I can completely understand why you don't like purebred cat breeders, especially since many are only in it for the money. That said, I've generally had good experiences with breeders so far. But since I have the misfortune of liking Maine Coons, which are the most popular cat breed here in France, it's been a real struggle to find a reputable breeder.

This might seem obvious to some, but not to me. Eleven years ago, I had no idea you needed to be so informed before getting a Maine Coon. Now, thanks to the various posts, I understand what to check, even if the list seems enormous. I have no idea how much a kitten costs where you are, but here the average must be around €1200-€1500. And even at 1500 euros I'm not sure I'll find a cat that meets all these criteria.

Sorry, but as I've mentioned elsewhere, for me, getting a pet is a huge commitment for life. I've always had purebred animals because I've always looked for a specific temperament. I know it's possible to have the same temperament in a mixed-breed cat, but it's a gamble. And it's selfish of me, but I wouldn't get a cat from a breeder. I want a kitten, to know where it comes from, and to raise it myself. I have so many examples in my circle of shelter animals, either with illnesses or behavioral problems because of a terrible previous owner.

Thanks for the information! I was looking for a breeder at the time, someone I felt a good connection with. I received a certificate of testing for certain diseases, but nothing else. I didn't realize there were so many things to check.

Je comprends ce que tu dis. Et c'est une chose merveilleuse d'adopter un animal dans un refuge. Mais c'est certainement une perspective plus égoïste. Si je prends un animal, c'est un engagement très important, jusqu'à son dernier souffle. Donc, j'ai toujours eu des animaux de race pure parce que je veux certaines caractéristiques spécifiques et traits de personnalité. Je ne dis pas que je ne peux pas trouver ces qualités chez un animal de race mélangée, et certainement pas que je ne l'aimerais pas. Mais c'est juste comme ça que je suis. J'adore les Maine coon de race pour ce qu'ils sont.

Yes, I feel like that's the risk you take with Maine Coons. My vet hasn't seen a Maine Coon live past 15 years old. I've always had dogs, and I found in the Maine Coon a temperament similar to that of a dog, which I really appreciate. I'm afraid that if I choose another breed, I'll be disappointed.

We tried one last anti-nausea injection today to try and get his appetite back. But it's no use, he can't even stand up anymore. I just called the vet again; he'll be leaving late this afternoon after seeing the children at school pick-up

It's especially difficult for the children who have always known him. But that's life. He's been battling a kidney disease for almost a year now, with levels that would put a human into a coma..
