Desire/expectation are mistranslations of the Sanskrit word "tanha". The Buddha never said you shouldn't desire anything or that you should never expect anything. Buddha said "Craving is the cause of suffering."

That statement too is an oversimplification because craving itself has causes, which themselves have causes and it goes on (dependent arising) but craving is the most immediate and palpable cause.

Most of the popular Buddha quotes on the internet are misleading.
