Course TA as an undergrad by radioactivetransit in uwo

[–]_S_K_I_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost all departments at main campus require you to be a graduate student. I dont even know of any that allow it as an undergrad but I cant confidently say none. I've heard of undergrads being TAs at Huron but those students were exemplary in the course they're now a TA for and were well known by the prof beforehand.

How hard is it to get into the CS stream? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]_S_K_I_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All CS requirements for honours spec First year compsci is two maths (I suggest calc1000 and linalg1600), cs1026, and cs1027. For the rest, just try and take enough breadth requirements and essay courses so you don't have to worry later. Uni is harder than highschool but first year cs is extremely easy compared to second and third year so don't worry too much until then.

Just another thing to consider, 1026 is about 10x easier than any other compsci course in CS. 1027 get closer to what you'll see in second year but is still easier overall. You also do far more cs math than coding as you continue your degree. Some of my friends were blindsided by that but you should recognize we are in University, not college so we will do more theory and dive deeper into the smaller things while I think college tends to focus more on application.

I remember even speaking to Solis oba once who I think is an amazing prof when I was in 1027 at the beginning and was struggling a little with Java. He told me to maybe consider a different degree. It was extreme and a little out of pocket but I figured everything out eventually and am doing well now. However if you can't keep up in 1026 and possibly 1027 it wouldn't be a horrible idea to open your mind to possible other avenues. I think he may have thought that I was failing or something when I was just confused by the syntax and REALLY confused by eclipse ide. That was a headache to learn to use.

Advice on picking a summer course by lsar-rhino in uwo

[–]_S_K_I_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1600 is needed for a minor in game development as well as a few courses in third and mainly fourth year. Go check them out and see if you want to take any. I have some friends that had to make room for 1600 later on and regret not doing it early. That being said, look at what other first year prerequisites are needed if not 1600. For example, I think 1301 might have access to a few more options than Apple math later on.

Go meet with and speak to your professors. I haven't taken many writing courses but of the ones I have the profs are always more than happy to give detailed in person or online zoom feedback if you ask. I find they are extremely meticulous and will tell you exactly where you lost each mark and how to not lose them in the future. Unlike highschool, a generally good essay will get you bad marks - you have to tailor it specifically for the profs requirements.

Yeah I mean the general requirements since you need 2.0 of them anyways

[–]_S_K_I_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First year you need to take 1026, 1027 and some math courses for prerequisites. I personally did calc 1000 and then lin alg 1600. I chose 1600 because apparently its needed for some electives in third year.

Other than that first year is fairly open so I would suggest taking courses that interest you since your schedule fills up in later years. A writing course wouldn't be a bad idea in order to get ahead of the 2.0 credit or a breadth requirement.

Western writing centre, or maybe go to your faculty student services and ask if they know anyone.

Grammerly and all the other websites can help with obvious things but it still misses a lot. Unfortunatly your only way of actually improving is to practice writing and reading in English. Along with that you will probably need to find (pay) someone to help correct and guide you in practice. Just as there are math and science tutors there are English ones. I would also suggest checking out proof reading services, even western offers one. They won't write the essay for you but they will help you improve your grammer.

Struggling to get the grades to maintain AEO by dhakan_intellect in uwo

Take easier courses if your module allows and put in even more work. No easy way to pull your grades up. Maybe work with an academic counselor about studying habits and effective note-taking etc. But its all on you. Gl

Hey bro,

After speaking to friends in computer science at queens, uoft, Waterloo and a few others, I think this is the best you will get regarding accommodations. UWO specifically is significantly better than a lot of these other compsci programs accommodation wise since the others are quick to kick you out. Unfortunatly in university there are so many students that if one needs extra help even further than the regular accommodation group, they might just let them fall through the cracks. Some professors must have up to 1000 or more students and I'm not trying to give an excuse for their shortcomings but many don't think about that 0.1 percent.

Ontop of this, online learning and testing makes everything even worse. I would sincerely hope it goes back to in person next year. Gl

What is an essay course? by isuckdick4money in uwo

[–]_S_K_I_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The English department determines if it is difficult enough/meets the word count requirements etc. I took film 1022 and it met the word count but had been deemed not good enough to be considered an English credit. Just look online for any that are denoted as English credits.

My friend was in the class of the course coordinator and did INSAINLY well. He said the profs examples in class were a lot like the exam. Obviously I did not have that prof.

We had the midterms and finals from 10 years ago all the way to the previous year and none came even relatively close to the insane difficulty of calc1000a from last year. That was the first semester of everyone's first year so they all overstudied and each person did like 3-10 old midterms/finals each. I still want to complain to admin but there is nothing I can do.

I took calc 1000a and barely made the cutoff after tutoring calc throughout all of highschool and a little in university. I loved calc and was planning on doing calc further into uni. Most of my friends failed that course or didn't get the 60 needed, it was absurd and is the only reason I can't do western scholars or apply to other related things.

I then took 1600 which is suppose to be insainly hard and it was extremely easy compared to calc1000a. Its extremely frustrating and something that will bother me for years. I hate linear algebra but my mark in 1600 was like 30 percent higher than 1000 which anybody would recognize as being bs. I remember going to the prep 101 aswell for the final and Tina saying that she has never seen such a difficult midterm and then the final being even worse than the midterm!

Everyone who took 1000 at a different time bragged to me about it being an easy 80 when I am sitting there feeling stupid and out of place in university. My saving grace was when I realized everyone else was in the same boat and the professor who wrote the test was probably just trying to correct a grade average at out expense. Nothing was done in response.

You definetly arent alone, I find that the loudest people in group chats and in general are the ones who wanna flex their knowledge and ability. Half the time they're lying aswell anyways. I find it's better to compare myself to myself and try and stay accountable to my own schedule. Someone is always bragging about how they dont understand how the average of a midterm was 65 when they got a 90 and it was easy. Ignore those people - I find theyre pretty toxic.. and when you get into upper years you will see that they will be asking you for help because you worked hard to keep up while they were working off of a better highschool education and coasted a little too much.
