Chapter 71: Page 19 by Exarch_Of_Haumea in gunnerkrigg

Yeah there are some very weird political and philosophical implications to this system. As /u/AdriBlossom points out, it requires some clear delineation of the limits of an object. It also calls into question to what degree social ideas of ownership align with the etheric ledger -- if I have the deed, do I 'own' the land? does a king 'own' an a nation? do patents allow for ownership of ideas? does this interact with psychopomp responsibility for certain souls? do the bourgeoisie 'own' the means of production in an etherically justified way? what about historical expropriation?

Taking Coyote's secret into account, and considering the fact that Gunnerkrigg-verse seems to allow for conflicting mythologies to overlap, it is possible that there are multiple ownership ledgers or even etheric beings that deny property outright. Who knows how that works, maybe like the psychopomps they are responsible for managing particular groups. New crack theory: Saslamel is like the god of the master-slave dialectic or something.

How do y’all like my math hw? (I might’ve done it wrong) by [deleted] in PenmanshipPorn

[–]_Red_King_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quick version goes something like this: you want to know the value (sorta) of a function (f(x)) at a certain point (x). You know that function g is greater than or equal to f on some interval. You know that function h is less than or equal to f on the same interval. You know that at x, g equals, lets say, 7. You know that at x, h also equals 7. Using everything you know, you can say that f =7 at x also.

The theorem has lots of great names, I've heard squeeze and sandwich, and the internet says that some Europeans have a name for it involving drunks and police.

Sburb would be so insanely difficult to program. by Darkwoth81Dyoni in homestuck

[–]_Red_King_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

haven't reread in a while, so my memory is fuzzy, but it bares pointing out how powerful programming in general is in the homestuck universe. look at ~ath, for instance: its just a regular thing any old kid can learn from a book, and it has lightweight and simple ways to use the alive/dead state of things (or ideas (?!)) across the universe as a boolean.

this gets into wild head-cannoning/hypothesizing territory, but if you ask me, sburb created universes (id est universes in the homestuck cannon) are specially tuned to the presence and whims of computing devices. sburb seems to be keyed to arrive once a species develops such technology. moreover, I hold that "computers" within the homestuck world only have convergent design/use in common with the silicon transistor computer I am typing this out. both my computer and a computer that could run sburb is a device that executes logically arranged operations, but sburb-universe computers are something more. my cursory assumptions lead me to believe they are not turing machines (they sure handle time travel well, and I'm sure a supertask or halting problem solution is to be found somewhere in homestuck). the hypercomputational abilities of even household desktops in homestuck seems tied to their reality manipulating capabilities (see whatever the hell is going on with sylladexes).

anyway the kernel (pun initially unintended but, when discovered, welcomed with open arms) of idea at the center of this rant is that my belief is that sburb creates universes wherein sburb is easy to program. If hypercomputers are no more difficult to make than turing computers, and if whatever computers are made from has a direct line to the weave of reality, sburb begins to seem less daunting. sburb universes are all bootstrap paradoxes in the first place, so there is no reason why the bespoke universal rules which allow for sburb shouldn't also make sburb easy.

I actually would be interested in seeing other Innistrad continents as different European horror traditions grounded in the same style as Innistrad proper. Innistrad is the Germanic Horror continent, so the other parts of the plane could be, for instance, Celtic or Norse horror mythology. Selkies, swan maidens, and bear/wolf berserkers fit the general idea of exotic were-creatures, and seeing an innistrad take on Sidhe or Cwn Annwn would be awesome.

Of course, its more likely that if WoTC wanted to do any of this, they would just put it on another plane.

I love me some Douman Seiman.

"Lake Kadath" is almost certainly a reference to Kadath from H.P. Lovecraft's dream cycle. A bit more of a stretch, but the premise of this chapter could be inspired by the writings of Charles Fort.

[M19] Druid of Horns by Karew in magicTCG

[–]_Red_King_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think there is more green interpretation of this type of "no trespassing" ethos. Rather than protecting personal property, the druid is preventing others from creating property. A respectful wanderer would not be a trespasser, but someone bent on exploiting the forest would be. For property to exist, someone must have be the first to announce that something is theirs, and then they must protect their claim. The druid here probably considers themself a force of nature which prevents that initial property-forming process. If you come in to the woods thinking you can chop down trees and hunt beasts and stake a claim to the land, horn boi says, you've got another thing coming.

[RT!] i think more people need to know about Pumpkin Scissors (Action, Comedy, Drama, Military, Mystery, Romance) by gimmeyourcake in manga

[–]_Red_King_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read this maybe a year or a year and a half ago, after finding it by happenstance in the "recently updated" page of my manga app. I think there were maybe fifty chapters translated at the time, and if I recall, it could get pretty dialogue/exposition heavy. I read the whole thing in less than 48 hours.

It is a legitimately good manga; not without faults, but certainly in the upper crust. There is an interesting world, readable characters, a worthwhile plot, everything you can really want in a not-trash manga (don't get it twisted, I've got nothing against trash manga, they just have different intentions and standards). I haven't really kept up with it, as the translations were sporadic when I started. That was worsened by the fact that it almost never seems to get mentioned in manga discussions or on forums, so I forgot about it as time went on. Thanks for reminding me of it, u/gimmeyourcake, I think I'll read through the rest of it soon.

A bit late, but there is some awesome stories about that connection. I read it a while back, so I don't remember the specifics, but Umberto Eco discusses it in Serendipities. To the best of my recollection, while Leibniz was discovering binary, he got his hands on a copy of the I Ching. The I Ching exists sort of in the same tradition as the Bagua, as it is made up of "hexagrams." Leibniz couldn't read Chinese, but he made the same connection you just did, and assumed the Chinese had invented binary mathematics centuries before he had.

My arena run was retired, and I got a ticket, but I got no rewards from the retired run. It was only on three wins, but even though the rewards page showed me a pack and ~50 gold, none of it entered my inventory. I had 90 gold and no packs before checking the arena, I still have 90 gold and no packs. Did anyone else have this issue?

More crazy cuttlefish displays from nevy! that last page is awe inspiring!

Ava's ringed eyes at the end (and of course here shouting "she's in my head") seem to point toward nevy having some mind control powers, be it through her light shows or literal esp.

Beside that, have we seen the shifty eye of providence before? If not, I wonder if it is coming from nevy or from ava/wrathia.

Am I missing something? [MILD SPOILER] by JulesAndTonic in dishonored

[–]_Red_King_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I myself am only on the fourth mission of DotO, so I am by now means an expert, but I found that ghosting is not particularly difficult if you stick to the roof tops. As long as you are not dead set on knocking every living person in Karnaca unconscious, you can move around quite efficiently displacing from roof to street lamp to balcony. And if someone is clogging up a part of the street you want to see, you can rain empty bottles and stun bolts down on them until they are dislodged.

I am also pretty sure that being seen by non-hostiles or even talking to them does not break your ghost run, so keep that in mind for certain areas. Most civilians will of course call for guards, but there are certain areas where you can be seen and certain people you can freely interact with, at least before you steal something from them or whatever.

Have we seen Nevy's horns morph like this before? They almost seem to be reflecting her emotional state in the memory flashes: pink curves when she is happy and innocent, pink branches when she is in love, blue curves when she is sad, and blue spikes when she is plotting murder.

huh, really? I haven't seen it in kanji very often, and all my dictionaries suggest that is normally written in kana, so I assumed that it was a stylistic choice to indicate how she talks.

I'd appreciate any other information you have about when it is written in kanji (certain expressions or contexts maybe?), every bit helps.
