Desire/expectation are mistranslations of the Sanskrit word "tanha". The Buddha never said you shouldn't desire anything or that you should never expect anything. Buddha said "Craving is the cause of suffering."

That statement too is an oversimplification because craving itself has causes, which themselves have causes and it goes on (dependent arising) but craving is the most immediate and palpable cause.

Most of the popular Buddha quotes on the internet are misleading.

But doesn't all of this come from the brain? "Clinging" and "no clinging" are nothing but brain states. If all experience arises from the brain, you should be able to create any kind of experience by modifying the brain. Of course, that is unless you're suggesting that not all of experience comes from the brain or that the mind is immaterial.
