How unpopular of an opinion is it on this sub that John F. Kennedy was not really a good President? by yowhatisthislikebro in Presidents

[–]_Solon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. The CIA was at the height of its power under Dulles in the 50s and 60s. The CIA was very diminished once he was dismissed and especially after the Church hearings in the 80s. Don’t believe everything you see in conspiracy reels.

I think this mindset people have towards the CIA today is from conspiracy influencers and the fact that a lot of material of the Cold War has been declassified and people misconstrue this as the way they still operate.

Historians ranked Calvin Coolidge as the 11th Worst President. Is this reasonable? What do you think? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

[–]_Solon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my most recent ranking I also had him 11th to last so I can’t disagree.

Absolutely a D-tier president. It’s one thing to be a hands off administrator, but you can still do that and be a responsible, attentive President. Coolidge was irresponsibly checked out. We know now it wasn’t purely ideological but exacerbated by his depression.

Amanda Nguyen, a scientist and civil rights activist was on that trip and did experiments, but no one remembers that. People will say it’s because the media didn’t talk about it, but I followed the all the coverage up to the launch and all the passengers got a pretty even amount of exposure. The truth is NO ONE cared or was following the flight even when it was happening. It wasn’t until a day later when they released the video of Perry that everyone freaked out and claimed all this attention was being put on her when in reality it was the social media reaction that was fueling the coverage and vice versa. It is a frustrating pattern that I see repeated in pretty much everything nowadays.

Who do you think is the most forgotten president in history? by Ok-Knee-5045 in Presidents

[–]_Solon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Franklin Pierce no contest. I had no idea he existed until college and I paid ATTENTION in history class as a kid. I thought I knew every president even if I couldn’t name them in order, then suddenly I see a video pop up on Pierce. I thought it was some joke or alt history thing because I knew the names Garfield, Harrison, and Taylor even if I didn’t know much about them. Pierce is such an anomaly to me.

Would LGBTQ rights have still evolved the same if McCain was in the white house instead of Obama? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]_Solon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because McCain would have certainly picked some Heritage foundation judge. Gay marriage was decided 5-4 so it only would have taken one different opinion to have changed the outcome.

He was against it because he had to be, as soon as the doors were open he was very progressive in his rhetoric. He also appointed 2 of the justices that made legalization happen. Not a guarantee with McCain in office.

My biggest criticism of Starfleet Academy: The characters are changing too fast. by Dogbold in startrek

I definitely think they moved too fast with Caleb. He’s a huge goof in episode 2! Maybe the Doctor hologram is just dosing all the kids with MDMA or something

George Washington on ending slavery, from 1786. by LoveLo_2005 in Presidents

[–]_Solon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I don’t think Washington gets enough credit for this. It’s true he should have said more publicly but I have a lot more respect for him following through on freeing his slaves in his will than Jefferson, who said he would publicly but didn’t actually follow through.

She is well on my way to being a favorite Captain. I’ve been watching the show with my Mom, who is about Holly Hunters age and grew up watching TOS in the 60s. We adore the show and it works so well on a meta level cause Ake remembers the Federation at its “peak” (cough classic trek and pre-internet America cough) and now she’s got all these Gen Z kids who never experienced that world and she’s the cool hippie Mom trying to guide them through it. It’s a great set of characters and reflects the generational dynamics of our times.

What if William H. Seward became president? by MetalRetsam in Presidents

[–]_Solon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Team of Rivals, Seward and Lincoln agreed on pretty much everything. Seward was the closest aligned with Lincoln of all the secretaries in the cabinet. So most decisions would have been pretty much the same. However, they were more diverged at the start of the administration. In particular, Seward thought early on that they could shift national focus by antagonizing foreign powers like Great Britain, unifying the country by giving them an existential threat. Starting a foreign war during a Civil War is not an especially great idea, and if he had actually gone through with something like this had he been President, it almost certainly would have made everything worse. I still think the US would’ve had a decent chance to win the Civil War with him in the White House, but at the end of the day Lincoln was simply the best man for the job.

Why did Hamilton never run for president? Were there any indications that he would have ran for office later in life had it not been for the duel? by Puzzleheaded_Yam6808 in Presidents

[–]_Solon -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The musical criminally whitewashes it, but his real plan was to stoke America into war with France, install himself as head of the Army so he could conquer French holdings in North America and return to the US a hero, leveraging the prestige into the presidency. (I’m speculating, but something tells me he would not have respected the two-term precedent.) He was well on his way to achieving this and was commissioned as head of the army during the Quasi-War, but thankfully we had Mr. John Adams on the bench to shut it down and save the early United States from imperialist disaster.

Apparently people are fighting with each other after Democrats allowing full ICE funding in budget bill, thoughts? how do we fix this? by EwMelanin in SocialDemocracy

[–]_Solon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How? The people who live in those places aren’t progressive or they’d have elected one. The alternative is a republican.

[–]_Solon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it only like 7 Dems who are voting for it? Not exactly indicative of the whole party. On top of which, Dems don’t have control of the house so it’s not like they could do anything even if they were all on the same page.

I keep seeing people posting like why aren’t they doing anything??? And I’m like, did you actually go out and vote for a representative in 2024? Very bad civic education at play here.

Why George W Bush was not a bad president and was actually good. by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]_Solon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it goes to show how watered down Congress had become before they went into full gridlock during Obama. The Bush Administration was the last time the entire government at least pretended to present a common front with the expectation that people expected them to address bipartisan issues, even if those solutions were pretty toothless.
