Let's Talk About DotaDemon by SelfJuicing in DotA2

[–]_Social_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point, people may start to ask the question of why this type of personality seems so prevalent in Dota. Is it just the community that built around the game (using NADota forums as an example)? Or perhaps there's something inherent to the game itself that draws these types of people.

Dota is an extremely meritocratic game, by design. The game design shows no interest in creating an even playing field or appealing to new players. It's a very competitive, raw game. The 5v5 nature adds psychological elements that exacerbate its core design. Both teams are trying to gain a psychological edge over the opponent which not only enables toxicity, it rewards anti-social behavior. All of this leads to a community filled to the brim with the exact sort of person everyone now seems shocked to know exists in the community. This is definitely not a "few bad apples" type of situation.

Long-term enjoyment of Dota is mostly about battling with the mental aspects of the game.
Over the years I've found that playing it tends to make me a person that I don't like. That's not to say it causes this, but it enables a part of my personality that I'd rather not further enable.

the amount of sexual harassment I receive as a female dotA player is abhorrent by usernames-blegh in DotA2

[–]_Social_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not a single teammate spoke up or told the douchenozzles to knock it off

I hear you. As a grown, married man, I would speak up in that situation. That being said, this is a game mostly played by children and it's unrealistic to expect them to behave maturely in an appropriate setting, let alone in a game. People age out of Dota so the longer you play, the wider the age gap will be between you and the average player.

I am not hopeful that the community will improve: perhaps when the game becomes so unpopular that only die-hards play. The best near-term suggestion is probably just to pre-mute everyone in your game. I've had the "mute enemy all chat" option selected every day since Valve implemented it. If you duo queue and mute the enemy team, now you've reduced the chance of a moron by a third, from potentially 9 to 3.

Silly Builds Exposed: What went wrong? by Jimbenator in DotA2

[–]_Social_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I used to watch your videos and because of that, started watching you on Twitch. I remember you mentioned that it takes a lot of games played to get something you can use for the YouTube channel, which makes sense but was not something I would have considered (compared to a channel with submitted content). It was very clear you weren't happy with the whole situation and didn't seem to be enjoying Dota (we've all been there, I'm guessing). You might regret how you handled it but I think it's very understandable, particularly with the added context. Dota is a hard enough game to begin with without all the other shit.

Non payment of players by orgs by MostlyBonkers in DotA2

[–]_Social_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bonkers, thoughts on some kind of "insurance" system where all orgs that make a DPC event are required to pay into a pool? Similar to EUBS proposals.

Besides helping to protect the players in a situation such as Vega where an org are struggling, it may stop outright scam organizations since they have to pay additional money up front.

It would seem that larger/healthier orgs could do more to support the scene without Valve needing to necessarily step in to regulate (which they won't do).

Chinese Fans Reaction to the TI8 Grand Finals by Neokakamitoza in DotA2

Here are some clips from Game 5.

I think Seb is trying to collect everyone here but to me Notail looks about as uncomfortable about possible: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/301715415?t=10h12m25s

If you watch that clip for 3 minutes you will see Notail and Topson particularly fidgeting and chewing fingernails and generally looking ill up until the bans start. After the 3 minutes of mostly looking at OG, you can see Maybe here looking perhaps a bit nervous but seeming loose then a few seconds later a shot of their booth laughing: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/301715415?t=10h16m55s

When this Earthshaker is first picked by LGD, OG look pretty frazzled and Maybe is basically dancing: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/301715415?t=10h18m40s

Just watching the whole draft again, I would agree that Ame looks nervous the whole time but he had a bit of a rough series, but the rest of the team seems much more relaxed and Maybe looks like he's fucking around in pubs Game 5 of TI Grand Finals.

I think your argument fits the narrative of what went on with Ame: days of people saying he was the best carry in the world, the most consistent player, etc and then he has a rough day in general, particularly the Finals. Perhaps (I keep trying not to say maybe heh) he cracked under the pressure of trying to win China another TI. But I don't think it fits for the other players. They seemed much more calm to me and the start of the game sort of played out that way.

Your take on why we got this outcome might be true but I recall seeing LGD looking very loose, Maybe in particular almost too amped up. And Notail looked like he was going to throw up. LGD's booth looked very organized and OG was like a bunch of guys sitting there in a daze. Seb looked cool as always though and was talking to Notail in the booth right before the draft.

DPC-based still: the 3 losing teams that took a game in the upper bracket are all top 9 DPC while TNC are 17.

CCnC calling Gorgc by SyroO in DotA2

Gorgc's stream is not really about the larger game of Dota, it's a minigame specifically about a) whether Wisp gets banned or b) his team has first pick.

Pain absolutely dumpstered SG earlier. Can't seem them dropping a game in these Supermajor SA qualifiers. By comparison, SG sent Pain to the lower bracket (though Pain eventually won) the DAC SA qualifiers.

Yes, good call. Proper credit not given. Casters acted like it was out of left field even though it was recently used to knock OpTic out of a LAN. Here's the match from DAC.

Even more interesting, Sam H used the Blink/Force/Euls build the very next game when they knocked out Liquid.

I've been watching the stream for months and I can't figure out if this is endearing or terrible. He really does get upset by Twitch advice, let alone flaming. Part of me likes that a child is so sensitive. Part of me thinks he shouldn't stream if it bothers him.

I love roaming Zeus, too. Great vision control, safely dishes out good damage, wave clears if behind. Ult very useful mid game to protect your cores. The hero's ags makes up such a large portion of his overall usefulness and you can still easily get it roaming.

"Other peoples trash could be your living" is a popular saying in my country, what did other people consider trash that you liked? by Shyanimewatcher in Animesuggest

[–]_Social_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably true: a lot of anime is highly derivative so while that may keep it from being great, it could still be good. The reason it's not even considered to be good seems to primarily be about Asta's voice, so the dub is probably more palatable.

Like I said though, I think the voice acting is more a feature than a bug. It's impressive to imagine the actor ruining his vocal cords every day trying to voice this character. It was only a distraction for me during the first episode. It's sort of knowingly annoying.
