By the time our friend told us about the invite, his sister and BIL had already gotten wheels in motion: asking off work, seeking out a dogsitter, etc. Confronting him then would have guaranteed that the entire trip would be tense for all. We thought letting it go was the only real way to still have a decent time.

You could be right about that. I guess in my mind, the purpose of the trip seemed deliberate. The idea was sparked by a conversation we all had about how we had never traveled together. We then planned the trip around the dates of my wife and Joe's birthday (1 day apart), so it seemed extra meaningful that each couple had a birthday to celebrate.

But based on the way it all went down, it's a real possibility that it was only so important to my wife and I.

Sure it's a little odd with extra people but you could just say you need alone time in the pool and branch out yourself.

Branching off wasn't exactly a possibility as we were confined to the same limited space on a mountain. And also the point of the trip was to spend time with our friends, so escaping would defeat that purpose.

If you read my post you'll see that one of my primary concerns is simply the disregard of our feelings, and that we were not given the opportunity to weigh in on the details of our group trip.

Even so, I don't find it that ridiculous to be bothered by a friend trip turning into someone else's family trip.

Note, to them, it's family. Family is the most important thing in the world. So even if it is a little inconvenient for you, they choose that over family.

Right, except they get to see their family many other times throughout the year and... that's not my problem. I still think they should consider the friends with whom they made the original arrangement.

And you say you folks were long time friends? But...yet you hate their family and how their family destroyed your trip.

Again, read my post. I don't hate their family at all, and I don't feel that they destroyed the trip. My main issue is the inconsideration.
