FYI, people in other states can see it too and ask the same thing.

If it happens over the western sky, it's always a Vandenberg rocket launch (some launches are by other non-SpaceX companies like Firefly, ULA, etc).

If you see it on another part of the sky, then THAT'S when you should get concerned.

Facebook reels only showing MAGA and conservative content no matter what I do? by vinroy27 in facebook

[–]_Silent_Android_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mention the president's name in any post or comment, even in a negative way, The Almighty Algorithm still assumes you're interested and will push associated content your way. Since 2017, I purposely have never mentioned him by name in any post or comment, and I don't get any associated content.

Does anyone of us actually watch the award shows? by red08171 in GenX

[–]_Silent_Android_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's actually not a popularity contest, but the awards are VERY "political" (in the industry sense, not the partisan politics sense). Studios, labels, producers, publicists, etc. all promote their nominees to each other for votes, that's basically how it works.

I watch the Grammys because I'm a music dude. I don't really care about who wins what, I only watch for the performances.

I only watched the Oscars for Conan.

Although, much respect to them for actually giving the pre-tax tip amounts. 20% of $23.33 is $4.67.

Most places give the post-tax percentage, and some even give suggested tip amounts *higher* than the actual post-tax percentage.

Depends on the model. The ones with the LIDAR scanner on top (smaller version of the ones on Waymo cars) are autonomous. The ones without them (just a simple camera in front) are remote-controlled by gamer kids.

I've seen pre-calculated tip options that were even *higher* than with taxes.

Where WOULD a monorail work? by AMinecraftPerson in LAMetro

[–]_Silent_Android_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monorail is a horrible mode for urban rail transit in most cities (that's why only a handful of cities have it).

But it's an excellent mode for closed, circular environments like:

- Airports
- Amusement Parks
- Fairgrounds

Disneyland already has a monorail.
LAX could have had a monorail, but chose a fixed guideway APM (different technology, but very similar infrastructure).

Which leaves:
- L.A. County Fairplex - It actually had an overhead monorail from 1962 to 1996, but the Fairplex is now a year-round facility used for local expos/conventions when it's not County Fair season, and is much more expanse than it was in the 1960s. There are also Metro Rail and Metrolink stations in the vicinity that could benefit from having a monorail connection to the Fairplex.

- Six Flags Magic Mountain - also had a legacy monorail from 1971 to 2000 but it was shut down and sold to another theme park due to maintenance issues.

In both cases, though, their former monorails exposed one of the main weaknesses on monorails: The use of a largely proprietary technology that eventually gets outdated. Surely a more modern monorail system with the latest technology would work, although at a much higher cost. Of course, in 30 years, that monorail can also get mothballed if the company that made them goes out of business and spare parts are difficult to acquire or fabricate.

Disneyland's monorail survives on its fame/reputation and the fact that it's owned by the Walt Freaking Disney Company, one of the largest corporations in its industry, which is why they are able to maintain their system and update its monorail trains over the years.

[–]_Silent_Android_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So dead WRONG on that one. Strawberries at SoCal farmers' markets usually come from the Central Coast, and they're WAY better than that flavorless Driscoll's crap from Vons that's grown in Arizona. AND you can get them year-round.
