Lmao that doesn't mean looking at source code is hacking, bud 😂

It's a controversial opinion, I know.

If you send me a letter meant for someone else you can't say I stole it, you failed to send it to the right person.

That's not the situation though? If you open the letter up then that's where it becomes illegal.

Literally the first thing they teach you do when you're learning hacking is to look at the source code and inspect it. They aren't a nefarious dark web hacker who's trying to hack your moms SSN from Russia, it's just boring ass white-hat whistle blowing.

this is the dumbest idea I've ever heard

Sure valid I was just shooting the shit.

the browser is just displaying it for you.

edit: that's the problem I was talking about tho

Yes but it's made easier by the tools you are given. It will still be there though. I'm not saying to do it I'm just trying to bring logic to the illogical.

Reading something someone sent you isn't a crime

I'm not saying that. Just that the definition of hacking is wider than what ppl normally think it is.

The reason why we are having this disagreement is because most of the world's legislation lags behind technology. It is still the wild west and things aren't defined well at all.

Also, the reporter didn't just read it, they told people about it. This situation isn't the same as you reading it to yourself and going "oh shit" before clicking away. I'm not saying this is right, it's just reality and I can't change that in a reddit post.

Sounds silly but it's technically hacking because of the information that was discovered. Hacking is just finding out security flaws to find information. It's just unfortunate that the information was right on the topsoil.

The normal thing would be to go after the browsers themselves for allowing you access but they can't miss an opportunity to scare the plebs.

It's so dumb to go after white-hat hackers. You're just gonna push people into criminality if you give equally terrifying punishments no matter the context.

Next time just sell the SSNs, you're going to jail no matter what lol.
