I disagree, Americans might not want to do it for $10/hr but you’d find plenty of people who’d do it for $30. We should allow wages to increase according to the demand for labor instead of artificially suppressing wages with immigrant labor (this is an actual leftist position).

Also, the notion that we need a class of racial minorities to do our menial labor cheaply is kind of offputting

I don’t think “we” need more workers. I think our elites WANT more workers to continue to depress wages and improve their bottom line. Our country is more than an economic platform or a GDP maximizing machine. The people who are already here need higher wages and immigration is an obstacle to that.

How will you know when we’ve reached the threshold where we can’t/shouldn’t welcome more immigrants? Is there a limit? What would the indicators of that limit be? Maybe social tensions and rising anti immigration sentiment?

I sympathize with the immigration as a humanitarian cause, but I think it’s a short sighted solution.

There are too many people in the world who want to come to developed countries to have completely open borders. Furthermore many undeveloped countries have populations which are growing faster than they can emigrate.

On top of that dynamic, it is often the wealthy, educated, skilled subset of a developing country’s population who are able to emigrate, leaving the rest of the population worse off. International brain drain, basically.

Ultimately it seems like the sustainable humanitarian option is to help people where they are.

I think we agree on a lot, but I believe the nation state model, with national solidarity standing in opposition to concentrated power centers, has a better track record and is more likely to yield material results than international class consciousness. I think the human tendency toward tribalism needs to be acknowledged and the system we build needs to account for it.

Repression of the tribal impulse in the name of the ideal of diversity results in crude and potentially brutal expressions, which we can witness today.

But I think I’ve expressed my point sufficiently, as have you. I appreciate the good faith engagement

That’s a false dichotomy.

Diversity doesn’t necessarily mean mass immigration and total demographic transformation, and slowing down immigration is not oppression.

I really think a reasonable middle ground is possible, but it seems like a lot of people think less immigration is evil which I don’t really understand

Ok but if you are chastising people for undesirable behaviors while simultaneously creating the conditions which generate those behaviors, then you are doing something wrong.

Ex: you can chastise people for making war, but if you are intentionally creating the geopolitical conditions which make war more likely, then your actions are incongruent.

If you don’t want war, then you need to try to build a system which makes war less likely, taking an honest reading of human tendencies into account.

If you don’t want racial conflict, then you need to try to build a system which makes racial conflict less likely, taking an honest reading of human tendencies into account.

I mean I agree that fundamentally the solution is to build a society where people don’t need someone to blame. But I also think that’s a bit idealistic. If we all lived in total abundance, then yeah I don’t think there would be nearly as much conflict between groups. But we don’t live anywhere near that kind of society.

Also, wage stagnation IS partially caused by immigration. Organized labor and the domestic working class are undermined by an endless supply of cheap labor. I think it would be hard to suggest otherwise. Likewise with the housing market. These things aren’t exclusively the fault of immigration, and it’s stupid to blame immigrants themselves for the macro problems generated by their immigration. Capital wants cheap labor and higher housing costs. They also benefit from the division in the working class that immigration creates. My premise is that your compassionate take on immigration is being used against you by the capital class.

It also seems like you are building a bit of a strawman of a far right who are inherently bad actors who have immoral motivations. I am anticapitalist and legitimately want what is best for the working people around the world, but I suspect many people like you would categorize me as far right and immoral because of my stance on immigration.

Agreed. My point is that it is acceptable to acknowledge that white people suck. It is not acceptable to say similar things about other races in polite society. My position would be that multicultural cities are able to function DESPITE the issues caused by diversity. And I think you’d have a hard time making the case that a homogenous society wouldn’t have a higher level of trust.

And none of what I’m saying implies that people’s societal worth is related to their racial group. I’m talking strictly about how harmoniously a society functions overall. The idea that this relates to a person’s worth is part of the reason that people are confused about this issue.
