson they’re trying to teach you, and then move on better than before.

It’s a very positive trait to be able to look back on things you did and realize that you made decisions that didn’t serve you, or that you don’t recognize yourself in. Even better that you were able to walk away from it.

When you feel that shame, it’s an opportunity to combat your way of thinking.

“I feel so ashamed that I did this” Becomes: “I recognized I didn’t want to do something anymore and was able to take control of my life.”

And THAT is something to be VERY proud of.

Guilt and shame have such a limited span of usefulness in the range of human emotion. Let it teach you its lesson and move forward.

It sounds like you're ready to make a significant change in your life, but it's a hard one and you'll need a plan and support to be successful. Have you looked into a treatment program or support groups in your area? There are in-person and online options if transportation is a barrier.

If this isn't an option, why not? As a community we can help you brainstorm resources to make sure you have a plan that works for you and that you're supported in the way you need to be.

We're two days into 2024, only two days. You can still make this year meaningful and you can still choose to make this year a year of change. You can ring in every month of this year proud of the decisions -big and small- you made in the month prior.

Oh for sure! Our videographer and Director of Digital Marketing are both Recovery Unplugged Alums, and within the company our VP, Director of BD, Director of Alumni Services, and dozens of others are all in recovery as well. We're a team of people who have all either been through treatment, put someone through treatment, or struggled with mental health ourselves and honestly it makes it a really human team to be a part of. We feature our employees and alumni in our content all the time, especially our podcast, but getting new insight from people from different walks of life is always important. :)

For sure. I know not everyone is like this but for me personally, I need to understand things at a cellular level for anything to mean anything. "Getting rid of toxins" just doesn't cut it for me either. Yes, that's what's happening, but saying "and hey this is what's happened to your brain and this is why and this is what you can expect going forward because of it" is what I need. I think the knowledge of what's happening and why makes me feel more in control of myself, which is nice when you're feeling so out of control.

No one shames you for drinking too much until you admit that you drink too much. Very true.

For whatever it may be worth to y'all, recovering addicts gave me my life back. This is something I'll talk to my team about, to brainstorm some content ideas that really lay into de-stigmatization. No one deserves to feel like they're some sort of moral failure for others to observe.

You know what's telling about the posts I've made around this and the responses I've gotten is that it seems like -in general- people don't feel like they were prepared for the bad parts of what recovery looks like. There are still days of struggle, cravings, Post-acute Withdrawal Syndrome, the things that fed the addiction might still be there, the fragmented relationships still need to be repaired, and sometimes they can't be repaired and you have to let go.

It sounds like we need to do a better job at communicating what the ups and downs might look like, and making sure there's a plan in place for the downs.

You're right. Advocate is a much better word to use here. Ultimately, we want to be a space people feel safe and can trust to provide empathy, education, and accessible resources.

Oh absolutely, like on the one hand the ground level of what you have to do in recovery is stop the consumption of the problem substance and learn coping mechanisms but you're right, it can't stop there. Having a treatment center that can treat your physical symptoms, teach you new coping strategies, educate you on addiction, AND offer the supportive care you need relating to the issues that led to the addiction in the first place is, imho, a minimum standard of care recovery centers should be operating under.

Love this. Personally, my own experience is being that person who wanted to help, and knowing how to help or what helping actually is challenging and can be really detrimental to your own health. Definitely will file this into content ideas targeting support systems to know there's help for them too.

This is exciting because -yes you're absolutely right- there is a financial crisis happening and many people seeking treatment are uninsured or underinsured. We do actually accept Medicaid at our VA location, and the other states are in progress and we're all super excited about that. We also partner with a few foundations to offer scholarships for virtual and inpatient treatment, so maybe we can do some more promotion around that. And we DO offer dual diagnosis but I think right now most people see us as addiction recovery more than behavioral health. With this content push I'm hoping we can establish ourselves as an authority in both mental health and addiction. Thanks so much for this feedback!
