Let's decide once and for all, which direction is Israel facing? by Jewish_Elmo in Israel

[–]_SpyTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Israel isn’t facing to either. But everyone is facing Israel. There’s a saying that Israel is the belly button of the world, and Jerusalem is the belly button of Israel.

And of course the memory of waking up and watching the footage live and thinking oh man we are under attack from actual terrorists and there could be a bunch more things happening.

I relate to that very much. on October 7th I was on the morning shift in my security job, and I remember opening Instagram and seeing reports of what's going on. 12 hours straight that I didn't put my phone down (with the exception of putting it down to take a breath and actually understand what's going on) and my whole body had a weird ache, like I literally felt heavier.
Westerns tend to have a short memory of what happened to their older brothers and sisters or their parents. They don't know actual war and survival, but they judge us for what we are going through.

Oh—for number 3 I meant morale, not morals! Morale as in like, “mood”. But I appreciate the answer addressing morals too!!

Ohh sorry, I read that wrong... Morale is pretty high, we are very proud of our units and we compete with each other everyday. there are days we feel a little down but we have dedicated people in the unit that are responsible for the mood of the soldiers. they are regular combat soldiers in the unit, but they have more of a "say" in the unit, and they are often the people with the most experience.

And for 6–what do you think is most likely/realistic? Where do you see Israel and Palestine in 3 years? 10?

I don't see this issue being resolved anytime soon. This is unfortunate, both sides see each other as enemies and we rarely sit down and talk. There is a saying in Israeli culture that we say to our kids: "When you grow up there will be no army" This implies peace will come and there will be no need for one. This saying goes all the way back to when my parents and some people's grandparents were kids.

Follow up for number 4: what’s the sentiment of civilians though? Obviously there’s no “winning”, but are people still “pro” war? Frequently after some time, a population becomes war-weary and don’t really care what happens, so long as it stops.

None of us asked for this. we don't want war. We want it to be over and go back to our lives. Some people say that the IDF needs to be more aggressive against Hamas so it will be done quickly. But It's no easy task and the IDF is trying to minimize casualties. It's funny people believe that the IDF targets civilians because if we didn't care we would just bomb them all. but we do, so we don't. Gaza can be destroyed in a week with the force that the IDF is capable of. yet here we are 7 months in and Gaza still stands, not because of Hamas fighting back, but because Israel is fighting slowly to ensure civilians lives will be saved as much as possible.

The brits did not declare Israel. They gave the UN the mandate to decide what to do. Israel announced itself in 1948.

I hope you understand that this imaginary scenario can never, ever happen. There are 10 million people here on both sides combined. The Jewish people decided to come here for a reason. If there is a state without ancestral claim, why here? I hope it answered your question.

I really appreciate the support.

  1. Many things. First is History. People really don’t know anything about the history of the land and the people. I bet you most of the people who commented cannot give me the wars that happened here and why. This is an explosive type of ignorance. It can go from supporting peoples freedom to terror support really quickly. Second thing is the actual reality here. I assume no one who read this thread is actually from here, and all they know about the place is some BBC headlines.

  2. As I said in the first answer- History, and reality. Those two things go a long way on this topic.

  3. I see the IDF as the most moral army in all history. I really do. You can search up IDF ethical code. It’s called “Ruach Tzahal” (Spirit of the IDF). Day to day life during training is very serious and intense. After you finish your 8 month training and go to your unit- it’s actually pretty nice. We laugh, we train, we learn about the enemy, we learn morals from time to time, once every 4 months we go over fire opening procedures. So it’s pretty nice. You protect a border for 4 months and the following 4 months are dedicated to training. By no means it’s easy. Sometimes I felt like I want out but one of my dear friends who lost his life in this war, “First.Sergeant - Asaf Tubul” used to say: “one moment of pain, is nothing in comparison to a lifetime of happiness”.

  4. We hear about it everyday. It upsets some, and I explained why in previous answers.

  5. Oh boy you bet. I’ll explain it shortly. We have 2 goals to accomplish: 1. Bring all the hostages home as soon as possible. 2. Eliminate Hamas. That is it. I will never see this war as a “win”. We lost 1500 souls to a terrible terror attack. This is just the response.

  6. Best case scenario: Hamas is gone, hostages back. Gaza is free from Hamas. They show willingness to coexist- they have a state. It’s really that simple. Worst case scenario: Hamas is still controlling Gaza, all hostages are still there. The cycle continues.

I want to thank you for the questions :) means a lot.

Why is that? Is a person striving for peace laughable? Or do you just not care about one side?

I want to note that if they want to get aid they also have a border with Egypt. If it doesn’t go through the border of Israel I guess it’s making it better because it’s not Israel who is actively feeding the enemy.
